Sony a6000 promises world's fastest AF and 11 fps subject tracking

Sony has released its new a6000 mirrorless camera, which is the replacement to the NEX-6. This midrange mirrorless features a 24MP CMOS sensor, Sony's latest Bionz X processor, and a refined Hybrid AF system that covers 92% of the frame with phase-detect points. The new AF system allows for continuous shooting at 11 fps with subject tracking, and also promises the 'world's fastest autofocus', according to Sony. The camera now offers zebra pattern and clean HDMI output for movie lovers. Those who love the XGA EVF on the NEX-6 may be disappointed by the smaller, lower resolution one on the a6000.

The camera will be available in silver or black for $650 body only, or $800 when kitted with the 16-50 F3.5-5.6 power zoom lens.

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 11, 2014 – Sony Electronics’ new α6000 camera pushes the limits of mirrorless camera innovation, boasting the world’s fastest AF performance1 at just 0.06 seconds. 

The speedy new camera (model ILCE-6000) is also equipped with a high-resolution 24.3 MP image sensor and powerful BIONZ X processor. This powerful combination of features ensures that still images, full HD videos and all fleeting moments are captured in sharp focus and incredible detail.

New ultra-fast AF system
Even quicker than most professional DSLRs, the phenomenal autofocus speed of the α6000 camera is powered by Sony’s advanced Hybrid AF system.  The new model features a focal plane phase-detection AF sensor with an extremely wide autofocus coverage area – 179 focal points– that is teamed with high-precision contrast-detection AF.  This potent combination allows the camera to accurately track and respond to a subject moving through nearly the entire frame, and to shoot at an eye-popping speed of up to 11 frames per second with continuous autofocus.  It’s an unprecedented combination of speed and frame coverage in today’s market.

Design and Controls
The new camera’s clear, bright OLED Tru-Finder lets you see a live preview of all setting adjustments before the shot is taken, so what you see is exactly what you get.  Conveniently placed mode and control dials on top of the camera give easy access to commonly used settings.  Additionally, a ‘Function’ button and two additional customizable buttons give quick access to any one of 47 assignable functions.  There’s also a built-in flash for extra flexibility in any shooting situation.

Wi-Fi® and PlayMemories™

Pricing and Availability
The Sony α6000 compact interchangeable lens camera will be available in April 2014 in black and silver in a kit with a compact, versatile 16-50mm motorized zoom lens (model SELP1650) for about $800.   It will also be offered separately as a body for about $650.

Sony has also announced the price of its previously announced full frame E-mount 70-200mm F4 G OSS telephoto zoom lens (model SEL70200G).   This lens will be available in March for about $1500.

The new camera and all compatible lenses and accessories will be available at Sony retail stores (www.store.sony.com) and other authorized dealers nationwide.

Is there in the new Sony a6000 any way to save Custom Settings? In the mode dial of the A7r/A7 we see the numbers 1 and 2; there are none on the dial in the A6000. As much as I loved the NEX-7 and its stunning results, there was no way to save settings. When I did tripod-mounted panoramas everything had to be changed to manual, including the focusing and the ISO at 100. For any other type of use it was a real hassle to change everything back to automatic. Often I forgot and kept shooting to discover later that no images were usable.
If there are no means to save at least one custom setting this camera is worthless for me, no matter how advanced. I tried to find this info but I cannot find it anywhere. Please help.

Nice specs, beautiful features, but it's 2014 - the manufacturers should ditch the muddy f3.5+ lenses on such cameras. Everybody wants the same: big sensor+fast lens. It's as easy as that...

am really sorry about the lack of the NEX-7's Tri-Navi UI , that is in fact a very very nice UI that is well thought out and once one get used to the control layout. I have my doubt about the 24MP overall field performance vs the old 16MP ( specifically when light is not that great ). I wouldn't worry about its performance at low ISO, but then anything like ISO400 or above .. well ... the lesser EVF do not help either

Technically speaking I am not seeing this as much of a upgrade or update perhaps with the exception of the on sensor PDAF. Evolutionary update is perhaps the best to describe it, and that's pretty much the case with almost all new camera this year on ; with very little technical innovation or advance.

