PPE 2013: Hands on with Fujifilm's newest cameras

We're at the Photo Plus Expo in New York, and one of the busiest stands belongs to Fujifilm, which is showing off its new XQ1 and X-E2 cameras, as well as this year's other key products, the X20 and X100S. We're running around the show having meetings and trying out all of the latest gear, but earlier today we stopped by the Fujifilm stand to say hi and get our hands on the new gear.

This is the new X-E2, which features the same 16MP X-trans sensor as the X100S, and also inherits its innovative hybrid phase-detection autofocus. Manual focus gets an overhaul as well, thanks to digital split-image, 'rangefinder-type', and peaking focus aids.

Fuji MUST publish a raw converter, hopefully as a plugin to Bridge/Photoshop, but a standalone version would be good too. It is nice to be able to convert within the camera, but wow, is it slow if you want to do a lot! If it can be done inside the camera, surely it can be done outside the camera too!

Don't know why, but I really like the design on the XQ1, and the sample images I've seen from it look very good.

Funny. I was there and noticed Fuji X100S cameras standing untouched by anybody...

Update yourself before you comment in a forum like DPR. This camera is very near to become the camera of the year and you're saying this .. I feel pity for you man..!!!

Even if it were obsolete you can count on Fuji to provide firmware updates to keep you happy.

Bother. My XE-1 is obsolete after only three months. I'll have to stop looking here for a few years.

Just got an X-E1, it's not obsolete at all. I'm have more fun shooting than ever. The X-E2 looks great, but is more of an incremental update to an already great camera.

You might be obsolete every 3 months.

I recently bought a D1X, and a R-D1 ... you probably forgot what it was,
But they are not obsolete at all, it's in the mind :)

That's the usual psychological effect of "Better is the enemy of good."

Instead, one could compare X-E1 images to latest Canon images made with APS-C sensors.

Come on guys. I believe DB3 was joking about "obsolete".

@mcshan: I think DB3 was half-joking. It's never fun to spend a chunk of change only to realize that it could have been spent "better" only a short time later.

Thank you, mcshan and JP. You got my drift.

Have been on holiday for a week, practising with the camera. I'm relieved to find it still works.

Would it be even better if they built it with a 45mm sensor? Bigger isn't always better.

Yes, specs are important. Must have 5-axis stabilization. On what would certainly be a fixed wide lens camera.
