Panasonic releases firmware updates for Lumix GH3 and G5

Panasonic has released firmware updates for its Lumix DMC-GH3 and DMC-G5 mirrorless cameras. Version 1.2 for the GH3 adds the 'Low light AF' previously seen on the G6 that works down to -3 EV, a 'silent mode' that turns off operational sounds and flash firing, and an 'Exposure Compensation Reset' function'. Meanwhile version 1.1 for the G5 only corrects wording of the Motion Picture menu on cameras sold in PAL broadcast regions (including Europe and Australasia), and therefore isn't required by US owners. I tried to install the new firmware 1.2 in the GH3 body (it is presently 1.1). I have proceeded as usual:
- format the SD card, copy the .bin at the root level
- install a full battery in the body, install the SD card
- turn ON the body and go to play mode.

But I have the message "NO VALID PICTURE TO PLAY" as if the firmware is already installed. Does someone has the same problem?

It happened to me. I found out the file name has to be exact as "GH3__V12.bin" and nothing else will be accepted. If you extracted a couple of times... likely your file name may be "GH3__V12 something.bin" and the camera will not read it. You just need to make sure the file name is the exact GH3__V12.bin then it should work.

This link for the GH3 update did not give any instructions on how to update the firmware of the camera. Anyone fournd a link to the instruction sheet for a uk user?

I guess no focus peaking... Do they want to lure people away from the GH3 so they buy the G6? I don't understand the logic.

I just got the round dot with the word low to appear. It isn't easy to get it to do that but it worked in Manual stills mode. It brightens up the display for a second by presumably decreasing the shutter duration.

The "Exposure Comp Reset" setting in the Tools menu does not work with custom settings. The custom settings will always reset the exposure to whatever it was when the custom setting was saved. I would think that the custom settings should use the new feature instead of ignoring it.

The new "Silent Mode" is under the custom tools setting.

If I dialed in exposure comp in a custom setting, I'd want that to take priority. Did you try creating a new profile with Exp. Comp. Reset enabled? I'd agree that a profile created with the reset enabled should use the feature, but I'd want custom profile compensation to override otherwise.

Silent Mode is a new menu item. I can't find any menu setting for low light mode, even under other AF settings, and the update notice just says: "It becomes easier to focus in a dark environment. When the Low Light AF Function is activated, the focus indication is displayed as [icon is a round dot above the word LOW]. Focusing may take longer than usual."

If there's no menu option to toggle Low Light AF, I presume it's activated automatically?

How do CDAF focus down to -3 EV? Would be impressive if it actually works.

Technically, 'Low light focus' mode slows down the sensor's live view framerate during CDAF in low light, allowing it to collect more light per measurement and therefore get more accurate results. This means that AF can continue to work in lower light, although it necessarily slows down a bit in the process.

mirrorless cameras should be able to perform better in low light than SLRs because in SLRs only about 40% of light is directed to the AF sensor (-1.3 stops).

Nice to read that producer supports also discontinued models. The G5 seems to be a good deal nowadays, for 325 USD it is one of the cheapest EVF cameras.

how can i enable "Low light focus" ?
I cant find it in menus ?

Low light focus mode is activated automatically in low light. All you should find is that in situations where the camera previously failed to focus, it'll now work.