Wonder if we would see a real NEX-7 replacement with that Tri-Navi and if possible a nice new sensor. Despite what, there is still very much a place for a top end APS-C sensored model for the E mount and this A6000 certainly do not fit

This new camera from Sony, much like similar offerings from other manufactures, regardless of body style, if properly conceived of as a fieldable "35 mm" non laboratory environment like camera will be SUBJECT MATTER COMPOSABLE WITHOUT THE NEED OF TURNING ON ELECTRICAL POWER, or require one to look upon an illuminated screen displaying 3rd order at best image quality with false field illuminance.

On the whole, nearly every camera body being produced and designed today appearing to be fashioned for mentally lazy individuals not wishing to be technically proficient, less relegated to a preconceived of 2 dimensional range, void of much subject matter depth and discipline (a.k.a. subject matter fakes) unlike any time before in the history of photography.

What is being offered today little more than GARBAGE with near unethical planned obsolescence for the sole purpose of increasing short term corporate profit margins, and not long-term product usage.

You are so wrong. We are blessed these days with wonders of engineering and design, especially in the field of photography. If you have the ability, you can now create great images, many not possible even a few years back. You may be alluding to the rapid progress of technology and the improvements it entails. Of course things change, usually for the better. What is good to know is that the new cameras give you the choice of utter simplicity (everything automatic on the mode dial) or as customizable or complicated as you may want.

Little sold today of heirloom design or quality. The trend in the past two decades being to continually lower the bar on the full performance and tool range of the hardware.

The supervising managers that have decided to remove optical viewfinders in place of EO only viewfinders, more than likely removing the simple yet highly functional, low maintenance, low component count transparent windshield from a car or motorcycle helmet.

Choosing in favor of a less visually true, less fault tolerate cranky solution that is difficult to physically service, composed of chemically less stable internal components prone to accelerated decomposition (highly dependent on homogeneity), critically dependent on consumable items (batteries) that functions via an (default condition) opaque screen, that in operation results in reduced visual fidelity, most likely laden with marginally valued added distracting functions.

The camera body offerings today, somewhat analogous to how a fledgling and or pretentious cook, as appose to a skilful chef, creates a "what is that" sort of desert, not being knowable or skillful enough in the arts to produce a basic though very high quality cake or seasoned pie with ice cream.

In closing, please STOP removing basic system hardware functions and or options without first insuring that what is being selected to be the replacement item is superior on most all respects to the predecessor.

Do a job, big or small, do it right or not at all.

And 11fps continuous AF with tracking? The Nikon 1 V2 and S1 can do 15.

Another yawner from Sony-san. Maybe it'll take decent still pix, but the 24MP sensor sounds crowded. Not good for video, of course, as it uses the banged-up old bad codec AVCHD, and Sony had conveniently "forgotten" to add a microphone jack and/or a headphone jack to the body. I guess it'll be good for something nonetheless.

Also, it would be so nice for Sony to finally retire either their E-mount cameras and lenses or else their Alpha mount cameras and lenses. Why have them both?

What's wrong with AVCHD? It's still mpeg-4. Also personally I always use an external audio recorder when doing video, even with a mic socket the analogue amps on a sound recorder tend to be much better than a camera's amps.

Why have both mounts? Because one is optimised for smaller sized lenses by not having space behind the mount for a mirror obviously. It makes sense to have both, because they offer different trade offs. The only company who attempted to use DSLR lenses on a "mirrorless" body was Pentax, and that didn't seem to work out that well for them.

I think where it's headed is they are probably phasing out the alpha mount.
If you look at how NEX is renamed alpha, it seems obvious they are getting rid of the prism that robs you of 30% of the light.
I'd bet my money on E-mount and whatever they call the mount on the new 7/7R, as what will survive beyond 2014.

From some tests available AF seems to be good. Sony needed AF improvement. Sony used to have bad AF-C and small AF area.
But how do people decide that A6000 EVF so much worse than in NEX-7? By specs? Or there some apparent deficiency? Bigger pixels mean better colors and less wiring. Is microdispaly size smaller?

