We've just posted a gallery of real-world samples from the new Nikon 1 V2, with its bundled kit zoom, the 1 NIKKOR VR 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6. The V2 is a significantly different camera from its predecessor, offering much more enthusiast-friendly ergonomics and a new 14MP sensor, among other refinements. As well as 25 JPEG images we've also included four Raw conversions, to give a better idea of the camera's potential.

There are 29 images in the samples gallery. Please do not reproduce any of these images on a website or any newsletter / magazine without prior permission (see our copyright page). We make the originals available for private users to download to their own machines for personal examination or printing (in conjunction with this review), we do so in good faith, please don't abuse it.

Unless otherwise noted images taken with no particular settings at full resolution. A reduced size image (within 1024 x 1024 bounds) is provided to be more easily viewed in your browser. As always the original untouched image is available by clicking on this reduced image.

I have lots and lots of photos I love from a V1 I had. Sure it has its limitations, but it has its uses too.

I think the Nikon faithful are spoiled rotten. They expect every Nikon to deliver D800 type IQ.

These samples aren't bad, coming from a much lower priced P&S type camera with a smallish sensor.

I'll take it over a cameraphone 100% of the time.

I agree, other than the price comment. The V1 and J1 are heavily discounted and represent a remarkable value. However, at full MSRP, the V2 is the same price as a Nikon D5200 or Canon T4i or several other full featured APS-C or 4/3 cameras. So in that regard, the samples are pretty bad.

You're right about the price.

Look at the Amazon prices listed right kiafter the article. V2 kit...$850. V1 kit.... $350. There is no way on earth that the upgrade is worth an extra $500.

At $850 your are within spitting distance of all those cameras you mentioned, plus the Pentax K30. All of which are a LOT MORE camera than a Nikon 1 V2.

Wait six months, and the V2 will be under $400, where it belongs. Then... it becomes a good value.

I've said it before and I'll say it 1000 times.

The Nikon 1 series make me sad.

In all Nikon history, I have never seen such a let-down. These are cameras that are solely meant for the fashion fans. It may be selling quite well, but it is a shameful blot on the Nikon brand.

Nikon: please reconsider. Give us a commpetitive mirrorless system, not a bling accessory.

Yeah, like the coolpix series is a gem. Or that P7000 I tried out. It's just marketing, and if this kind of product needs to be put on the market, so it can sell millions and fund the next generation of full-frame cameras, then bring it on !

Its kind of baffling to see this before a proper 6d review. There is no excitement around the nikon j cameras. The 6d, in comparison, has a shiz-ton of people- myself included- that are on the fence and looking for a thorough review as to whether to purchase or not. There's just nothing much to the camera to have the review not drop already- IMHO, anyways. Its almost literally a 60d with a full frame sensor +gps+wifi

With the 7d2, and other canon bodies slated to be announced in the near future, the 6d review cant come soon enough. :)

PS/sidenote- ive handled this camera at BH- and it feels great. I think i need to be just pushed over the edge. The outer focus points worked pretty well too.

well , you really think it´s the same person or only one person doing all the reviews?,
as far as i know the reviews are assigned to different people and according to the availability of cameras. and a 6D will definitely take much more time and effort than this silly cam from nikon.

by your own admission 6D is literally a 60D with full frame, now there you have it. read the 60 d Review,and look at the `6D´comparisson page and you have it.
it´s a great camera with IQ to match 5D3, what more do you want i wonder!!

Most review sites, whether they review cameras, video games, CDs, books or whatever, get review samples sent to them by the manufacturers/publishers. They don't actually go out and buy (or rent) them themselves.
In a comment to the "Best camera of 2012" poll, Barney from DPR said that the 6D weren't included in the list, because they hadn't had the time to test it thoroughly, having just received a production sample from Canon.

now that´ll be the best innovation from nikon since the original D3.
or atleast a digi back with d600 sensor which can be used on old nikons.they have patented such a back recently, who knows what 2013 brings.;-)

The FF sensor alone would cost 1000. The limited production run and the special requests for it would probably take it closer to 10.000 than 1000.

Go buy an Olympus OMD EMD EM DM5, or a Fuji XPro 1.

