Opinion: I've had one since Nov '02 and it has never failed me even once... The results at ISO 50 still continue to amaze me :)
Now use this as a backup camera or for lending over to friends in need, and it continues to perform the way it did from day 1...
Problems: None what so ever :)
Opinion: Use it a backup and carry around. Have it for 4 years and still amazed by the quality of the pictures.
Opinion: This was my first digicam. Too big for what I wanted to use it for (pubs and nightclubs), but I couldn't afford the then-current Ixus v2! Apart from size, it did a lovely job, turning out consistently good images in appalling conditions when I really had very little idea what I was doing. It's still in use, for tripod shots taken by my doll-collector wife.
Problems: The function dial sticks badly.
Damp got into it and it stopped working. However, a year or so later it started working again. But yes, not suitable for taking out into hazardous environments!
Opinion: This was my first digicam. Have not used it for more than two years due progressive upgrades. I took it out last week to check some rechargable AA batteries and took some pictures with it. How amazed I was after opening the pic's on my computer, the quality of the photos are amazing, a bid noisy at low light but I liked the colors. The clean natural looking pictures this 2-megapixel camera can produce is outstanding.
Opinion: I have been using A40 for more than 3 years, took 12000 pictures. I have no problems. However I recently upgraded to A620. I will continue to use A40 as a second camera since it has no significant selling value left.
Problems: No problems.
Opinion: I have owned this camera for 1 and 1/ 2 years, been a reliable companion. I dropped in trout stream right after purchase, let it dry and it still is working. My wife uses it for real estate photos 2 to 3 times a week. It is very handy for impromptu moments, I just don't get to take it with me anymore, my wife's needs supersedes my fishing fotos....
Problems: For the amt. I paid, it would be hard to complain, I am sure that the A-60, 70, and A-80 are just as capable.
Opinion: This is my "go-anywhere" camera. It's always with me. It was the camera I had with me and used to photograph the after effects of an accident - made getting a claim paid child's play! It is cheap enough that I don't worry about damaging it or getting stolen. My other camera is a Canon Digital Rebel and that is used for holidays or when I need excellent quality pictures. The Canon A40 on the other hand has been abused by being taken on the beach, and rock climbing in all types of weather and has always performed flawlessly. It is either this or not having a camera at all!
Opinion: This is the second digital camera that I have pruchased. As a theatre producer, I am in love with this camera. I take about 500 digital pictures durring the production process compared to the 5 rolls of film that I used to use. This camera has paid for itself over and over again. The images are excellent and if you have a couple that are not, it is very simple to select and delete images. See some samples of this camera's capabilities at www.davidmatthewbarnes.com. Almost every picture on that site was taken with the Canon PowerShot A40.
Opinion: This is a great camera, my friend has a similarly priced fuji coolpix
and this camera makes it look like a toy.
It feels sturdy even though it's not totally metal, it weighs just the
right amount, not so heavy that it's a burden but not so light that
you can't trust it.
The point and shoot photos I took we're unbelievable, in the
daytime theres little point in using manual mode.
I use manual mode for indoor and night time pics or when I want to
create an effect and I have no complaints.
Yesterday my sister dropped the camera from 5 ft onto limestone.
The CF door came off but is still intact and the camera doesn't turn
on anymore.
I would not expect more from it, digital devices just cant be
expected to survive that kind of knock. Nothing smashed or grazed
which was quite remarkable. I will be replacing my camera with a
powershot A70.
