Canon Korea teases new camera, EOS M2 or SL1/100D?

By dpreview staff on Nov 9, 2013 at 16:30 GMT

Canon Korea has put up a teaser page for a new camera release. Showing a camera covered in a white sheet, the teaser text reads, 'November 2013, Canon will start from the white world. Coming soon,' according to a Google translation of the site dicahub.com. While some rumors contemplate an EOS M2 or pro camera, application of a few simple Photoshop tweaks, as dicahub did, reveals a few details that make the camera look an awful lot like a white SL1 with a partially white 40mm STM lens attached. (See below for update)

A screen capture of the teaser image on Canon Korea's website.

We took the liberty of adjusting the image in Photoshop and found ghost images of the infrared receiver window, the self-timer lamp, and the lens release button, as well as a fairly obvious image of the 40mm F2.8 STM lens, but with a white outer ring and a black face. Also, of course, there's the black Canon logo showing through the white sheet, contrasting with the usual white Canon logo on a black body.

More details come out with a simple adjustment in Photoshop.

Overlaying our image from the SL1/100D review shows that the elements line up quite well, with the exception of the shoulder on the right side of the image, which extends a bit more than it should (though that could simply be how the fabric draped off the body).

The EOS 100D shot from our review, shown here at 65% opacity, lines up quite well with the four major elements, as the red outlines show, plus the logo.

Or might the extra bump on the right be a sign of an articulating LCD? It's pure conjecture at this point, but we thought it was interesting enough to mention.

Update 11/11/2013: Canon Japan has posted a video on its Facebook page, entitled 'White Kiss!?' It's simply a pair of 'kiss' lips singing 'We wish you a Merry Christmas.' 'Kiss' is the domestic Japanese name for the Rebel/X00D-series of digital SLRs, lending further weight to the thought that Canon is about to release a white 100D, at least for parts of Asia.

Why would you hope that? So we can have teeny tiny mirrorless cameras with barely usable EVFs, bridge cameras and auto everything smartphones?

Tons of people appreciate well done APS-C DSLRs like those from Canon, Pentax and Nikon. If they are not your cup of tea, nobody is forcing you to buy them.

Mirrorless cameras are o.k , but i do prefer DSLR's just like you. On the other hand this kind of products (low end) (Canon m2 or 100d, Apple 5c e.t.c) owe their existence to recycle old parts from older products

When you are in dense traffic, you have more chances to escape by needle eyed escape hole with a Smart, than with a Mercedes Benz, but once you're stuck, and you have to sit and wait, you see where the advantages of Mercedes are. You can't have it all.

Carry a heavy DSLR around a day, you will cry, try to shoot handheld Makro with 125/2.8 lens, and you will cry too. So, give to God what is for God, and give to Ceasar what is for Caesar. Our universe lives by duality, and that duality gives you the choice between this and that, and this choice again makes this and that live and exist.

So, dslr will die, an utopia, mirrorless will take it over, one more utopia. In some way, people we make our hobby become religion, as I can see by what you write. Canon, Nikon, Sony, Allah, Jesus, Yehowah, make your choice, and stop fighting and hating each other for that.

EOS-M is the system name (the mount is called EF-M) so all cameras will have almost certainly have M. When they get round to fleshing their mirrorless system out I'd think they'll add some zeros for the more serious models (EOS-M100) or some extra letters (EOS-MF etc.) but still keep the M.

based on other recent Canon responses to new products from less risk averse manufacturers (think GX1, M and SL1) rather than create a new line I wouldn't be surprised if Canon responds by stuffing a FF 18 mpx sensor into a small proven consumer friendly design like a D700 size (without flip out screen) - so yes let them eat FF cake

One of the best ads I've ever seen was a guy trudging into a car rental place with a sad look on his face, all ready to be stuck with another Toyota Corolla or (then) Pontiac Grand Am. Then he goes outside and smiles, the car waiting for him was a 1971 Dodge Challenger R/T Sports car. "The Fun is Back!"
The ad was for a lottery.

If Canon wants to generate enthusiasm this won't do it. How about a series of videos of a guy with a blank expression, walking aimlessly through the woods....only you won't see his blank expression because he's covered with a table cloth! I shouldn't be giving away these ideas for free.

Sorry Canon, this looks like another camera that takes perfectly good pictures, rates slightly below Nikon on DxO and sells by the truckload.

Yes, a fair point, it is an official teaser, but what is that if not a device to get the rumour mill and its surrounding buzz started?

Most companies seem to engage in the rumour business at some level now, if not through teasers then through stage managed leaks, pre-announcements and semi-exclusive interviews.

And I didn't call it a rumour, I said you were engaging in the rumour mill, you folks need to learn to read before you post ;-)

Now you're splitting hairs. You shouldn't admit it's a fair point, then act like you didn't mean it 'that way.'

If anything, this post - if on point - takes the air out of their attempt to tease. That was not its purpose; its purpose was to illustrate what we saw and share it with the larger audience. I prefer camera companies tease rather than leak. One approach honestly takes advantage of the interest surrounding digital camera introductions; the other gives away everything, killing the interest on announcement day.

It's difficult to argue with that. I'm still using a six year old 1Ds3 and a four year old 1D4, because there is nothing new in the Canon line that would make a difference to me. They are putting effort into video/stills hybrid cameras, but I use a proper XF300 for most of my video use. Mean while I see new Nikons that I'd really quite like to own, but not enough to reinvest in a bunch of new lenses. It's not a disaster though, as it saves us money, and something amazing will be released in the next year or two, or three...

For me, Canon's enduring success is that their lenses, so many of them, have such excellent bokeh. That's not true of Nikon or Sony. Sure, they have one or two but they aren't as consistent as Canon's zooms. And zooms are the money lenses.

The problem for canon now is that everyone else has caught on to the bokeh dream. And horribly, with cheap aspherics, it's possible to produce a sharp and bokelicious lens.

Hello Fuji, goodbye Canon.

Nah, probaly not.. i guess they will release 20 more 'dumbed down' bodies compared to its competitors and ask hundreds of euros extra for the sake of product diversification.

Expect another body that has the same features as canon's bodies 6 years ago ( 3 fps.. d'oh) only slightly more megapixels (BRAND NEW SENSOR!) and some more marketing rubbish slangs like "Lightest camera ever!".. All this for exactly the same price back then since nothing ever changes at canon.

That's all we've reported, because we thought camera fans would like to know. If that's not you, feel free to proceed to our many other credible and trustworthy reviews. so someone is doing "photoshop forensics" under the assumption that the person making the veiled marketing image would use an image of the new product underneath? Wouldn't you just pick any random body and make the image from that? The whole point is to reveal that it's a canon slr body and nothing more. An image of any canon slr body will do.

DPReview Staff
By DPReview Staff (5 months ago)

Actually, logically that is less likely, though certainly possible. The person making the veiled marketing image was careful to let certain features show, it seems to me. Other teaser campaigns have looked like the camera that's eventually revealed, albeit sometimes with skewed angles designed to deceive. We haven't said this is conclusive, just that the 100D's size and features seem to fit under the cloth.
