Canon Korea teases new camera, EOS M2 or SL1/100D?

By dpreview staff on Nov 9, 2013 at 16:30 GMT

Canon Korea has put up a teaser page for a new camera release. Showing a camera covered in a white sheet, the teaser text reads, 'November 2013, Canon will start from the white world. Coming soon,' according to a Google translation of the site dicahub.com. While some rumors contemplate an EOS M2 or pro camera, application of a few simple Photoshop tweaks, as dicahub did, reveals a few details that make the camera look an awful lot like a white SL1 with a partially white 40mm STM lens attached. (See below for update)

A screen capture of the teaser image on Canon Korea's website.

We took the liberty of adjusting the image in Photoshop and found ghost images of the infrared receiver window, the self-timer lamp, and the lens release button, as well as a fairly obvious image of the 40mm F2.8 STM lens, but with a white outer ring and a black face. Also, of course, there's the black Canon logo showing through the white sheet, contrasting with the usual white Canon logo on a black body.

More details come out with a simple adjustment in Photoshop.

Overlaying our image from the SL1/100D review shows that the elements line up quite well, with the exception of the shoulder on the right side of the image, which extends a bit more than it should (though that could simply be how the fabric draped off the body).

The EOS 100D shot from our review, shown here at 65% opacity, lines up quite well with the four major elements, as the red outlines show, plus the logo.

Or might the extra bump on the right be a sign of an articulating LCD? It's pure conjecture at this point, but we thought it was interesting enough to mention.

Update 11/11/2013: Canon Japan has posted a video on its Facebook page, entitled 'White Kiss!?' It's simply a pair of 'kiss' lips singing 'We wish you a Merry Christmas.' 'Kiss' is the domestic Japanese name for the Rebel/X00D-series of digital SLRs, lending further weight to the thought that Canon is about to release a white 100D, at least for parts of Asia.

Men on equipment forums certainly won't understand the point of this white SL1, but from a business perspective I think it's a no-brainer for Canon in the Asian market. Asian women will love it. Asian women are already the biggest buyers of Canon's "Kiss" cameras in that region. So a cute white version of their smallest and cutest "Kiss" model is easy money for Canon. This white camera kit will do well this Christmas, especially with the blatant "white Christmas" marketing campaign.

Looks like a pretty smart move to me. Canon probably knows the Asian market very well. The SL1 in white cost then nothing to develop, but it will appeal very strongly to Asian women. And clearly, the video add features an Asian woman using the camera. Sell to your market = smart move. A white SL1 should do very well amongst Asian women.

Sony: new sensor.
Canon: new paint job.

C'mon, Canon... make a EOS M2 with modern sensor and proper AF and EVF, working with EF lenses without the need for a $400 adapter.. even if it's an APS-C. I would gladly give Canon a second chance.

Nikon and Canon decided to go vintage not only with their cameras but also with adverts. It wasn't much fun back in 1976 when this was first used. And neither it is now. Especially, as it was with with Df, if the camera "unveiled" is, honestly, a failure.

It sounds like Canon is planning to release a pro series camera in white color.
Perhaps to match the white (cream) color L line of lenses?

Since the release is in November, my guess is that DPR already has a copy for "first impression" and sample photos, and they probably are laughing at all our blabbing.

People here are putting far too much attention to the word 'white' in the teaser text. I am sure that something got lost in the translation from Korean. A white rhinocerous is just as grey as any other... Google translation is not bad considering it is free, but I would not rely on it for anything serious.

nuh. My money goes to white version of 100D, along with white version of 18-55, 40 stm duo kit.

reason:

1. super mini FF camera would not be first teased in Korea. No offense, but that market is just not important enough.

2. as of current indicators, Canon is still weighing the size of mirrorless market (note although being quite some topic, the global volume is not there yet), especially compared to the lucrative professional video line.

as a company, they only have that much of resource. to gain max return out of minimal investment, logic choice would be colorize the 100D series to attract the young and colorful.

These guesses are even funnier than the what the Df was supposed to be.

This should be a regular feature. Next time DPR gets a "pre-production" camera (which has to be the same as the finished model, otherwise you couldn't evaluate it) DPR staff can cover it with a sheet, or better, a changing bag, and let people guess.

The person whose guess is off by the most wins and competition will be intense.

If it`s a M2, I guess Canon wants a new chance to clean the name of the mark. So the sense common would say that the troubles about AF of the first M will not appear anymore and, maybe, the IQ would be better.

About the review, well, the happy guys of DP that love light gear (me too) have shown us that there are two possibilities: 1- if the machine is so bad like the M1, they'r going to say that there is a lot of work and bla bla... At the end, it will pass a year without a review (it was the fortune of the first M). 2. But if it`s a good or at least a decent machine, the happy friends of DP will offer us a complete review very soon...

"You can have any colour as long as it's black." - Henry Ford

If I could fathom a guess, (based on a desire) I'd like to see a FF response to the Sony A7r. Assuming that additional hump on image right is to accommodate a larger magnesium frame, and maybe it's taller, (not on a pedestal) to suggest a vertical grip/shutter? Oh, built in wifi would be nice for tether free shooting.

You can't, unless you product the same. Is there any alternative? think about that first. All you can do is work at the sensor, the jpeg rework, but, is there anything to do to challenge Sony's system in versatility. All you can do is make the perfect more perfect. What Nikon did, was a huge move, but with all we do in life, it does not matter what we do, but how we do it, and here Nikon failed, they did what they had to do, but they made it half ficus, half raisin. So, will we now see another donkey in a 2750$ suit issued by Canon? Let's wait and see.

Let's not forget Canon still holds the record when it comes to best-selling cameras, and let's not forget Canon was the first to introduce DSLRs, was the first to introduce Video in DSLRs like 5dMII which revolutionized the DSLR market and took digital photography to another level...

Well I suppose Canon know what they're doing. If you don't like or need the new camera that Canon announces you'd better stick to what you already own...
