Opinion: I've got my A200 from Jul 2002. About half year later, the battery compartment cover is broken. Other owners have already mentioned that the battery cover is the weakest part of this camera.
Therefore, I sent the camera to Canon Service Centre for repair. Canon quoted the price is US45. I stress that it is a quite obvious design defect. Canon ask me to leave the camera in their centre and their technician shall contact me shortly.
Two weeks later, the camera was repaired at no cost. I think Canon also agree that this is a design defect so they agree to make the repair at no cost.
I write here because I want to remind everybody. If your camera has the same problem, don't wait any more. Take your camera to Canon Service Centre to have a free repair before the warranty period is expired.
Problems: The hinge of the battery cover is very weak.
Opinion: I payed €200,- for the cam here in the Netherlands and I can say it's worth it!
Good features and image quality, especially the macro mode.
Once you know all the features also good ease of use.
Problems: Not real problems just one thing Canon could have done different:
The on/off switch on the front: why not the usual kind of switch on the back?
Opinion: I've owned a Sony and Nikon previously, and they are both heavier equipted and more expensive then this A200. But I gotta tell you this, Canon is GREAT!.
The image quality is just superb! Sharp images, clear resolution, GREAT color. I have no problem shooting in any sortof setting be it daylight inhouse, incandasecnt light etc. A Shame Nikon has very obvious problems with noise levels in so many of their models, whereas Sony produces slighly lower quality images and their prices/ design are such a snob compared to Canon. And whats worst? It cost me so much less for this camera!
See a Canon? Buy it. You won't regret it.
Problems: Now lets see...
1) Read the manuals first before you try anything smart.
2) Get a NiMH 1800-2000mAh. It works wonders.
3) Get a 128mb flash card. 8mb cant even fit my face stitched.
4) Could've designed a jog-dial to select menus etc instead of going through so many buttons (Oops clicked wrong one...Oh! sorry fat fingers...I swear the ISO setting is under this tab...where is it...)
Opinion: ok, just got one for 150$ usd for an upcoming trip (would have been tempted to wait for A300, but didn't have time). Positives: for a plastic camera, it's solid. Controls are easy to figure out, taking pictures in automatic usually goest well. Downside: very long lag writing to the flash between photos, and a very long flash charge cycle (these two things can cause a 5-8 second lag between photos). I've used an S230, with this same flash card, so I know it's not the cf card. Battery/cf door is solid, I think, but definitely a bit tricky to get opened up.
Problems: Slow flash recharge, slow write of photos to cf card, and some difficulty focusing in low light conditions.
Opinion: i both it this weekend and everything is great just the battery life is not long
Problems: no probs just the battery's
Opinion: I bought this camera a moth ago (this is my first digitalcamera) and i am really pleased with the pictures.
In the manual mode you can change almost everything besides the shutterspeed. You can change the flash (auto, off, slow sync, red eye), macro or infinity mode, Exposure, White balance, photoeffect, ISO, continues shooting and self-timer. First the manual mode can be a bit difficult to learn, then you have the auto mode (very simple to use).
The pictures at maximum quality is very good. I have not tried to print a picture out so i don´t know wich size is reasonable to use. If you are shooting at dark areas the autofocusingsystem has a little problem to see where i sould focus. Raise the ISO then so your pictures wont be so dark.
Use the LCD when you are taking pictures. The optical viewfinder only sees around 80% of the actual picture. The LCD is quite fast. I have seen on old cameras a sort of "lag" when shooting pictures with it on.
There are many who are complaining on the batterylife. I just say one thing: Buy a set of 1800mAh rechargeable batteries with an "intelligent" charger. I have nothing to complain with the batterylife now. Only that the DC input is at 3.15V unlike the usual 3V.
This camera is very good overall.
Things I think you should buy to the camera:
Compact Flach 64Mb
1800mAh reschargeable batteries with an "intelligent" charger
A bag that fits the camera

Problems: I have only one problem:
when you have the flash off the pictures become blure, like the shuttertime is too long.
Opinion: I have this camera for few days, and i already live it.
Pictures are great and i'm saving alot of money for i don't have to buy films and develop the photos.
Problems: Eat bats like a hungry beast!
Opinion: I have been using the A200 for about six months now, and although I found the unit a little hard to get used to as far as retrieving photos and deleting, so forth, I find the image quality, especially for a web environment, to be excellent. One of the best features of all is that it easily fits into a jacket or slacks pocket, and is durable enough to take it.
Problems: Unit is extremely moody about the quality of batteries used. Many brands could not even produce a single photo, regardless of type. 2 AA Duracells will go a long way though!
Opinion: When I saw the camera in-store I thought there'd be no way I'd buy it. I was dead-set on Olympus cameras, but then I received the A200 for Christmas and have slowly grown fond of it. I've discovered that if you, like me, can't afford to buy rechargable batteries at the moment, Energizer e2 batteries work rather well. The image quality is great, although sometimes shots come out with unexplainable dots on them. That's a simple nuisance, however, that can usually just be edited out in photshop or whatever program you choose. Overall it's a really great camera for its price.
