I am looking to buy a new camera primarily for my wife and also for my occasional use My hands shake a lot and image stabilization is a big criteria for me. Also I would love to have manual zoom options which I can play around with. outdoors and zoom would be a plus but I am not sure if I can carry around huge lens for that purpose. I have a canon s3 IS and have rarely used it despite the fact that it takes good pictures and videos. My wife (primary user of the camera) could be taking lots of...

I had a K110D years ago and it worked okay with manual A, M and K type lenses. I think I had to set some custom function to allow use of the aperture ring on the lens. Does the K500 still allow this function? Does the focus peak feature work with manual lenses? I'm not sure what is happening to the K-50/500 with the K-S1 out now, but I see the K-500 is $399. Might be a good time to get back into an SLR again. BTW, I now have a Nikon J1. I like the compact size but it struggles with noise at...

Hey guys.  So I am recommending a Nikon J1 to my parent in laws, as they want something with good quality but also with solid reach, that will work as an all-in-one camera for an upcoming trip.  They also want it for grandkid pics and shots of birds, deer, etc on their property. As such, my 3 top choices were: Nikon J1.  (28-300ish mm with 10-30/30-110 or close with 10-100) A travel zoom (28-700mm) -- great range but sucky indoors/lowlight. A Lumix LF1  (26-200mm) -- more pocketable, decent...

J1 with 10-30mm and 30-110mm I'm considering purchase of the 18.5 f1.8 prime. My understanding is that it doesn't come with a lens hood. Would the lens hood from the 30-110 fit, using bayonet lugs? Would it be too big to reverse on the lens when retracted? Would it vignette? If it does fit, but vignette, I'm thinking of getting an inexpensive 30-110mm lens hood (used or clone) and using something like a dremel tool to form a petal. Maybe shaved depth to fit reversed? Flawed idea? BTW: I'm a...

The more I use my new-but-sold-as-refurb J1 with two lens bundle, the more impressed I am with it. Am I the only one who feels that way? However, as a person whose main camera is a Canon DSLR f.f., I find the J1 to be quirky, with a learning curve. The UI can be frustrating, especially all the "menu diving" and lack of "hard buttons", and odd choices for the few "hard buttons". Sorry for the whining. YMMV. Still, the potential seems to be there. I anticipate being able to get a prime lens or...

Hi all.  Using the J1 in interval shooting mode, is it possible to turn off the lcd display to preserve battery life?  Using manual focus and with dimmed display, I can only get about 300 shots before battery dies.  Any suggestions (not interested in AC option if there is one due to remote areas)?  Thank you.  Three firmware versions displayed: 1.00, 1.10, 1.11.  I assume that the latest update is 1.11.

SPP 6.0.5 pre-newbie and "5 day trial of DP2-Q", so "consider the source ". Here's more on RawDigger . I'm trying to figure out how much EC (exposure compensation) can be dialed into the DP2-Q at ISO 100 on tripod, with reasonable risk of blown highlights, to do ETTR . My speculation is that the histogram is based of JPEG pipeline processing, so it would be rather conservative. Or not? My observation is that Adobe's Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) does so much processing "behind my back" even with...
