Good-quality DSLRs and interchangeable lens cameras (ILCs) typically provide plenty of manual controls, comfortable ergonomics, and support a legacy of lenses for years to come. But old or new, getting hold of a quality digital camera still requires you to put down a decent chunk of change. Having read your article, I decided to rate your choice of cameras against the "Camera Sensor Ratings by DxOMark" and then compare your price. If you only consider the sensor then The Pentax K-5 and Nikon D5200 stack up very well.

The Fujifilm X-E1 is not under $900, but is $1199.

Haven't used the NX20, but have owned the E-PL5 and X-Pro1 and IMHO, the Fujifilm X-E1 is the better all around camera. The E-PL5 has very good IQ, but is kind of fiddly to use even in Aperture Priority. And the LCD has black bars left and right because it's a 16:9 screen viewing a 4:3 aspect ratio. It has better IQ than the GX1 listed here, but I prefer the deeper grip/ergonomics of the Panasonic, a very nice camera for the money.

People giving their opinion does not equate to whining. Besides how stone cold boring would these comments be if everybody said "I agree. Great article." ?

As far as people taking images or not, it's a safe assumption that if they are here, they are interested in photography or cameras. Lots of people have empty galleries (even you). That doesn't mean they don't take photos.

Pentax Q/Q10/Q7 are missing here, cose they are, for sure, the funiest ILC system DSLR usability style camera out there at the lowest price. I sincerelly doubt NEX or Pana or Oly funnier/IQ/cheaper than the Q. Nothing yet at all.

Then this is a stupid and biased list, at best
Pic quality and menu usability of NX300 is way beyond that of NEX6
If no EVF is a minus point for NX300, then no universal hotshoe for NEX series is a bigger minus point. After all, have you ever seen a serious camera without a hot shoe? Have you ever seen a serious camera without an o/evf? Yes, FUJI X-M1, Leica X Vario, etc
To be really fair, DPR should conduct a poll here: which is more important, evf or hot shoe?

To me it's more like,
EVF, is for people who's enjoying classic shooting style.
Live View, is for today free and easy shooting style.

Either styles they make great photos, if one know how. :)

@dames: if it were the case, they would have replaced the omdem5 with the epl5, since the epl5 meets the sub$1000 criteria while the omdem5 doesn't. this article is obviously too heavily weighted by a person's personal preferences. another credibility blotch on dpr's record.

I guess some of the prices will vary widely depending on where you are.

I just got a new Nikon D7100 body for $999, and you can get a D7000 body for $799 here in Canada.

Meanwhile, the price of the Lumix GX1 hasn't fallen through the floor here like it has in other places. It's still around $399 for the body only.

EM-5 is $1000 ...this is an under $1000 list. Ok, so its close, but how is a $1000 body with no lens a best ILC or SLR?

Because DPR listed it's MSRP instead. If you bothered to click the link to the Amazon page before commenting, you'll see the body is actually $899. With a kit lens, its $999... so it's under.

Why do so many people speak/comment first before looking for info for themselves?

@flipmac: if they show list prices, that means they also mean the under $1000 limit is placed on list prices, not street prices. they should have put an EPL5 instead, but they didn't want it to have any competition, hence them favoring the omdem5.

The $1149 is with the weather sealed 12-50mm. The 14-42mm (with the $999 kit option) is cheaper and is equivalent to the non-weather sealed kit lens of the other cameras on the list. So the E-M5 with a lens is indeed less than $1000 currently.

I was also figuring out why the E-M5 was in the sub $1000 list and that was the reason I found.

I know Amazon "owns" DPR and one would expect DPR to know the price but actual/street prices do fluctuate and a lot of products are sold via Amazon from various stores, further complicating things. Looking at Amazon right now for example, the GX1 body is $244.99, $5 cheaper than what is listed on the article, and the the kit is currently $439.29, also lower than the article.

@Timmbits: I initially thought DPR "also mean the under $1000 limit is placed on list prices, not street prices" but that's not true as the K-5 and the D7000 all had much higher list price than $1000 but currently have sub $1000 street price currently.

