Leica announces $1300 special edition 'G-Star RAW' D-Lux 6

By dpreview staff on Jun 19, 2013 at 22:11 GMT

Leica has announced a special edition of its D-Lux 6 high-end compact camera, in collaboration with clothing manufacturer G-Star RAW. The special D-Lux 6 (itself arguably a 'special edition' Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX7) will be available from Leica Stores and Boutiques worldwide, and is expected to cost around $1300 - around $800 more than the standard D-Lux 6 and roughly $1000 more than the LX7.

What do you get for your money? Well, 'a new dot structure on the leather body trim' and a leather case with 'exclusive carrying strap'. And a red dot, of course.

This is the new 'RAW' edition Leica D-Lux 6, which comes with a different body finish and leather case with an 'exclusive' carrying strap. It will be available from Leica stores worldwide, at a rumored price of $1300.

According to G-Star, the collaboration with Leica is 'natural', since 'both brands utilise design where form follows function, and stand for high-quality products of authenticity and durability'. The New York-based company has previously collaborated with bicycle manufacturer Cannondale, Hennessy cognac, Land Rover and it even got its name on the side of a 1927 canal boat in Amsterdam

In this video, Shubhankar Ray, Global Brand Director for G-Star, talks about the collaboration between G-Star and Leica Camera on the limited special edition camera Leica D-Lux 6 'Edition by G-Star RAW.'

Honestly, it looks very cool. If I was the kind of person where $1300 and $400 were both just ashtray change, I'd pick this Leica.

Reimagine me puking... I buy $16 jeans (Wrangler)... and have the best cameras in the world around my neck (they're just not Leicas) ... I find the quick jump cuts and ultra close-ups on jeans seams to be silly and pointless. My God the emperor has NO CLOTHES and they still insist on talking about how hip and cool he looks!

I think the Earth will continue spinning in the right direction and photography world make even more sense once we are all content with a reassurance from Leica that Scarlet Johansson will have a brand new piece of electronic jewellery in her purse.

Based on the comments here, DPReview readers must be very sad and unhappy people who, instead of spending their extra money on tangible collectors items like this Leica, are instead spending their money on doctors and drugs to fix the ills they bring on themselves with all of their unhappiness. Just look around....

I like the poetic vein when they explain and justify why this camera and the price asked. They are real poets to try to convince ourselves and justify we pay $ 1000 more for a "Panasonic LX7" dressed by Leica / RAW. They almost had me convinced me.

The LX7 is an impressive small sensor camera. I'm sure some Leica users (collectors?) will want the one with the red dot, but I'd rather just get the LX7 for 1/3rd the price. After all, the same image quality will come out of the cameras.

No need to Crystal Gaze, no fortune teller. clear as daylight the writing is on the wall for Leica. On a death spiral and hanging by past deeds, sinking brand image, utterly disgusting re-branded products. Lack of any serious innovation for quite a few years or even couple of decades now....I never owned a true Leica, but looks like I would never want to own one! Who is the moron at the helm of Leica?? What is he smoking?

While this Leica seems ridiculous to most of us it's good to remember that most of "our" cameras seem pretty ridiculous to many people. Most of this is excessive, it's just a matter of where you choose to draw the line. If you don't believe it just wander through all the shots of homeless people taken with camera+lens combos that cost thousands of dollars.

But FFS Leica, you could make that line-drawing a little more challenging, couldn't you?

Sort of true.
However most of us will buy the most economical product to get the feature set we want.
Other people might not understand why we want the features.
The feature being sold ehre is exclusivity and very few people who value exclusivity read this site.

It is bad enough that the regular D-Lux 6 is $799.

What does one get for the extra $400? Not to speak of the extra $600 for this thing.

You probably just glanced at the text as it's pretty clear: for the extra $400 over d-lux 6 you get "a new dot structure on the leather body trim and a leather case with exclusive carrying strap."

The announcement says it all. A fashion statement just like previous "titanium" or "safari" edition. This time with super-premium price tag. The "RAW edition" imprint is clever but misleading and not even worthy a laugh.
How about tossing in some EVF or at least a decent grip, Leica? I guess added value is not important for targeted audience. And Leica knows it well.

Decent grips are your department, Richard. I love my V1 Richard Franiec grip. Looks and works splendidly and a great value. Unlike this absurd camera. I understand the fool from G Star RAW was waving around a lot of money, but Leica could have said, "No, thanks, our brand is important to us." Leica executives don't know how to say 'no'.

@Simon Joinson:
You ask too much. It is, of course, a camera. But the scope of the site is, or should be, tighter than that. The press release is not _news-worthy_ -- not to your readers. This press release is to news about photography as your printing it is to editing a Website devoted to photography. Leica can market all the over-priced crap it wants, and you can press the publish button for every press release you get -- but in neither case am I going to devote any attention.

The only reason I bothered writing this was in thanks for DPR being useful to me in the past.

Sigh.

Sad that the value of owning something that very few will have - itself has value, and is supremely ridiculous. That, is the only appeal to some of this camera. Very few will own it, very few will have bragging rights to it.

That the price of it, and "special edition" of it, makes it scarce in comparison to the LX7 underneath it's skin- and that is all the incentive some need to have it.

Law of supply and demand. What is worthless now becomes priceless when there are few or no others left to be had.

Even if you own a Ford Pinto.

Glad I can easily resist that temptation however. Bragging rights are never more important than a good experience- or a good bang for the buck.

It's great. Someone is thinking of something different with regard to image making tools. I bet that despite the photographers complaints, they will make money on this, and we need them to be profitable to continue to exist. It might not be my cup of tea, but that's only because I am too poor and therefore too jealous.
