Apple adds support for Olympus E-P5 in latest Raw compatibility update

Apple has released version 4.09 of its Raw Compatibility software for Aperture and iPhoto '11. This update adds support for the Olympus PEN E-P5, and also restores lens correction to the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100. There's an additional fix related to white balance for images from Nikon cameras that have been edited in third party software.

Just a note that this software update is for OSX, not Aperture or iPhoto specifically.

Any supported RAW file can be opened on a Mac just using preview. The RAW support is part of the OS and Aperture and iPhoto just leverage that ability.

As fast as photographic technology progresses, it seems like Apple could produce an Aperture update, half as fast as they do iPhone and iPod updates. Or could it be the fact Apple doesn't see the need for DSLRs any longer (ie the new iPhone), so why make high end programs for its users? By the way, that Apple exec is at the top of my "He's An Ass" list.

It's still a capable tool, but I've given up hope for 4.

Lightroom keeps piling on innovative features and very solid improvements each year. So many, that it's no longer a fair comparison between the two. Didn't used to be the case.

Apple needs to keep the loyalties of the pros and super-enthusiasts.

I think it will probably come around the time of the new iPad, hopefully within a few months.

They are known to be working on a companion iPad App for it (they hired the development job about 18 months ago).

The new 64bit A7 chip in the next iPad along with 64bit iOS 7 will give it the horse power needed for a serious companion App.

It all makes sense.

- Develop the companion App
- Update Aperture for the companion (and other features)
- Release when the performance is available

It all makes sense unless your client base has all moved to LR meanwhile because you would not even admit to them that you were working on Aperture..!

I'm happy with version 3 - except for 1 missing feature: ability to remove lens CA effectively. Currently, I need to use DxO Optics Pro 8 to process images with CA issues, and this is annoying (especially since I can't get the colors that I love in aperture out of Optics Pro).

Why not use the CA adjustment tool to remove CA ?

I'd like the ability to create proper colour profiles like you can in LR.
And the ability to increase the font size in the Inspector. It is so small I almost need a magnifying glass to see it these days.

They could do an Adobe and call it "Aperture CC", dropping the pesky version number and instead just roll out continous updates like they do now...

As much as I like the Aperture, every time I looked for a particular camera support, it wasn't there.

I still have the Aperture 2. But as I just bought a new cam (obviously unsupported by every Aperture version) I'm basically forced to "upgrade" to something else. Probably would try the Adobe's koolaid this time.

I was hoping that the free options would catch-up - at least on the photo organization side of things - but alas still no luck. DigiKam tries, but porting something like KDE to Windows or Mac apparently is exercise is futility. RawTherapee has some fans, but still slow, clunky and crashes occasionally - less then before, mind you, but still.

Aperture is not abandoned. It has had a huge number of updates to release 3, which as 'point' updates means they are free. It seems a small but vocal group want it called '4' so they can pay more money for it. I'm happy with free.

I think I can see (and appreciate) Apple's approach as clear as day. So maybe I'm the smartest person in the world, but there's an abundance of evidence to the contrary on that score, so it's more likely I'm just not as blinkered as some.

PoohBill, I was being ironic. If Apple was planning to abandon Aperture, do you really think they'd bother rolling out new camera updates?

The updates work on iPhoto as well so they don't have to put in any extra work.

The updates are for the OS! You can open RAW in Preview just like any other image file.
Aperture and iPhoto just leverage that ability in a different container.
