Not just any competition: Roger Cicala's First Annual Photogeek Contest

By dpreview staff on Nov 1, 2013 at 11:37 GMT

Roger Cicala of LensRentals is man after our own hearts, never happier than when tinkering with lenses and writing about what he finds, however obscure it may turn out to be. And in celebration of this, he's launched what we'd like to think of as the ultimate photo competition: The First Annual Photogeek Geek Photo Contest. Full of entertaining categories, and with at least one hugely desirable prize on offer, it's open for entries until November 15th. It's Roger's competition so we're not going to reveal too much here; head over to LensRentals and have a look. If nothing else, it should make you laugh.

Disclaimer: DPReview.com Technical Editor Andy Westlake is one of the competition judges, and really, really wants that cutaway Zeiss.

Lens Rentals should totally slice their written off junked lenses in half.

They would make great profits from geeks fondling the thing the whole day...

What happened to the other half of that cutaway Zeiss. It must be somewhere, so If we could get both halfs, all you need is a little bit of quick glue, or just masking tape, and hey presto, you got a treasure in your hands.

With two halves, maybe it is possible to shoot 3D pictures ?

Not really, as for 3D you'd need 3 halves.

A Lensbaby prize for the corner sharpness freaks? Is it a form of shock therapy?

What would be your choice of prize to entice you to enter the contest?

With a significant number of lens samples Roger has at his disposal and hands on experience with working with them in a long run, he is (in my mind) uniquely qualified and trustworthy person in the industry to reveal the facts about particular lens within the scope of competing counterparts or on its own merits. He has done that so many times and his revelations might sometimes be surprising but always backed up with empirical evidence.

This contest is just an icing on the cake.

Challenges are also kind of contest, you know, only that they tend to be held by what was described as "a bunch of artsy types that wouldn’t know acutance from aberrations"...

The competition is going to be cut-throat. Those nerds are too scary for me. I'll stick to the artsy fartsy stuff thank you.

One category is missing - shots made with self-made digital cameras.

That sounds promising. Suppose a *self-made* camera can shoot itself as the subject; then the next logical breakthrough is a "self-replicating" camera.
