This is the normal zoom to buy. After being burned by another l ens that failed out of warranty twice, I rented this lens to try before buying. I liked it so I bought it brand new. I would prefer it to be a screw drive focus, but Pentax seems to have figured out SDM and this lens does not have the huge number of reported failures as some of their other lenses ... This must be the most versatile DA lens from Pentax. You can use it almost in every context, .. landscape, portrait, arcitecture, .. even macro (closest focus 28cm, magnification rating 0,31x). Very sharp from f5.6, and razor sharp from f8 through f11, that's whatever focal lenght. Best tested result with f10/33cm. SDM technology makes focusin process fast and silent. This is the first Pentax SDM lens I have ever owned I have to check all the time to make sure it's working as you can barely hear it. Great results so far Problems: Noticeable curved horizons when I take photos at 17mm Also a bit soft at F4, but once you get to F5.6 and smaller, you can't really tell
