Opinion: Good enough for all beginners. Simple and have a clear result. But, sometimes there are some noises if we look into detailed result.
Anyway, Canon Powershot A420 is a good first step to do our new hobby.

Opinion: Canon image quality
amazing continuous shoot (i tried over 40+ shoots at 4MP without stop)
quick start up (1sec)
excellent battery life (with NiMH AAx2)
VGA video clip is good quality
plastic body but not bad
very good for the value ($120), won't break your heart if get scratched

Problems: CONS
little bit slow in flash recycle
LCD is 77000 pixels only
QVGA video clip quality is still lousy (common to Canon)
no sound in video clips (go for A430 if you want to have it)
