Another Hasselblad rebadge or Photoshopped hoax?

By dpreview staff on Oct 17, 2013 at 18:24 GMT

Various rumor sites are today reporting Hasselblad is poised to release a $10,000 camera called the 'Hasselblad Solar,' a rebadge of the Sony A7 that was announced just yesterday. Some even report it as if it's a real product. Even just a cursory glance at the image suggests it's a quick Photoshop job to add a wood grip and lighten the tint of the body. The serial number on the lens suspiciously matches the product shots Sony released yesterday as well.

What do you think?

Reporting rumors is fun, nothing wrong with it.
I just would like to see them report on rumors that people actually care about.

Me thinks they did this one a little tongue n cheek...

Severely disappointed by DPReview for posting this crap. Why are you playing catch up games with Engadget? Who gives a damn if those guys are wrong?

Seriously guys, please go back to being a great site you once were...

Have a sense of humor. This is (probably) a pretty clever sendup of a real trend in Hasselblad's business model. It's also a hoax. When we first saw the Lunar, we thought it too was a hoax. After a long week of posting comprehensive reports on real products, I think the evidence we're still quite serious about what we do is overwhelming. I think it's important for us to occasionally point out stuff like this: fake product reported as real; that it's also good satire is a bonus.

@Davidg72 chill out captain anal.
Rumors are fun, harmless. if you don't like em don't read em.
Lots of us do like them. Besides, most of em actually materialize.

Keep doing it dpr. I like it. I think there's better rumors than this, bu it's good for a chuckle.

Hey! I'm earlier! See http://www.dpreview.com/news/2013/07/22/Hasselblad-announces-Stellar-Sony-RX100-based-20mp-compact?comments=5

"Now we've got Lunar and Stellar, I bet that we'll see a Hasselblad Solar in the foreseeable future. Possible candidates are:

1. The DSLR/DSLT mentioned in the partnership last September; possibly a rebranded A99.

2. RX1, once an interchangeable lens successor is available.

Thoughts?"

On the one hand--this is silly and shouldn't be taken seriously. On the other hand, the Hasselblad Lunar (which is a real product) is just as silly. Do I think this photo shows a real camera? No. Do I think Hasselblad might actually rebrand the Sony a7 and sell it for 50x more than the Sony-branded version? Yes, that's completely plausible.

This particular photo is definitely fake: Look how much lower the "H" in "Hasselblad" is, compared to the "d" at the end of the word. The geometry is wrong. The text that's supposed to be engraved/printed on the viewfinder hump is on a different plane than the actual camera.

Well spotted, leschnyhan. And rotating slowly clockwise (looking from the camera's left) too.

We don't think this is a rumor. We think it is a hoax. Other sites are reporting it as news. Hence our suggestion that it is not real. Case in point: http://www.engadget.com/2013/10/17/hasselblad-sony-a-7-solar-rebadge/

While quite an obvious fake, you are still trying to play the ball and incite some answers.
Why not open a discussion about the trend of rumors, hoaxes and fake stuff out there ?
How about trying to figure out who threw this junk out there.
How about not perpetuating spam ?

The real deal would have a titanium finish to go with the Stellar.

Also, whoever did this didn't account for the forward leaning part of the "prism" when writing Hasselblad on the surface; the letters are as if printed vertically.

Call it perspective. Other sites are reporting it as actual news of an actual product. We thought we'd point out it looks pretty fake at this point. That doesn't mean Hassy won't produce it.

As for "used to be," please see our comprehensive first impressions reviews posted on the Sony A7, A7R, RX10, Panasonic GM1, Nikon D5300, several lenses, our 70D AF report; need I go on?

So "other sites" report it as news so that means DPR takes the low road as well? What's next? "Bigfoot seen shooting a D400!"?

Your "comprehensive impressions" are frequently buried by the latest "pro shoots iPhone" rubbish along with trash articles like this.

There is still good content here, but more and more frequently you have to dig through the trash to find it.

We didn't take the low road, we've pointed out just a few reasons it's probably fake. Overlaying the image on the Sony A7 announcement image confirms it without a doubt as the starting image.

And if you get any more information on that Bigfoot D400 story, please PM me as soon as possible. That guy always gets the good stuff first.
