Another Hasselblad rebadge or Photoshopped hoax?

By dpreview staff on Oct 17, 2013 at 18:24 GMT

Various rumor sites are today reporting Hasselblad is poised to release a $10,000 camera called the 'Hasselblad Solar,' a rebadge of the Sony A7 that was announced just yesterday. Some even report it as if it's a real product. Even just a cursory glance at the image suggests it's a quick Photoshop job to add a wood grip and lighten the tint of the body. The serial number on the lens suspiciously matches the product shots Sony released yesterday as well.

What do you think?

Some people also bought gold leaf topped Alpa cameras back in the '70's - I think. I couldn't afford one so I had a pet rock instead. This Hassy looks perfect for stalking the likes of a jackalope and bigfoot. If I were proficient in Solidworks, I'd be hoaxing here as well. Solaris would have been a better name than Solar; a great science fiction story.

ExPERT / Ex, is a 'has been'
Perts / are drop's of water.
There are too many "ExPerts" in this field on this site. With very big 'Egos'.

Hasselblad is still a good company name. If you never worked with one StFu.

Hope this has been of some help to people here.

Oh really? It is very hard to imagine a pro photgrapher who would be willing to spend ca. 6000 euros for a APS-C camera made by Sony. Real photographers don't use so called luxury items.

If someone with money goes shopping they will go for the upper class names. And $10.000 isn't much for them to spend compare to someone that taking money out of they mortgage or limiting a credit card to get $4.000 camera just for the hobby

Looks great and in my opinion, better than the A7(r)... Why? The Hasselblad logo fits much better on the 'pentaprism' than the Sony logo which looks 'lost' on it. The wooden handgrip also looks the part. For max $500 extra I would prefer it over the Sony... for 10.000? FOOLS ONLY!

Lol.....I see from all the negative comments here, that the commentators are not Hasselblad users.

Hasselblad equipment is for professional photographers, and therefore not mass produced and therefore costs more.

For those here, whose limit is taking pictures of the local cat....then a Hasselblad is definitely not for u, regardless of how much money u have.

In my film days I used to use Hasselblads and 645 Contax cameras all the time...they had their faults, but they were top of the range, and worth every penny.

Today (for what I do) a good digital SLR is more than adequate.
So to all cat photographers here....dont knock it just because u can't afford it.

Regards

There's a huge difference between a Hasselblad which is $10k because it is genuinely a specialists' tool of higher quality than consumer cameras which is produced by hand, and a "Hasselblad" which is actually just a Sony that costs 1/3rd as much but with some different badges and an ugly wooden handle pressed on. The latter is ridiculous.

That's not even a good Photoshop job. The grip is really fake looking and the LOGO should have been softened so it doesn't look like it is standing off the body. and there would be a little perspective in the text. The letters are all the same size.

It's probably a photoshop fake, otherwise the logo would read "Hr", LOL.

But the A7r is a much better candidate than NEX7 as a high-price luxury gadget. So this will probably become a reality soon.

Yes, it's photoshop, but, to be fair, Photoshop is the primary CAD tool that Hassie's design team relies upon nowadays.

Congratulations to Hustle Blood for being the outright winner of the prestigious "Self Imploding Brand" category.

But they did it.

What has happened Hasselblad's no nonsense approach to QUALITY. Their web site is now pushing the Luxury of their offerings, what ever the heck that means to any particular photographer . . . Putting Luxury in your pocket means WHAT?

It sounds' pretty nutty, but as long as there are people with too much money burning a hole in their pockets, you will see products like this.

Hasselblad is just cashing in on the uber-rich's need to have things no one else can afford.

I give it around an 80% chance that this pimped out A7 will eventually appear.

The official announcement images of the Lunar looked every bit as bad as this. They were poorly cobbled illustrations and not product photos. That said, I don't think there's enough glitzy garbage added to this to really fit the new Hasselblad design aesthetic. Shouldn't it at least be iPhone gold?

Going by the Lunar and Stellar, this fake picture looks much better than the real Hasselblad version will look like when they get round to releasing it.

Some reports say the A7 has a loud shutter - so perhaps it will sound like a real Hasselblad.

What Sony should do is release this camera first as premium and milk the status conscious rich than release the A7. this is what Toyota does with Lexus.

It is a pretty obvious fake though and a poor one at that.

It's bad enough Leica use Panasonic cameras and stick a Red Dot on them and therefore charge 50% more than the Panasonic equivalent. Hasselblad are just literally taking the Mick. Sorry but you really would have to be insane to buy any of their Sony clones. No matter how beautiful they make those special grips look!!!!!

I know -- how about we replace the news section with a twitter feed from photorumors.

Weird that a lot of your readers have higher expectations of this site than some of the staff.

It sounds like a hoax coming as it does on the heels of the Sony, but being a watch guy, I can tell you that even brands like Rolex put up pictures of their watches that have been cobbled together in Photoshop.

Your average consumer would never be able to tell, but we who collect watches and discuss these matters daily can with very little trouble spot the occasional mixing of features, such as fonts or wording and even mismatched dials and the like.

So, for a group of photo enthusiasts to see the discrepancies in this camera is not really proof that no such model is in the pipeline.

Personally, I don't know enough about Hasselblad to know, but in the world of advertising Photoshop and CGI are a reality and it's not always done that well.
