HP to outsource camera business, concentrate on Print 2.0
In a move which will be of no surprise to many Hewlett Packard has outlined plans for the future of its digital camera business, announcing that it is to licence an OEM partner to design, source and distribute HP-branded cameras. This shift in strategy is intended to allow the technology giant to concentrate on developing its Print 2.0 initiatives, strengthening its position in the home and commercial printing markets. The current range of cameras is expected to remain on sale for the remainder of this year with the new partnership deal to follow in the early part of 2008.

HP takes wraps off summer releases
Summer is on its way and HP has a raft of releases to help capture the fun and games. The headline product is the Photosmart R937 which boasts a huge 3.6-inch touchscreen - the largest currently available - in addition to its 8MP sensor and 3X zoom lens. The remainder of the cameras released are hardly ground-breaking stuff but HP do seem to have all the bases covered price-wise with new cameras starting from $79.99. Also released are two new printers, one with wireless connectivity, and an 'all-in-one' printer, scanner and copier with CD/DVD printing capability.

HP Photosmart R837
PMA 2007: Today's HP day, with three new additions to the easy to use Photosmart digital camera range. First up is the Photosmart R837, which represents something of a design departure for HP, featuring an internal zoom and sliding front panel. Other spec of note include a 3.0-inch LCD screen, 3x zoom and 7.2MP CCD. More importantly it is packed with HP technology goodness, including (an industry first) pet-eye fix and, naturally, a special 'slimming mode'. Nice.

HP Photosmart M537
PMA 2007: Next up is the entry-level Photosmart M537 Digital Camera, a 6 megapixel, 3x zoom model with HP Steady Photo Anti Shake (ISO boost anyone? There's certainly no moving parts involved). Another wrist slap goes out to HP for putting '18x zoom' in the headline spec... we don't count the digital bit guys! Thought that died out years ago...

HP Photosmart M437
PMA 2007: Last but not least is the entry-level M437 digital camera. With a 5MP CCD, 2-inch screen and 3x optical zoom (or '15x total zoom; as HP puts it) the M437 is an inexpensive (€119) introduction point to HP's clever in-camera effects and proven ease of use. Oh and it goes up to ISO 800 - which in HP marketing terms means it's got 'anti shake'. Tut tut.

HP R707 extinguished by firmware
We've seen this story reported in many forms on many sites but only truly accurately on Imaging-Resource. The reality is that HP are not recalling the R707 but have instead issued firmware which can prevent a fire hazard. If the camera was used with a non-rechargeable battery (such as a Lithium Duracell CP-1) and then connected to the AC adapter or docking station there was a potential for the battery to overheat and even catch fire. This new firmware resolves this issue.

HP quits selling digital cameras in Asia

HP has announced plans to stop selling digital cameras in the Asian market. An HP spokesman told dpreview, the company wants to "increase focus on opportunities that offer the highest possible return and where the company can deliver greatest customer value." It will instead turn its attention to home printing in the region, reports ZDNet. The move is thought to be as a result of stiff competition from other manufacturers and follows the news that HP could make up to 25,000 of its workforce redundant. Digital camera sales for the region were not encouraging and research analysts IDC, showed that the company was selling so few cameras last year that it fell into the 'other' category. Outside of Asia however the company performed better, ranking no.5 in the United States and no.7 in Europe and Latin America.

The restructure is likely to be announced at the end of the fiscal third quarter on July 29. The layoffs could bring around $100 million in headcount-related savings in the period.
