Opinion: Middle size form factor, great canon quality and support, substantial features that many other don't include.

Problems: The additional features are insufficient relative to the A85 and the extra cost is is not worth it relative to the SD200 (or S410). If you really want these features and more with better quality the A85 is for you. If you want just about the same quality for less money and in a TINY package then the SD200 is a better deal. This camera fits somewhere in between these two excellent canons, but it will be hard pressed to sell well giving the low cost of the SD200 and it's tiny size.

Do NOT support MPEG4 vedio.

Opinion: Compared to A85. Spent a bit of time with this model at Best Buy specifically comparing it to A85 and DSC-W5. I had heard in a few places that red-eye was worse than A85. Red-eye is about the same as A85 and very sporatic even in red-eye suppression mode. Sony does a bit better job in strobing the flash to constrict the pupils than Canon in this case. Canon needs to update the A520 firmware for this. Also checked the camera for shutter-lag. The A520 is definately faster to capture an image with auto-focusing than the A85, noticably so.

The reviews on the Internet had made me reluctant to get the A520 but no longer. The size reduction and ability to run on 2 AA-s is definately worth it. It's a great camera the entire family and the old 35mm know-it-all can use. If it did not have the intermittant red-eye it would rate higher in the all 5-fives. With the DSC-W5 lacking aperature and shutter priority modes (and standard memory) the A520 is a slightly stronger pick.
