Apple RAW compatibility update adds support for Canon 70D and more

Apple has released RAW Compatibility Update version 4.08 for Aperture, iPhoto '11, and Mac OS X in general. This update adds support for the following cameras:

Canon EOS 70D
Fujifilm X-M1
Leica M
Leica M Monochrom
Nikon Coolpix P330
Pentax 645D
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1R
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II

You can download the new software via the System Update feature in Mac OS X, or by using the source link below.

I had the same problem and found a workaround to get things back to 4.07 before the problems began with 4.08

Please review the link below and follow the instructions on the last three posts..

I realize this is not the fix all, however the 4.08 update has been causing many more problems than described here.. This is just to get back one step until Apple fixes the major problem with 4.08..

Hello,
after compatibility Raw update 4.0.8 , my files generated with d800 and imported with ViewNX 2.7.6 were showed as corrupted, instead the files simply copied from the card to a folder were properly showed.

Someone else has the same problem?

The P330 support is useless. It will not correct the barrel distortion at the wide end of the camera. Once files were touched with Nikon's ViewNX2 it will not open it properly any more - strange colours.

That after all the time it took Apple to release a P330 converter.

I love Aperture, it's an intutive and fun workflow, but really if they don't upgrade it soon they're going to force my hand to move to Capture Pro One.

I do not see why upgrading a good, stable software is such a necessity. Never change a winning team ;-) . It is not because Adobe likes to release one new version after the other, that Apple has to do the same. For me, Aperture is working fine, it is still lightyears ahead of the far overpraised LR in many aspects AND delivering better RAW conversions in quite a few cases.

I'm not sure what alternate universe you guys are living in, but in my universe LR is way ahead of Aperture as far as RAW file post processing. Aperture leads the way as far as creating libraries and sharing your files, but definitely lags way behind LR in processing files. Overall I like Aperture, but it badly needs a MAJOR processing update to hold a candle to LR.

And it still doesn't fix the bug with converting Canon G1 X RAW files taken with high ISO. Once the file is imported and first opened, it will turn very dark in a few seconds. It opens up correctly but then turns dark. JPEG files are not affected. Only seems to be an issue with high ISO photos in RAW and only for the G1 X. Oh well, Lightroom is much better for processing nightsky photos anyway so I use it instead.

yes, we are. I was ready to upgrade to ML but "Mavericks" the new OS is due out here real soon.. Apple has told me hold off and upgrade to that instead.

I hope your computer will be compatible with Mavericks...Apple has a history with dropping support for older computers when they release a new OS (my Mac Book is not ML 10.8 compatible, but my iMac is). I will not run different OS'es on my computers.

Have a look at iridient digital. The new version 2.2 of the raw-developer does a pretty good job with the fuji x-trans and sigma foveon-files. If Apple can't do this by themselves, maybe they will buy the little software company, or whatever ...

Why is this news? Of course, every processing program is going to add support for the various formats. All they have to do is download the specs and add it to their code. this is all just advertising,

Shame on you Apple: You are designing in California and the new Mac Pro is assembled in the USA, but the also in California based Foveon Company with its 3XF Raw-Files you doesn't support. Thats not cool. But this have to be the Next Step !!

The "designed California" thing is from a dumb TV ad that Apple is running on US TV. (The ad stupidly ignores all the work that goes into the operating system.)

Foveon is the sensor maker for Sigma cameras, now owned by Sigma, but still based in Silicon Valley. Amazing image quality through ISO 400--though the cameras write too slowly.

Lightroom doesn't support X3F either. Maybe the reason is because X3F is such a minority market not worth the pipeline changes for them?

Lightroom supports some X3Fs — SD14, DP1, maybe a few others — but none of the Merrills.

It is about time Apple released Aperture 4. The current version is old and desperately needs updating. I don't want to shift to LR but unless they shape up, we will soon have no choice.

Proper lens/camera specific profiled based lens correction is included by everyone else and has been for at least 2 years. It MUST be included in Aperture 4 or Aperture is toast. The 3.4 updates have added very little - mainly bug fixes.

We also need - more and newer plug-ins, better stability, quicker processing of edit data, repair/cloning previewed brushes (like Photoshop), better/a more controllable repair (healing) brush, masking/proper selection tools, additive brushes that increase effect with additional brushing, a history window allowing individual edit removals and sequencing edits, improved keyboard shortcuts, option to see a full menu bar in full screen mode, more choice in Preferences, etc.

There could be refinements all over the place, if they could be bothered.

What makes you think they’re not bothering? Of course they are. They just aren’t talking about it. This is how Apple rolls. If you need lens corrections, switch to Capture One or Lightroom, or be patient. These features weren’t in Capture One or Lightroom at one time either, and they’re hardly deal breakers. People managed to take good photos for decades without such things. There is so much that Aperture does well which Lightroom does poorly that you just don’t know how good you have.

