Father's imaginative portraits of daughter guaranteed to make you smile

By dpreview staff on Aug 4, 2013 at 18:15 GMT

There's nothing traditional about photographer Nagano Toyokazu's portraits of his daughter. His unorthodox shots put the girl at the center of a series of whimsical scenes, in turn commanding the attention of a line of yellow rubber ducks, conducting a chorus of frogs and tackling an impossible tower of ice cream scoops on a cone. They're funny, sweet, and probably the most adorable thing you'll see on the internet today.

They made me smile. Very cute photos of a very cute little girl. Why all the gripes about the technical aspects? Just enjoy them.

Go to an art exhibition. Look at the masters. See how they shoot. You might be surprised at how close this lad is. In fact, I wouldn't hesitate to call him the master of a certain moment.

Study up, photography won't elude you forever.

I suspect people are grumpy because they were duped into wasting their time looking at some pretty dull, technically poor snaps as a news story on a photography site. If this had been a thread in one of the gear forums, nobody would have batted an eyelid...

I think DPR stuffed this by overpromising. "guaranteed to make you smile", "series of whimsical scenes" etc. I looked at the photos and was looking for this "whimsical scenes" that would blow my socks off.
I didn't find it.

This is DPR. The photos may be high key but her skin is blown. People talk about that because it is DPR, not FB.

If the title and text were a bit less sensational, just promise me some nice creative photos, I would have been all over it. But sorry, this looks like an infomercial.

If you think her skin is blown, you need to get a better monitor and get it calibrated. Her skin might be bright in places, but that's how real life looks if you have bothered to step outside. In all of the photos on his photostream, the skin has smooth graduated tones. All the detail is there.

And what is it an infomercial for? A 44 year old Pentax 6x7? The fantastic Kodak Portra 400 film which will not blow highlights? A talent who knows how to use his equipment?

I am obviously waaaayyyyy out of tune with this thread .... these are amazingly creative and just plain cute. But technically, they are hard on the eyes. Yuck to the tone, color, and lighting for at least 3/4 of them. But hey ... what do I know.

They were shot on Portra 400 which is optimized for skintones, but tends to be a bit blue-deficient as a consequence. It also tends to have less punchy blacks in my experience. To me these shots just have a classic color negative look.

@Maxfield_photo To me, these have tone and exposure issues that rob the images of a lot of their potential appeal. And if you are referring to the "classic color negative feel" as from an Instamatic, then I agree.

I'm not sure why photos of a guy who shoots film on Medium Format camera which is supposed to be dead because of D800 are featured on this site.

By the way, I've been following his work for a long time, very creative, great use of MF and film. Excellent photos which shows why digital still has a way to go before it gets anywhere near medium format. Or film when it comes to high key photography and not blowing up the highlights.

Just my 2c from someone who still loves and uses his hasselblad 501c more than my digi cams.

Nagano Toyokazu's images are very creative and do bring a smile.
I noticed some really harsh comments from some members, and out of curiosity I checked a few of their galleries. Either it is full of poor images or they have absolutely nothing to show.
I wonder what makes these people tick.

@Nikono, I've seen very creative, but this ain't it. It's /quite/ creative, with average execution, and most people here would have seen similar or better.

Funny how you think the content of people's galleries have anything to do at all with whether the images are good or great. I don't know how to cook but I can judge if a restaurant is average. I'm not as creative as this guy but I've seen enough more creative stuff that I can judge this as only /quite/ creative.

I've seen fathers' creative images and I've seen something only recently making the rounds that if you think this is good, you'll have a stroke when you see that.

Yes yes OK, they're very cute.

But is this what DPR is supposed to be all about? Or is this a traffic-generating ploy?

Sorry guys, but I think you are eroding your own position vis a vis the committed gear-heads (who, lets face it, have always been your core constituency).
