Pentax smc FA 77mm 1.8 Limited

Telephoto prime lens | Pentax KAF | 27980

I don't intend to start trying to say anything much in this review of a technical nature as the main review is fair on this aspect of the lens. This is more about how it is to use. First things first, for a telephoto lens this is quite small and light. Build quality is superb. All metal construction and nice touches like the built in lens hood and the baize-lined metal lens cap set its stall out as a product that is going to last. I've been debating on getting this unusual focal length at ~ US$800 for a very long time.  In a cropped sensor, it is more liked 115mm focal length on a FF.  And I have a 70-200mm F2.8.  Should I keep it? After taken it out for a few days, it is a keeper.  It has good contrast at F1.8 with creamy oof, become sharper starting at around F2.0 with bubbles oof and sensationally sharp by F4. i wish it was a 85mm, better AF and closer focusing distance.

I a photographer for my Childs marching band.  When I take portraits with this lens, all the rest of the parents take notice.. I shot a series for "pink day" (the band wore pink for Breast Cancer Awarness) and the photo committee lead cited them as stunning. The bokeh and sharpness are wonderful. The build is great. the only issue is PF in high contrast at f1.8 but it is slight.

This lens is one of Pentax's three FA Limited offerings - the others being the FA 31m and FA 43. It is a lens that really needs to be used to be appreciated. Build like a well-engineered watch, it delivers the much-maligned "3-D effect" even to folks who don't believe in the "3-D effect". :) This lens will make you a believer. Sharpness, contrast, bokeh... pixie dust. It's probably my favorite overall telephoto in two mounts. Problems: Some CA wide-open. Not a super-fast focuser. ...
