Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS

Nice camera. JPEGs are high quality. User interface is simple and well-designed. Using it underwater is very simple, just need to verify that both hatches are double-locked before submersion. The macro mode produces truly spectacular images. It compares favorably with any SLR macro lens. Buy an extra battery. On-board flash is a bit puny for fill. It is tempting to leave my OM-D and lenses at home and travel with just this camera.

I own 2 DSLRs and earlier this year I got the OM-D. I never own a compact so the TG-1 is my first. The reason I was looking for a compact was because it was troublesome for me to take out my DSLR or even the OM-D when hiking especially if the weather is wet. Since I am getting a compact for that purpose, might as well it be a rugged one. During my recent travels the TG-1 met what I expected it to do. Good thing about that camera in comparison with Canon D20, for instance, is that TG-1 has a f as low as 2.0 while D20 has a f3.5 (if I am not mistaken) which is quick dark when you think about underwater. The setback is that you are not able to set it manually; instead the camera sets it automatically. I went underwater with TG1 (in a swimming pool, therefore just 5 feet deep). I took this camera abroad and it performed very well in all weather conditions. Although I will probably never take it underwater, it's good to know that this camera is safe in the rain. One thing I've never done is expose any of my cameras to rain and I've never taken any rain shots but I took some abroad with this camera and I was pleased with the results. Purchased one three months ago as replacement for Pentax w60. Much better. Fast lens and less noise. Good movies and screen. Pictures look great on retina IPad but... Only if not enlarged. Both sharpening and denoising are very strong and enlarged photos look poor. As for durability - it is much mor plastic than it looks and soon started to condensate fog in cold water. But I like it as, well, pictures look great and it still works.
