Man breaks own World Record, now owns 4,425 antique cameras

By dpreview staff on Aug 28, 2013 at 18:47 GMT

Mumbai-based photo journalist and camera collector Dilish Parekh has been entered into the Guinness Book of World Records for the second time. The previous record holder? Parekh himself. His collection has now grown to 4,425 antique cameras, ranging from Leica to Voigtlander.

Mr. Parekh started with 600 cameras, passed onto him by his father. Over the next 25 years, his collection grew by leaps and bounds, and he became the world record holder when he reached 2,634 cameras. 'Cameras are my life. I can't stay without them', Parekh said.

So what are some of the most impressive pieces of his collection? One is a 1934 Leica 250, of which there were less than 1000 made. Another is the tiny Tessina L, which is one of the world's smallest and lightest 35mm cameras.

If you're closing in on Dilish Parekh's record or just have a cool antique camera, leave a note in the comments section.

The best part? When he yanks the sheet and cameras stay in place!

If he concentrated on Minox, Tessina and Compass he'd still have enough room to sleep in his bed.

When people ask me why I shoot film I tell them it's for many reasons but the main one being the amazing variety of beautifully designed cameras and different formats. This guy obviously knows all about that.

That's nothing... I have one camera with about 5,000 different personalities. Does that count? I own the Sibyl SD15. No shot is ever the same.

Occasionally I like Guinness beer, but seeing a man with the longest nails in the World is also a difficult moment for me.

Interesting, as Dillish Parekh didn't announce it until the 19th, supposedly.

If it wasn't for people with this urge and passion to collect, there would be a lot less museums now - so it's useful.
Then again, some say that "if you keep things long enough, you can throw them away". So, it's useless.
But there is the joy and feeling of accomplishment in anything we do, whatever it might be, as long as it makes us happy. And that's priceless.

Except maybe having to dust them off every so often... this detail looks more like a career than a job...

Just signing in to make the same remark as Chas2 has made but my A and Z were Alpa and Zenit. Surprised his collection is so narrow
