dpreview.com gets mobile

We've just added a mobile version of dpreview, to make it easier to get to our content from your cellular, mobile or generally portable devices. In this first iteration we've made it easy browse reviews, news stories, articles and previews. Forums and commenting support will come in later versions. However, although we think m.dpreview will make it easier to enjoy the site, we've placed small links at the bottom of every page to swap between the mobile and desktop versions.

Goodbye to Gravatar - dpreview will be hosting your user image

We're going to be hosting user avatars from now on - removing the need for you to use the Gravatar service. It means you can easily manage your avatar from within dpreview and that changes are reflected much faster. If you already had an avatar hosted on Gravatar, it will have been imported already so you don't need to do anything. However, if you wish to add or update an avatar, or you've changed yours in the past few days, we're prepared some instructions for how the process now works.

dpreview.com launches Challenge of Challenges 2011

To showcase the talent and imagination shown by our Challenge hosts and entrants, we're once again running a 'Challenge of Challenges,' to find the dpreview.com Picture of the Year. This year we've made a couple of changes to the way we run this annual event. We've whittled more than 1700 challenge winners down to a more manageable 100 - selected by the dpreview editorial team. And for the first time, we're offering not only a prize for the winning entry, but also for the 'best' voter. Check out the details after the link, or jump directly to the challenge and get voting!

Complete our survey for the chance to win an iPad 2

US photographic trade body PMA and dpreview.com are conducting a survey looking for the views of dedicated amateur photographers. The ten minute survey asks about your photographic use, the features you'd like to see in cameras and your use and experience of photo sharing sites and printing services (as well as helping us make dpreview a better place). It aims to get a clearer understanding of what committed non-professional photographers want from their cameras and related services and may even result in those things getting a bit better. Responses will be discussed at the forthcoming 6Sight conference. As a reward one lucky respondent will be sent a shiny new Apple iPad 2. Update: the survey has now closed. We will announce the winner of the iPad soon.

Planned site maintenance on dpreview.com

Planned site maintenance will mean the site will be temporarily unavailable for a period today (Saturday November 19th). For around an hour from 20:00 GMT / 15:00 ET / 12:00 PT, it will not be possible to log into the site. This will mean commenting, forums and challenges will be read-only during this period. A banner across the top of the page will make clear when this work is in progress and we hope to bring an improved user experience as a result of the work. We appreciate your patience.

Update 15:44 PT: We've completed the necessary maintenance, and site functionality has been restored. However, due to the inherent latency in DNS (Domain Name System) propagation, a very small percentage of users may be unable to post to our forums for the next 24-48 hours. If these issues persist, or if you continue to experience performance or functionality problems with other areas of the site, please feel free to send feedback via the link at the bottom of this page.

Sony announcements: content updated
Sony content updated. In the light of the level of interest in Sony's latest launches, we've gone back and added more information to much of our content. Now our servers have cooled down a bit, we've gone back and, in response to the questions you've been asking, we've updated our coverage. Most noticeably, we've added some 1080p60 movie samples to the A77 preview. We've also added improved illustrations to our NEX-7 first look to make it easier to see how the control system is going to work.

Just updated: For Sale and Wanted forum features improved
Just updated: Features added to 'For Sale and Wanted' forum. It's been three weeks since we introduced the long-requested For Sale forum and, at launch, we said we'd add features to improve the experience, if it was popular. Well it's been a big success, so we've developed a range of special features specifically to make the forum more useful and easier to use. Not only have we added the ability to withdraw or close threads (and an option for hiding closed threads), we've also created a feedback system that allows buyers and sellers to rate one another.

In with the new: dpreview forums expanded
We've just made the biggest changes to our forums since the site was established, 11 years ago. This includes expanding the scope of dpreview forums to include areas dedicated to discussion of photographic techniques and digital video. We've also introduced totally new Off-Topic and For Sale/ Wanted forums. You'll notice a couple of minor name changes and a shuffling of the order of a few of the existing forums too. Check out the details after the link...

dpreview expands to include printer content
Just added: dpreview printer coverage. Over the past few months we've been expanding our database to include the most popular photo printers. This addition allows you not only to search for printer specifications and information but also to make side-by-side comparisons and contribute your own user reviews. In the coming weeks we'll be adding further printer-related content, including reviews and articles, along with user reviews from Amazon users. The move also sees a rearrangement of the site's top menu to make it easier to find the content you're looking for.

Content commenting system launched
We've just launched a simple commenting system for our news items, previews and galleries, with more sections to follow. Dpreview: Email notifications of new content and forum activity
Just launched: Email notification of new content. We've been doing some behind-the-scenes work on the site and can now offer the first of a series of additional features: email updates. Visiting the 'Notifications' tab of the 'Edit my settings' option in your profile will allow you to specify which emails you wish to receive, and how often. You can receive messages every time a news story is posted or opt for either hourly or daily summaries. You can also choose to receive similar updates and summaries about responses to posts you've made in the forums, or to forum threads that you've bookmarked.

Studio comparisons improved. Fujifilm X100 and others added
Just Posted: Our improved studio comparison tool, with five additional cameras. As something of a trailer for our forthcoming in-depth review, we've added Fujifilm X100 samples in both Raw and JPEG. The Samsung NX100, Nikon Coolpix P300, Canon 5D Mark II and Sony DSLR A900 have also joined the list of available cameras. But the biggest change is that we've updated our comparison tool to make it more flexible: you can now create your own comparisons of up to four cameras, even if they haven't been fully reviewed. You can then copy the URL from the address bar of your browser, allowing you to easily share or bookmark your chosen comparisons.
