It is very common people to trash this lens in the net. I really think it is not fair. I am not an expert and this was my first tele lens I bought in the first half of 2002. I do not have experience with any "similar" lens. Both fact can bias my opinion, of course. (1) This is not a poor lens optically, despite lots of complains. I have used this lens for over five years on both DX and FX bodies (presently a D90 & D700). At first I was really dissatisfied by the image sharpness, and started to sell the lens. My first "breakthrough" with the lens came after I read a review that reminded me that just because it has VR, you cannot forget the general rules for handling a telephoto lens. My favorite photography is wildlife and birds. I had only gotten into digital photography as a hobby a few years ago and realized right away I needed some lens that would get me at least some reach what I was getting from an 80-200. I got a really good deal on my 80-400 used on E-bay. At first I was shooting a D80. I got some good shots, but after switching to a D300 I got a higher percentage of clearer shots.