A6000 lacks just one feature. I would pay some more to get SEALED cropped body. But even if Sony does such a camera, it will charge much more.

And there is no 16-50/2.8 cropped lens. A-mount has such lens, and SEALED and with SSM.
f/4 is really not enough for cropped sensor both in terms of ISO and in terms of DOF. There is non-SSM 24-70 FE, which seems to be a good upgrade path. I may go that route after seeing ISO performance tests.

I get it that all that is solved with A7+24-70/4 FE, but there are issues like no Electronic Front Curtain Shutter and also price.

Currently I think I would buy A77 successor, not this one. Or both, SLT will stay home, this one - with me.

It would be great if some trusted camera testing site (wink wink) could verify all those claims of "fastest AF" with independent objective (numerical) testing...

But they'd rather shoot black-and-white resolutions charts in case manufacturers cheat with their megapixel counts (?)...

11 fps with C-AF would be perfect for sports, but Sony APS-C E-mount does not have a single decent sport tele zoom. f/6.3 55-210 and 18-200, nor $1500 FE 70-200/4 need not apply.

Where is that 85mm prime they kept promising us? And now they say, no more APS-C lenses. Just full-frame FE lenses, some of which are 'way too large and expensive for the little A5000 and A6000 cameras. Not to mention all the NEX cameras out there.

Well, I'm not that sure. Cause I would be happy to choose a compact 24-120mm (eq.) f/2.0-3.9 lens over no matter how fast AF speed with a slow lens. Yes, I consider f/3.5 slow for an APS-C. If they make a fast pancake, OK...

never forget:
digicams and smartphones are all mirrorless, most are very small sensor/lens=very high inherent deep dof = closer/closest to 'focus-free' (tinier apertures, sensors very close to lens opening = brighter for af sensors)

next in size ...
m43/nikon1 = next closest expected to fast/easier to AF (minimal focus mechanic adjustment) 'focus-free' demands ... hardly phenomenal, if it is inherent to high/deep dof optics of 'small systems' ...

when a larger system system (apsc or ff) is fast for inherent shallower dof image optics, the AF demands are so much higher for identical incoming light on AF Sensor or image sensor.

and you wonder why disposable film cameras with tiny apertures were 'focus-free' even if the image surface was still far from the lens opening in the film days ... if they had AF ...they only needed one for infinity, and one for macro... and no real 'focusing' task to speak of.

put the AF of m43 behind ff/aps LENS/Body, and it will surely struggle to focus

additionally:
smaller systems
=smaller lens
=smaller apertures
=smaller mechanical (shorter distance for mechanical actions for AF to work)

a 1mm shift in mechanical adjustment for AF translates to focusing FASTER LONGER DISTANCE DIFFERENCES in a smaller system than a larger system:

a tiny adjustment of a given time and mechanical AF movement in: the smallest system can focus from 0 to infinity
a small system can focus from 3m to 30m, easier when dof super deep
a medium system ... 8 to 20 easier deeper dof, worse shallower dof
a large ... only 11 to 12 worse when super shallow
a very large ... 11.5 to 11.6 worse when dof super shallow
(using imaginary values for illustration only)

its just logical smaller systems have easier/less AF mecanical loads when overcoming dof thats hardly ever shallow, and much closer to focus-free conditions than larger systems will ever be.

No touch screen and finder resolution only 1,440,000 with 0,7 magnification.
Nex 6 have 2,359,000 dot finder and 1,09 finder magnification!

Comparing to the NEX-6, sensor and processor have been significantly improved. AF performance is still mysterious. Hope it works well. I am not quite satisfied with the one on NEX-6. New C2 button is lovely, and Fn button is moved to a more reasonable place.

I doubt if the wheel works better than NEX-6. The place is not easy to reach with your thumb. Considering that mode dial is not as frequently used as the wheel, why not swap their position?

Hmm... I am considering A7R. But it may be less responsive in overall operation than A6000. And I got 4 APS-C lenses already. But I really love the photo quality from A7R. How should I pick?

Maybe this is the sensor Nikon has been waiting for with focal plane phase detection for the D400.