I do not see why you need lens databases. The best quality lenses just don't need corrections, even contrary.

But don't forget that modern digital cameras are designed to need lens correction and perform this in camera on Jpegs. RAW processing needs this and why the delay, they should be leading the way not watching others pass them. Oh and how do you know they are anyway?

Modern to need lens correction? Photography has become a feature-rich but optically poor business. Say as it is, a lot of people of my generation will confirm that in the 70's, quite a few of the big ones made indeed more decent glass than they do now. Cheapish, that is the word: what you can't do first time right is to be fixed by algorithms, no matter what the side-effects of this approach are. Sorry, I don't believe in this kind of nonsense, leave it for the LR-fans.

Actually I totally agree with this last comment. But that is how it is now and so lens databases are necessary and Aperture must deal with how things are not how we might like them to be. Most of my photography is actually done on film, using old cameras with prime lenses. Nevertheless I stand by what I've said. Apple seems to have stopped developing its software applications. This can only be a bad thing, because others have not and let's be honest here, most users will have lenses that need algorithms to correct them.

Whenever I've bought a new camera, Apple have usually been pretty quick to add raw support. Aperture hasn't been through a 'new version' update because if it did, users would have to pay. So instead it gets incremental free updates, some quite major. Weirdly, it still does a great job of processing and organising my raw files, and Adobe has only just caught up with offering Photobooks that Aperture's had forever. Aperture ain't broke, so nobody's fixing it.

It annoys me to no end that Apple RAW support is tied to specific camera models. I have a D800 that is well supported everywhere. But when I bought the portable Sony Nex 3N, it was not supported by Apple. It was not directly supported by Adobe Lightroom either. But Lightroom knows how to handle Sony ARW files, so it went ahead opened them and allowed me to edit. Apple's software on the other hand played completely dumb.

This is one of the many things that drove me off the Mac platform.

It think it a bit silly changing a whole platform because you can't open RAW files from your D800. I mean you could have used Abobe's DNG converter and then into LR that way. It must have cost you a whole lot of money when the potential solution was free and at a very minor inconvenience.

Sure if you shoot once a year then it's minor, otherwise it will get really annoying really fast. Also, DNG doesn't change any of the RAW data, so unsupported camera's will stay unsupported, and you can't make a DNG in the first place if Adobe doesn't support it.

Adobe DNG Converter does support the D800. Thus batch converting files which having coffee or sex and then dropping into Aperture. Free and easy.

I suspect Apple is doing this partly on a purpose, and by design — delaying important camera support — because it is in their best interest that as many people as possible use iPhone as the primary snap tool. When camera isn't properly supported, people will be reluctant to utilise it fully and will feel frustration, which they believe is due to camera manufacturer not doing their job (with Apple) properly — not the other way round.

Otherwise, Apple won't be able to brag around iPhone is the most popular "camera" on Flickr.
Adobe, however, is in neutral position re all that hardware wars, and despite their questionable recent Creative Cloud moves, I believe with faster and timely updates they are a far better option for the photographers out there.

I mean, Pentax 645D support coming out after 3 YEARS since camera's been introduced ... Apple, shame on you.

For example, Aperture 3 was introduced in Feb 2010 with bells and whistles, "a vital software for camera enthusiasts and pros". That was 3 years and half years ago.
Same that year, in June 2010, iPhone 4 was introduced.
iPhone 4 shortly became the most popular camera on Flickr, and "coincidentally", since that time, Apple has put Aperture in state of silent and very slow updates and has never been updated to a major new version.

People who are into iPhoneography do not use Aperture (OK, some might, but generally not). Aperture is wasted on the iPhone. It is in Apple's best interests to release a game changing RAW editor and update it to Aperture X, just like they have done with Final Cut Pro X and Logic X. I really hope Aperture is next. The programme has many good features and desperately needs a BIG update. I mean, I use LR as it offers me a quality and tools that Aperture does not have. But, I would really, really like to use Aperture. And I love that icon.

Wow, somebody actually thinks that the iPhone is a competitor for the Pentax 645. I don't know whether that's a compliment for the iPhone or a slap in the face for the Pentax 645. By the way, you do actually know that Apple has beaten Adobe quite some times in being the first to the market to support a certain camera. So there is really no sense at all in your comment.

Where is the E-P5? C'mon, it's (practically) the same darn RAW as an E-M5. The lack of RAW support is killing me! Olympus Viewer has got to be the most cruel joke ever.

On the flip side, I'm enjoying all of my edits on the iPhone with VSCOcam via the handy-dandy wifi.
