8.0 megapixels | 2.5" screen | 35 – 140 mm (4×)

Keenly priced mid-sized compact in the long-running and successful 'A' series of PowerShot cameras. The A590IS is unusual in this class in that it offers a fairly comprehensive set of photographic controls (including Aperture and Shutter Priority modes) and its slightly bulkier, more traditional styling - complete with grip - shows it is clearly aimed at a more serious type of user wanting to take his or her photography beyond simple 'point and shoot' snapping. Image quality is pretty good too, so though perhaps not the first choice for the casual snapshooter, it is an excellent entry point for anyone on a tight budget wanting to take a more 'hands on' approach to picture taking. Opinion: What an excellent continuation of the A5xx series!
Used to have an A540 a couple of years ago,
this is even better with optical image stabilisation
and the new dark-gray colour of tne body.
The old lens is sufficient for the new 8-megapixel sensor
and only suffers from minor corner blurring at the widest
aperture of 2.6, otherwise tack sharp throughout the zoom range.
Good rechargeables (Panasonic 2600 mah) seem to last forever,
should be at least 500 frames without flash judging by online info.

Problems: Still the low-resolution screen, seems archaic nowadays.

Pity the HIGH ISO AUTO mode is only available in P mode.

Slightly peeved by the VGA movie limitation - only 20 FPS.
This is totally artificial and uncalled for.

Opinion: This camera is great value for money. Make sure you buy good quality rechargable batteries (not included), you'll also need a high capacity DS card (only 32MB card is included, which is a bit of a laugh).
Canon's "easy" button is a nobrainer, but tends to opt for high ISO, which results in some grain. So I go to Program or Manual mode and select the ISO myself, and the result is wonderful: no grain anymore, and well lit.
Face detection is great, because now the people in my pictures are always sharp and well lit. The options and settings seem endless, for those who like to tweak. Video (20fps) is of amazing quality and the avi format is instantly recognized in Sony Vegas Movie Studio for editing.

This camera looses one star for not including a charger nor high capacity SD card.

Problems: For some reason, canon's official registration website won't accept my serial number...
Detailed manual is on cdrom only, so you have to print it yourself.
The casing is slippery so you better use the wrist band. The usb-port cover seems fragile.

Opinion: A good camera for the value, but not as good as its predecessors. Older models had Remote Shooting, a lucrative feature, but now there is no support for this. I'd expected exposure bracketing, but couldn't find it. Very cheapy toyish plastic body. Lens adapter diameter (and mount type) has changed, that means I cannot use any of those accessories from my previous model (I'm pissed off). Spot metering is not a real spot metering, kind of center weighted metering.
