Winners of Red Bull Illume 2013 contest announced

By dpreview staff on Sep 1, 2013 at 01:00 GMT

Back in July we highlighted some of the finalists in the 2013 Red Bull Illume action and adventure sports photo competition, and now the winners have been announced in each of the contest's 10 categories. This year's overall winner was Lorenz Holder who also triumphed in the Playground and Experimental categories.

Lorenz Holder: Overall winner and 'Playground' category winner

Lorenz Holder took this shot of snowboarder Xaver Hoffmann by a giant satellite dish in a heavy snowstorm.

Jeroen Nieuwhuis: 'Closeup' category winner

This is the last shot in a series by Jeroen Nieuwhuis, during which he apparently 'almost smashed' his camera.

Scott Serfas: 'Illumination' category winner

This image was captured by Scott Serfas in Alaska, during the making of snowboarding movie 'Art of FLIGHT' towards the end of a month-long shoot.

Morgan Maassen: 'Lifestyle' category winner

Morgan Maassen took this underwater portrait of a group of young surfers in Fiji.

Lorenz Holder: 'Experimental' category winner

This image by Lorenz Holder is a composite of multiple separate exposures, joined together to 'create a totally different, new world that doesn't exist in real life'.

Samo Vidic: 'Wings' category winner

Samo Vidic's winning shot shows Jorge Ferzuli from Mexico diving from a platform during the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series at Lake Vouliagmeni in Athens, Greece in 2011.

Daniel Vojtech: 'New Creativity' category winner

Daniel Vojtech's picture shows former Czech four-cross champion Tomas Slavik, in a deliberately contrived studio environment.

Zakary Noyle: 'Sequence' category winner

For this arresting (sequential) image showing Gabriel Medina performing a backflip in Hawaiian surf, photographer Zakary Noyle decided to pull back to get a wide perspective.

Romina Amato: 'Energy' category winner

Photographer Romina Amato captured this shot from a boat. It shows athlete Todore Spasov at the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series in the Portuguese Azores.

Chris Burkard: 'Spirit' category winner

Chris Burkard captured this shot in Norway. It shows two surfers returning home after a heavy snowstorm put an end to the day's surfing.

Great stuff, all of them.

I particularly like the surfer lifestyle one for originality, and for having the sun in frame too!

Thanks for all the positive comments.

Think positive and shoot RAW when possible.

... I've just read the comments made before mine.

This appears to be the first time ever, in dpreview history, that everybody agrees on the quality of a photographic series, without feeling a need to make snarky and negative comments.

That really says something, I think.

Some brilliant photographs in there. Who would think of taking a low-angle fisheye action shot into the sun (the skateboard shot)!

Thanks for posting these, Dpreview.

I really appreciate that these are actually some great photographs and not just PP-ed stuff (there is quite some PP, but it just underlines the outcome). Thumbs up for Red Bull and their jury and congratulations to winners

Great shots. Every photo has info about the shot and gear used on the site. Interesting stuff.

Compositing always makes me feel they cheated.

I know, I know. Great shots nonetheless.

The only one composited (AFAIK) won in the 'Sequence' category, which seems fair enough.