That said, I agree that the E-PL5 probably should've have been listed instead of the E-M5 as it is almost half the price for the same IQ; it is the better option if you don't need the EVF, weather sealing, etc. While I'm at it, I would've put a Samsung NX20 or NX300 than any Canon as well.

I'd like to see a top 10 of the best up-to $500 camera (including lens) for non-photographers to buy to take great pictures in auto-everything mode, judged primarily by image quality of out-of-camera JPEGs. Because I get asked this question a lot by people who don't care about manual controls, viewfinders, or raw processing. (Eg, just want to take good pics of their kids.) What's as good as or better than the E-PM2 (less than $500 at Amazon, and I've seen down to $424)?

I have exactly this situation ! Someone is asking me to recommend a quality compact p&s, and I wonder if they wouldn't be well served by the Nikon J1 or GX1 ( both under 390 ) or the GF5 for about 320.

The question is what you mean by "great picture". My experience is, portraits with blown out highlights are also called "great pictures" by non-photographers (eyes must be in focus though).
For that, any 100$ p&S should suffice.

Exactly. Finding a great camera + kit lens for $1,000 is a non-brainer. That's a LOT of money. But as you suggest makes sense.

Not everyone wants an ILC system camera. Some only want a very compact advanced camera (non ILC) to be extremely light weight and overall small. ILC with certain prime lens gets small. Not so, if adding a zoom even if collapsible kit, which my wife does not want (still not small enough ). For those there is the capable advanced Panasonic LX7, Canon S110, Olympus XZ2, Nikon P7700 plus others. Most of us, who visit these forum like ILC or DSLR and may also own an advanced P&S camera for social events and family.

Sure, that would be useful for much more people than shooting black and white resolution tables with macro lenses in manual mode.

Unfortunately, DPR does not test how well Auto or scene modes work on different cameras, meanwhile, there are a lot of differences there between cameras, more than in sensors (which are almost all the same or close enough) or manual ISOs.
After all, these auto and scene modes (including AWB, face recognition, scene recognition etc) are implemented by hundreds of thousand lines of code unique to each manufacturer.

Sold the A65 for the D7000 which was too expensive a year ago :) The price has droped from 1150€ to 620€ here in france . (cheaper than the A65!)

Of cause these are the writer's choices.

It's apparent he took at least one cam from every important brand. (Did I forget a brand?)

Maybe two canons and two panasonics were taken because many people own those brands.

Today, most new cams are worth their money. I feel happy there is the choice between so much of them. Everybody gets the cam which is made for him / his needs. Of cause, there are different opinions, what is good for someone. You can write your own opinion, but don't blame the writer for his choice, please. Don't take the world so serious. Photography is just a hobby for most of us, no need to make yourself miserable with it.

If you have invested in glass from one brand, you have to choose your next cam from the same supplier; like it or not - so the fact, there is one cam chosen from each brand was a good decision.

If you really see a very good cam and you are not convinced with your system (me canon-owner thinks of 18MPIX APS-C) just switch :-)

Panasonic is pretty far down in sales, well below Nikon and Sony. Given that the different brands offer various features and have varying strengths, spreading around the attention does make some sense. Cameras have reached such a high degree of competence that I'd have a hard time coming up with ten bad cameras. Value strikes me as what varies the most, with some cameras seeming overpriced compared to others.

These are the article writer's choices, and possibly based also on dpreviews reviews overall to date. However, my vote for "best bang for the buck", would be EPL5 which for nearly HALF the price of the OMD delivers virtually equal image quality in most lighting, and enough controls to satisfy a lot of people (also it is bit more compact body than OMD in size).

For an OMD you get more features and worth it to many, but not everyone needs these extras, as the EPL5 is very capable anyway! And it is lens choices that make the difference.

Both cams do complement each other.
- The OMD is for people who like to peep through a viewfinder
- The EPL5 is for people who like lcd screens.

The EPL5 could be best for your money.

And the E-PM2 offers the same image quality and access to the same lenses for even less. They're all differentiated by features. You decide how much the fancy IS and build quality are worth (to get you to the E-P5), and then the evf.

