CES 2014: Hands-on with Kodak's M43 Pixpro S-1 and 'Smart Lenses'
Meet the Kodak Pixpro S-1
The Kodak Pixpro S-1 is a lightweight system camera that uses the Micro Four Thirds lens mount. Built around a 16MP Four Thirds sensor (which JK's press release claims is a back-side illuminated design although we haben't yet been able to independently verify that), it is available with a choice of one or two zoom lenses, but of course it is compatible with all existing M43 optics. Although pitched as an entry-level offering, the S-1 does offer a decent feature set, including film emulation modes and RAW capture in the DNG format.
Sadly, operational speed isn't the S-1's strong point. We used an almost-final unit, and in our experience, long lag times between shooting and reviewing images, as well as changing settings, might prove frustrating to enthusiasts interested in the S-1 as a budget option.
