Canon Korea teases new camera, EOS M2 or SL1/100D?

By dpreview staff on Nov 9, 2013 at 16:30 GMT

Canon Korea has put up a teaser page for a new camera release. Showing a camera covered in a white sheet, the teaser text reads, 'November 2013, Canon will start from the white world. Coming soon,' according to a Google translation of the site dicahub.com. While some rumors contemplate an EOS M2 or pro camera, application of a few simple Photoshop tweaks, as dicahub did, reveals a few details that make the camera look an awful lot like a white SL1 with a partially white 40mm STM lens attached. (See below for update)

A screen capture of the teaser image on Canon Korea's website.

We took the liberty of adjusting the image in Photoshop and found ghost images of the infrared receiver window, the self-timer lamp, and the lens release button, as well as a fairly obvious image of the 40mm F2.8 STM lens, but with a white outer ring and a black face. Also, of course, there's the black Canon logo showing through the white sheet, contrasting with the usual white Canon logo on a black body.

More details come out with a simple adjustment in Photoshop.

Overlaying our image from the SL1/100D review shows that the elements line up quite well, with the exception of the shoulder on the right side of the image, which extends a bit more than it should (though that could simply be how the fabric draped off the body).

The EOS 100D shot from our review, shown here at 65% opacity, lines up quite well with the four major elements, as the red outlines show, plus the logo.

Or might the extra bump on the right be a sign of an articulating LCD? It's pure conjecture at this point, but we thought it was interesting enough to mention.

Update 11/11/2013: Canon Japan has posted a video on its Facebook page, entitled 'White Kiss!?' It's simply a pair of 'kiss' lips singing 'We wish you a Merry Christmas.' 'Kiss' is the domestic Japanese name for the Rebel/X00D-series of digital SLRs, lending further weight to the thought that Canon is about to release a white 100D, at least for parts of Asia.

Based on my degree in marketing that I don't have ;), I think it would be smart of Canon to respond to the a7s by highlighting their lenses. Only Nikon can compete with their lineup. After all, you sell the lower end equipment through lust for the high end.

DPReview should really refrain from posting rumours and speculations to generate website traffic. You already know everything and probably have the camera in your hands; pretending to speculate is silly, to put it lightly.

This isn't a rumor. It is an image posted by Canon. Speculating is not the same as gossip. For reference see 23 hours of every 24 hour news channel on cable. They take it beyond speculation and insert wildly obvious bias, hate and anger, a complete lack of any logic, and pisspoor fact checking.

if I were to pick the color of the body of a new upcoming model ...

I'd pick ...

a programmable color OLED display curved/conformable surface covering all body surfaces that can take on any color or pattern or shape/visual patterns ... a chameleon body ... a mini-back facing lens to capture/display what's behind the camera, so a camera could disappear into it's surroundings (camouflage, cloak of invisibility!), or vice-a-versa, stand out like a vivid beacon ... glow your favourite colors ... nightlight ... or daylight ... watch netflix on it ... get it to mimic your pet, or a higher end model ... or lower one ... or ... it has a screensaver mode and looks alive to remind you you have left it on ...

but then alt/non-black rainbow color models exist further down

that's what mfrs do for many basic pocket dcams ... (smartphones, etc)

Brands like Nikon and Canon chose the tease video/picture so they can read all about us.
With all due respect my fellow 'clickers' I wonder if I had to choose other brand (not being Nikon or Canon) which would be?
Perhaps at the end of the line I start to have a tease of a smartphone!!Who knows?

It could be that they just threw a cloth over an SL1 to take the shot as an illustration and it has nothing to do with the actual camera that will be announced. I would not put much importance on this image.

That's the brilliance of this campaign. We are speculating what's under the cloth, but the new product is in plain sight. It's a new Canon microfiber cleaning cloth in pure white. As pure as the driven snow for the crystal clean your lenses deserve.... and I guess your cameras too... ;)

Just what is it that "we really want"? We are all different and have varying needs and preferences, so please don't presume to speak for everyone as though we all agree with you. You mean like the 6D?

> don't give us a "retro POS" like Nikon is with that DF joke.

So you think the Df is a "joke" and DPR thinks the Df is "silly".

I'm seeing a pattern here. You and DPR must know something that nearly 50% of people clicking on camera links for the Nikon Df don't.

It is a joke. Have you seen the silver version of it ? It looks like they took parts of 5 different camers to get it done. Have you seen the price of the thing ?
It is a joke, and a very bad joke as well. Now people will buy it but that DOES NOT mean camers is good, it just means that there are a lot of people with more money then brains out there.
Britney Spears music sucks big time and now pritty much nobody remembers her, while Mozart will always be remembered. 10 years ago all you could hear was that poor girl on a radio. Same thing aplies to Nikons lates junk, it will be here for a while and it will just go puff, gone.
Have you stoped to consider that those clicking on it just wan't to show/see a lame try to copy Fuji and thair retro sucess ?

You're wrong. There are very few people who want a full frame camera. Most people are happy with crop sensors because they are cheap and way better than their point and shoot. Only people like us who frequent this site care anything about full frame, which is to say a tiny minority. Get over yourself.

Says you. Not sure why anyone should care what you think about the Df but obviously by the unprecedented percentage of click throughs the Nikon Df is getting on DPR, the overwhelming majority of people don't agree with your expert analysis.

> Have you stoped to consider that those clicking on it just wan't to show/see a lame try

Here in the US the Df is already a top seller on Amazon so clearly people are doing more than just clicking on Df links, they are buying it. If it's not for you, who cares?

None of the above conspiracies is true. We don't have the camera. I wanted to post it right when I wrote it, at about 7:00 pm pacific, but also wanted someone else to read it. It was obvious enough I thought someone else would easily notice too, so I was hoping to post it last night. But I waited for another editor to look at it. He did so very late at night after I'd gone to bed, so I posted it in the morning. Simple as that. We don't have time to sit around conspiring to deceive or steal other people's stuff. There are billions of people in the world and hundreds of millions of them have computers; it's no surprise someone else would notice what a large camera company posted online. I saw the story, looked at the image in Photoshop, saved my images, and credited my sources. End of story.

xxD cameras usually shown with EF-S lens. 40mm pancake lens could indicate that the camera is full frame. It could be 6D Mini with smaller weight and size. It could be full frame M2. It makes sense because in slow economy it is better to reduce size and reduce price. They can sell more cameras than super-expensive super-megapixel stuff.

"White is the most commonly used color in Korea. Koreans were sometimes referred to as "the white clad people"... The color white symbolizes purity, innocence, peace and patriotism", according to an eHow article.

It's probably just an existing camera model, such as the 100D, in the color white, with no additional changes or upgrades.

Not true. All we have is this image. And if it is what it seems, there's not much reason for us to be pre-briefed. It could also be a less expensive model, or more feature-rich. But since it's being teased in Korea, it might also be Korea-only.