As long as the photography system (brand) has the lenses you want and need the number of lenses total is a moot point. That said Pentax is the system I have, which include M42 lenses from the film era, and the lenses available in their lineup will do nicely for me.

The Pentax K-5 is a bargin and can still be found new. I'm going to spend a little more and go for the K-5II however.

Just because a system has the lenses you want and need today, that's no indication that it has the lenses you may want and need tomorrow.

I'm not saying you should always go with the system which has the most lenses. I'm saying that the more lenses a system has available, the more comfortable one feels locking oneself into that system for the foreseeable future, all other things being equal.

Well, if you are looking at sub-$1000 cameras and the only lenses system A has which system B does not cost $13,000 and up, you are pretty safe to assume you would not want to buy them tomorrow. :)
And you pretty safe to assume nobody in their right mind uses a Rebel with those. ;)

The EOS 60D is made of plastic, but I like it. I mostly bought it because of my earlier investment into canon glass. But it's reliable despite the plastic and the "wibble-wobble" lcd-screen. I often switch off the screen, turn it to inside (just now and then checking the histogram) and forget about reviewing the pictures. The battery standing time is very long.

I think the 60D is the camera that does not fit into this list at all. I am a Pentaxian fanboy through and through, but I say this in the most objective way possible:

The best value for money DSLR's/MILC's under $1000 are the Pentax K-500 ($595 w/ 18-55 kit lens), Pentax K-50 ($696 body or $776 w/ Weather Resistant kit lens), Pentax K-5 ($500 used body - discontinued), with the number one spot for "best bang for your buck" across the photographic world given to the Pentax K-30 ($479 body) and the Pentax K-01 ($299 w/ 40mm pancake lens) despite what is undeniably a controversial body design for DSLR/Mirrorless, respectively.

Even the lowest entry level isn't skipped over for $1000+ features such as 100% penta PRISM viewfinders and DUAL command dials.

Anyone that tells you otherwise is delusional.

Hands down best photo tool for the money (maybe ever).

I do realize that all opinions are equal, but the numbers and IQ don't lie. $314. Great performance/IQ.

Pentax mid-range DSLR bodies are great values, but there is little reason to prefer the K-500 / K-50 over the K-30 as they are virtually the same camera with different cases.

There are problems: Pentax lenses have gotten extremely expensive and much of the lineup is outdated with no SDM. DA* primes, older screw-driver AF zooms, f2.8 zooms, and the macros have all been priced through the roof.

The second problem is less for stills only shooters: Pentax DSLRs have not kept pace with the other big three regarding video.

So I'd say the D7000 at it's current price (or even refurbished for $719), offers about the best value price/performance wise for a crop sensor DSLRs. Nikon's lens lineup is a larger with inexpensive primes like the 35 1.8 and 50 1.8 (with metal mounts and lenshoods vs the plastic DA 35 2.4 and 50 1.8) , and lots of zooms with fast, silent AF. And F-mount is better supported by 3rd party vendors.

The value of the overall system matters more than one body.

IMO, the K5II/K5IIs is the best APS-C body out there for the money. The only thing giving me pause is, as marike6 said, the lens lineup.

.....and some of the Pentax kit lenses like the 55-300 and old FA film lenses like the 28-105 work fine and deliver outstanding IQ for $$$. That's information that non Pentaxian's have no idea about.

I grew up shooting Pentax, so I am well-aware of the old FA film lenses. Unfortunately, they don't really jibe with what would be the whole point of me getting a K5IIs - AF speed and flexibility. Basically, I'm considering a K5IIs for those situations where my X-Pro1 would falter.

Voila! What's nice is that Pentax doesn't cripple lower-end bodies, except not having in-camera focus adjustment, I believe. Samsung is the same way. The NX1000 has the same interface capabilities as the higher end models.

Would like to have seen Pentax bring in the K-500 even lower to help build the brand. And why not keep the K-30 line going a while. Pentax needed more models and this is a step in the right direction.

@Gesture: of course Pentax does have AF microadjustment in-camera, even the lowest models like the K-r had it. Now compare to entry-level DSLRs of C/N.

