Just Posted: Pentax MX-1 hands-on preview

By dpreview staff on Jan 7, 2013 at 14:00 GMT

Just Posted: Our hands-on preview of the Pentax MX-1. The enthusiast sector has become so vibrant that our pre-Christmas roundup included nine cameras. Not wanting to be left out of the action, Pentax-Ricoh has launched its own 12MP camera with a 1/1.7" sensor - the MX-1. As well as a slightly familiar-looking 28-112mm equivalent, F1.8-2.5 zoom lens, the MX-1 takes the unusual step of including brass top- and base-plates - meaning its classic looks should become even more pronounced as it ages.

The camera the same lens, the same sensor and the same screen as the Olympus ZX-2. Probably these cameras were made by the same manufacturer.

I just compared those two cameras and the similarities are so similar that I think you are correct, they are made by the same camera manufacturer. Good catch!

It's almost certainly the same sensor/lens module (as we say repeatedly in our preview). It's not the same screen - the Olympus one is touch-sensitive. It could be made by the same manufacturer but it's not certain.

Keep the brass and add a hotshoe. I will second or third whoever said that the K-01 should have looked like this.

shutter speed 1/8000 against 1/2000 for the ZX2.
Nice.

This should of been the look of the k0-1. Give it a a hotshoe, interchangeable lens, and at least an ap-c sensor. Pentax's pancake lens would look so good on that body!

Something about grandmothers and sucking eggs -

The hands-on dimensions you give with lens extended is of very limited value to the reader. However, the thickness with lens retracted (plus any removable lens cover) would be quite useful in determining how pocketable this might be.

A missed opportunity. I am a Pentax fan, but how does this camera differentiate itself from competitors?
