Opinion: Fantastic compact camera. A good buy.
- Screen size terrific.
- You can change ISO settings - makes for a better shot in some circumstances.
- Camera is 38 - 212. I was looking to purchase a 28 - 200 and found that with the Canon you can take two shots, merge together to get a panoramic picture no need for the 28 - 200.
- Camera fits well into the hand.
- Lag time is superior to my original Olympus MJU400 - great for taking shots of the grandchildren.
- Macros come out great.
- Colours are more true on computer screen.
Problems: Only defect would be the plastic cover over the DC In, Digital, A/V Out connections - doesn't open wide enough and could eventually break - should have been a metal lid with hinges but no problems as yet.
Opinion: Small size means I'm likely to have it with me when I want totake a picture. SLR like features like shutter and aperture priority plus full manual control are a necessity as far as I'm concerned. Menus are easily learned and understood. Big LCD viewing screen is appreciated. Nice zoom range 35-210mm equivalent. Image quality is pretty good throughout the lens' range.
Problems: Although relative easy to manipulate with one hand, I find that I sometimes make inadvertant contact with the control surface that selects flash options and changing the setting. The cycle time with flash pictures can be a bit slow but I have taken upwards of 125 pictures on one set of batteries without the flash.
Opinion: I've bought A700 as a second A series Canon I had, renewing my photo equipment after few years. Improvement is significant in matter of features, shutter speed, image download speed, weight, etc. For average user number of new features is probably more confusing than useful but for advanced amateur new modes are welcomed. Lot of experimenting and great creative photos can be powered with it.
Problems: Flash reload time is long beacuse of lighter power pack (2xAA).
210mm zoom can be a good reason for pocket tripod investment.
Tripod screw is on one side of the camera (opposite of the weight center e.g. batteries) which in combination with micro tripod means unstable construction.
Buttons on the back of the camera are close and quite small which causes casual mistakes.