Also to consider that K mount will take those M42's with adapters, but F mount can't due to register depth. I use the old lenses on the EM5- but had I gotten a Pentax, I would have had a larger and better sensor ... I can't adapt (without gimics) the M42's to the D90 I have.

Feature for feature (especially the performance of the sensor), the Pentax k series is currently the best value in DSLRs.

k-5 = $680, and the list of features did not include the all metal body and weather sealing.

OTOH, Pentax flash capability sucks.

Ive got a Sony A65, and im very happy with it. (and i use it for professional work).

Would i ever go back to a DSLR ....with its mirror flapping around, nope.

A65 good with videos as well.

Truth is that almost ALL camera at about £600 ($900) are pretty good.
Its simply getting one that suits you needs, and then we can all get on with each other.

as long as they have good wide, a 35, 1 50 and a 75, a zoom, a macro, most people, even enthusiasts, can shoot with any of those.

You don't need 1000 lenses. Just the basic few and most, if not all, of those cameras have them.

If you're a pro with broad needs, it matters, but why would a pro spending the thousands on lenses be buying from this list? He wouldn't, unless the body happened to meet his needs (probably on clearance.) This is a list for enthusiasts with moderate budgets. Most brands offer the handful of basic lenses I'd ever likely own.

That's non-sense. As long as your camera system has the lenses you WANT, are most likely to BUY, and that you can actually AFFORD, then that's what is really best. For example, Canon EOS has the most tilt-shift lenses...but does that really matter to 99% of DSLR buyers who will never use one, let alone buy one?

Your analogy makes as much sense as flamingos in the arctic. I have no idea what you are trying to say. DSLR is too broad of a group, everything from the go-kart to a formula one falls in the DSLR category, and the same could be said for mirrorless, but both are interchangeable lens.

You sound totally ignorant and I forgive you. My gh3 and omd can run rings around any dslr up to pro level and doesn't suffer from back or forward focussing issues. Immediate live view without lag.

Agree that audijam is talking nonsense. The GH3 and OMD are terrific for mostly static subjects.

But rings around any DSLR except pro-level? That's pure fantasy considering that the D7100 is probably best performing crop sensor camera currently made.

The SLR is fundamentally using technology that is 70+ years old. It's practically ancient technology. That flapping, mechanical reflex mirror is not the end-all and be-all of photographic technology. In fact, it's become quite dated, like comparing a CRT monitor or tube television to an LCD monitor or flatscreen plasma television. It results in cameras that are overly large and thick. For some applications and some users, it's great. But it's not necessarily the best system for everyone and all applications. I'm a lifelong SLR user, but I also use a mirrorless camera system which delivers similar results at a fraction of the size and weight of a conventional DSLR system. Newer technology has brought about a smaller, lighter, easier-to-carry form factor that I enjoy using more than my DSLR system now.

The K-30 is newer than many of the cameras on this list, and its replacement isn't even available yet. Perhaps 2 months later it would have made the cut.

Besides, every other camera (except the 60D) deserves to be here, so which ones would you remove?

Exactly, the K-30 is definitely worth considering and outperforms many DSLRs in this list, either in performance or in price. Itś got the same acclaimed sensor as the K-5 and D7000, but with newer features like focus peaking, all in a body costing 400 pounds/500 eur (I bought mine for 380 GBP). Actually I cannot think of any other DSLR with such great performance/price ratio.

The isn't one. Don't forget the pro-level weather sealing, dual command dials, 100% penta PRISM viewfinder, AA battery compatibility, and 6fps in a package that is smaller than any DSLR listed above with color options too if that suits your fancy.

Say what? The 60D is better camera than the GX1, G6 and T4i. Prosumer magnesium alloy body with a top panel and similar video features to the 7D. Not to mention EF mount. The GX1 is a good camera, it's not at the level of a 60D.

I've compared them side by side. My doors are still on. The K01 is a good camera, but the M's IQ is a bit better. And now that the AF is improved I couldn't be happier.

I'm a *very* satisfied K-30 and K-01 owner, and getting both for under $1k feels like a steal. But let's be honest: there are LOTS of great cameras out there to choose from, and ultimately personal taste becomes the deciding factor.
