83-year-old fashionista is photographer's muse for Sartorialist-styled blog

By dpreview staff on Mar 28, 2013 at 21:25 GMT

An 83-year-old Turkish tailor has become photographer Zoe Spawton's muse for her blog 'What Ali Wore.' The Tumblr blog, styled after the popular fashion photograhy blog, The Sartorialist, features just Ali and his impeccable taste in clothes. In an interview with German website Spiegel.de, the photographer explains how Ali caught her eye as he passed by the cafe where she works wearing a new ensemble every day. Her daily snapshots of his ever-alternating outfits evolved into a full-blown photo project. Click through to see the photos and a link to Zoe's blog. (via Spiegel.de)

Do you have an interesting photo project you are working on? We would love to hear about it.

The most recent photo of Ali posted on 'What Ali Wore'
From Zoe's blog - 'First photo! Ali walks past the cafe I work at in Berlin every morning at 9:05am. I’m not sure where he is going, but we always say hello to each other. He always wears such great clothes. I don’t speak much German and he speaks a little bit of English, but I managed to ask if I could take his photo. He gladly accepted. '
In the interview with Spiegel.de, Zoe says they don't shoot everyday.  Ali has his days when he doesn't want to be photographed.

He looks good, I am that age (86) and that same type of stocky build,
can never get anything to fit, and can't afford to get bespoke
tailoring.

That would be a 'fashionisto' in this case.

I love this series. As a working photographer, parent of three, etc, I rarely take the opportunity to go shoot something for the hell of it. I have to congratulate the photographer for sticking with it and capturing the character of Ali. Of course, I have to give equal kudos to Ali for presenting the opportunity, he looks great! I had fun viewing the photos just for the create involved.

Lovely theme and heartwarmingly executed. On a totally irrelevant aspect, some horrific CA and busy bokeh going on. Can't have everything I suppose.

Awesome!
I enjoyed every picture in all 4 pages!!
Interesting career switch from a doctor to a tailor, and still working at this age.
Good for him.
I guess he has to continue to work so he can afford all these suits! :)

Thanks for sharing, Zoe.

I don't see a single image out of focus. The photos are beautiful. I do see a shallow depth of field with an out-of-focus background (bokeh) that draws your attention to the subject--Ali and his fantastic wardrobe.

I don't see any images out of focus. But then again, the subject is so captivating I probably wouldn't notice, and couldn't care less if they were.

Look at the original photos in the blog, the ones from the Spiegel are spoiled by scrappy down sampling.

She posts his photo even though she knows there are days when he doesn't want to be photographed? (Last photo)

Hmm. Are we supposed to admire her for this? I mean, technically she is getting her own publicity by using this man. The least she could do is obey his wishes.

This picture was the first picture taken after he had not wanted to be photographed for three days. He was happy with this one being taken. The photographer totally respects his 'no-photography-days'.

if you read the blog, he declined to be photographed several days in a row but agreed on the day of the last photo. he was hamming for her to make up for the missed days. she does not shot him when he refuses.

Bright red shirt and white trousers? There goes another theory, right out of the window... (that of 'impeccable taste').

Seriously, how is this news.

The bright red shirt and white pants look great, an excellent mix. Not everybody can carry off such a spunky and bright look. It seems Ali can and I love those red shoes.
BTW Rob, life is not lived in "theory", it is lived in actuality.

It would be neat if more people of his age had the health and desire and means to take such pride in their appearance. I find him to be a much more interesting photo subject than most of the 'street' shots I see, which tend to be B/W photos of random strangers doing nothing of interest (and often of their behinds). This guy is interesting.
