Pentax Japan offers colorful special edition 'Evangelion' Q10

By dpreview staff on Jan 28, 2013 at 22:34 GMT

Pentax has released a three multi-colored variants of its Q10 small-sensor mirrorless camera for the Japanese market. The color scheme is based on characters from the country's popular science-fiction franchise Neon Genesis Evangelion. Apart from the cosmetic changes, there are no specification differences in these editions compared to the original Q10, which offers a 12.4MP 1/2.3" back-lit CMOS sensor, giving a roughly 5.5x crop factor, meaning a 28mm lens will give a 154mm equivalent field of view.

The special editions will be produced in a limited run of 1500, but it is unclear whether this is the total production per variant, or whether a run of 500 will be produced for each individual model. Price has yet to be confirmed.

This is the special edition 'Shinji Ikari' Q10. In Neon Genesis Evangelion, Shinji is a young boy who pilots a robot called Evangelion Unit 01, which he uses to protect the city of Tokyo-3 from creatures called Angels, who want to destroy mankind. And you thought it was just a camera...
This is the 'Rei Ayanami' edition. In Neon Genesis Evangelion, Rei is the pilot of Evaluation Unit 00. This K-10 pays tribute to Asuka Langley Soryu, who pilots Evangelion Unit-02. According to our exhaustive research, Asuka is 'a girl who seeks to put herself above all others'. So now you know.

It has too much black left on it, and especially the lens.

Don't be too quick to judge Pentax for having a keen understanding the Japanese youth market.

A couple of years ago everyone was dumping on Pentax for coming out with different colour schemes. If you look at the latest offerings on DPreview from Olympus, Nikon and Sony, they come in all sorts of colours as well now.

Not sure why you'd think so, black is so conservative and boring after awhile. There is nothing wrong with having a little fun with color. I've seen all kinds of custom mods done to Pentax DSLRs like Kai from DigitalRev does, and find them kind of interesting.

While I prefer the original magnesium alloy Q, I think these look kind of cool.

Yes. Unless (we) Americans who would *never* import tacky, plastic stuff. I occasionally wonder what the poor factory workers in third world countries think about all the useless garbage they make for our consumption.

From all the commentators, how many have seen the anime ?

Just to show you how it relates to the anime : http://evangelion.fateback.com/pic-eva-11.jpg

The three "robots" are called "Evas" and it is one of the most know anime in the world so ... I wouldn't be surprised if they were sold pretty quickly !

Attention DPReview forum prowlers: these are for fans of a popular Japanese anime series. Many of them love collectibles, so this is purely a merchandising ploy. These are not for you! So take a deep breath, and enjoy your large, black cameras and retro Leica wannabes (and your genuine Leicas too!).

Yuck

Is the idea to make the camera as ugly as possible so no one will want to steal it?

I guess, I am a basic black guy.

Hi Craig and, yep, having had photo equipment stolen on two different occasions, that though has certainly crossed my mind, LOL.

This is just good old Pentax being Pentax. They have always been known for quirkiness. We should be glad there are companies still willing to push the boundaries instead of bringing out another "me too" product.

This is the perfect camera for street photography. I cannot imagine that anybody would complain if you take a photo with these “tools”.

Also Leica does this but less consequently:

So this is what we get when we infused anime into cameras ... well at least they picked a high profile series, lol If they release one for the Dragon Ball Z series and power up ... imagine the infinite possibilities!

People were joking about the Pentax Q and saying that it looked like a toy. Well.... instead of making it look more serious they made it look exactly like a toy. Especially the orange one :-))))

OMG! Cameras need to look serious, because photographs are serious business. They must all be black and look alike! Nobody should ever do anything different. Now fall in line Pentax.