Actually I could really do with a camera like this. I want (in fact I need) a camera which is small enough to travel (and not carry my Canon 50D plus lenses). It needs to operate fast, focus well, have inbuilt flash, have viewfinder, be compact, have decent resolution, do decent video and have manual function when needed. About the only thing the V2 misses out on for me is being able to put a wireless flash trigger on top so it can be a backup to my 50D for studio flash work. But as a responsive, capable, all-in-one travel camera it's just what I need.
An SLR is not always the right answer, sometimes I just want to get the travel snaps and spend the rest of the holiday relaxing - I just don't like doing it with a compact because there are TOO many compromises.

People take this camera too seriously
This is not a poor mans Leica its a soccer mom cam.
If you want a silk purse from sows ear then go to M 4/3rds or Fuji X__?
Can an artist brush with this to create art? Yes.
Is the sensor/body size ratio off? Yes.
Are the lenses too big? Yes.
Is this a serious camera? No.
Go out and make art and capture moments..

Whilst Im glad this camera system exists I wont be buying one yet- the chip is still too noisy for me.

I reallly just want a silent Nikon FF body with no SLR viewfinder or mirror that can take all my FF glass, without the (audible) noise of a FF DSLR. It can be same size as a Nikon FM.

Anyone else want one?

Not crazy about the soft jpegs that Nikon, Canon and some others seem to like. Panasonic got the message with the LX7. While you do get some noise with the raws, the difference in sharpness is night and day.

I personally can't stand over-sharpened images.

Softer imagery is much more natural.

we are unfortunately seeing oversoftened pics;-). a bit more sharpening will do much good to those photos

btw the real issue is that bayer-pattern and jpg sub-sampling prevents accurate pixel sampling.

For the actual resolution, with a real RGB value at each pixel, shrink the image by half in each axis.

what do you mean by natural imagery?do you really think if you stand there in person and look at those scenes in the samples and it looked that soft through your eyes ,and will still think your eyes are fine ?
i´d be making an appointment with my eye doctor the next morning.
the softness usually comes by means of cheap lenses too,but in this case you can actually see that the lens is really good ,by looking at how much more details and sharpness the raw files has.
(unfortunately with noise too, and i bet noise reduction during the incamera conversion is resulting in those useless softies)

Well unlike the RX100 it has a viewfinder so that has to be a plus. This is a great little camera and I want the world to buy it so that Nikon can scrape a few $$ together and build a replacement D300s.

Thanks for the samples! Nikon 1 is an interesting small system. Eventually an even better sensor, like the one in the the RX-100, will come. Lenses are already added. Nice.

those photos may be average but you see, the point is to show pics of various scenes a normal customer might be interested in taking pics of.
and DPR reviewers are doing a fine job of it, if you want staged shots under perfect lighting then there are enough samples on the manufacturer´s websites.only problem , they only show the best results, not the bad ones.

Are you saying that you want the images to look like washed out Instagram garbage? I won't comment on your ability to compose, but your taste in editing isn't helping support the aesthetic high ground you obviously think you're on.

When I have seen questions about editing associated with other sample galleries, the usual answer is that the images are out of camera jpg. No PP unless they choose to put a processed raw image side by side with an out of camera jpg to show that comparison.

Howard, i was mentioning the subject and composition only when i wrote average.
the rest is camera´s fault.. the soft, mushy, mute coloured files coming out of this camera is CRAP ,i admit and i´ll say this is a waste of nikon´s R&D resource when they already have similar cameras .they should have invested the time in developing the d400 or something similar.

but that´s nikon´s fault.

Ken, I was referring to the OP's gallery of Instagram-style photographs. I agree that these galleries aren't meant to be great works of art....and I'd imagine the people taking the pictures don't get rights to their images. If they are going to take amazing photographs they're better off doing it on their own time and making some money if they're into that kind of thing.

decent?. look at those iso160 landscape jpegs, they look like crap, soft and mushy, i wonder who will want this overpriced (and ugly) camera when the P7700 gives you way better pics at those iso´s.

Why are the only high ISO samples, pictures of other pictures? That is completely misleading. Could you remove those images and replace them with real world high ISO images?

Are you suggesting that the backgrounds in those images are all housed inside a museum? Are those backgrounds not paintings? There is no way that mountain landscape is inside of a museum.

On the other hand it does certainty look like the Nikon noise reduction resembles an oil painting.

I have to agree that these are the most useless sample images I have come across.

Seems like image 0258 is a valid means to determine how well low contrast detail is maintained, or not, at high iso by looking closely at the hair on the mamoth.
