Fujifilm has announced a set of firmware updates for its X-Pro1 and X-E1 mirrorless cameras. Versions 2.05 for the X-Pro1 and 1.06 for the X-E1 are available to download now; they offer compatibility with lenses that don't have aperture rings, and allow easier focus area selection when shooting with the eye-level viewfinder. The company has also pre-announced further updates (Versions 3.00 for the X-Pro1, and 2.00 for the X-E1) which promise to improve autofocus speed with existing XF lenses, and add the much-requested 'focus peaking' function to aid manual focus. These are due to be available for download on 23rd July.

Press release:

FUJIFILM announces X-Pro1 and X-E1 firmware updates to offer faster AF and the addition of a “Focus Peak Highlight” function

The upgrades will provide improved AF performance for all FUJINON XF lenses and, amongst other benefits, will add a ‘Focus Peak Highlight’ function for manual focusing.

FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Shigehiro Nakajima) today announces the release of two new firmware updates for the FUJIFILM X-Pro1 and X-E1 compact system cameras, one on 25thJune and a further one on 23rd July.

25th June firmware update:

FUJIFILM X-Pro1 Ver.2.05, FUJIFILM X-E1 Ver.1.06

1.  Additional functionality to improve “one-handed” camera operation

  • A ‘Focus Frame Selection’ option has been added to the ‘Fn’ (function) button.
This offers easier/quicker operation when setting the Focus Frame Selection using only your right hand.
  • A second ‘Fn’ button can be allocated.
This enables you to allocate a function to the selector “down” button. The default setting is ‘Focus Frame Selection’ but this can be changed to whatever suits your shooting style.

2.  Enable aperture control for lenses without aperture rings (XF27mmF2.8 / XC16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OIS)

If you are using either of these lenses which do not feature aperture ring, this firmware update allows you to adjust the aperture setting by using the command dial.

23rd July firmware update:

FUJIFILM X-Pro1 Ver.3.00, FUJIFILM X-E1 Ver.2.00

1.  Improvement of AF speed. Improves AF speed on all existing XF lenses, thanks to the updated algorithm throughout the full range of focal length. Lenses covered:

  • XF14mm F2.8 R
  • XF18mmF2 R
  • XF35mmF1.4 R
  • XF60mmF2.4 R Macro
  • XF18-55mmF2.8-4 R LM OIS

NOTES:

The AF Speed on the XF55-200mmF3.5-4.8 R MS OIS lens has been already optimised.
For all lenses other than the XF55-200mmF3.5-4.8 R MS OIS, the firmware for each lens must be also updated.

2.  ‘Focus Peak Highlight’ function for manual focusing

A ‘Focus Peak Highlight’ function, which features on the X100S and X20 cameras, can be added via this firmware update. It assists accurate and sensitive manual focusing by enhancing the outline of your subject in high contrast.

3. Improvement in ‘Checking Focus’ operation: how to change magnification ratio in manual focusing

The process to check focus by selecting manual focus magnification has improved. Just press and rotate the dial right or left and the camera will alternate magnification between 3x and then 10x , whichever way you continue to turn it.

I owned Nikon D7000 before I purchased Fujifilm X-Pro 1 after serious comparison with Olym OM-D. Fortunately I ended up with Fujifilm. While using Nikon, never Nikon release any update what so ever. And Fujifilm releases update which indeed useful every quarter I think...The customer experience is second maybe only to Apple I believe. And with X-Pro 1 IQ if so wonderful...Bravo Fujifilm!

Product support? Actual improvements in a free firmware update? Good lord, what is this world coming to?

Would like a fourth view mode or custom menu option to set the EVF timeout which the eye sensor could turn back on and/or via the shutter half press.

Thanks, another fn button is very useful, anyway the down button was useless in shutter mode, like the rear dial i think.

I can only say that Fuji has made me into a very happy and loyal customer.

If everyone treated customers like this, the whole world would be a better place... Really... How often do you see a company make an excellent product send out FREE improvements to existing owners just because they CAN???

Compare this with Canon putting video chips in cameras and disabling it so they can sell the "new feature" for more money in a different camera.

Fuji is channeling the spirit of Steve Jobs and we are all going to be better off because of it.

Thanks, Fuji

I'd really love the ability to define another key as the magnification button...preferably Fn or the Q button. Still, Fuji is doing great and I can see that I've made the right decision buying an x-e1

At least one company that still thinks of its user base. Thanks, Fujifilm, this camera is the best thing that happened to me in many years of photography. This is the way to get faithful clients, buying your products without looking to the competition.

I had to do a hard refresh of the page by pressing shift+f5 as the firmware v1.05 was cached.
Once I did, v1.06 info and d/l link were displayed.

Welcome updates. I never thought I'd write this but "Face Detection, please!" It's seriously useful. My X10 has it and it works well. Why not the X-Pro1/EX1 etc.

I was waiting for the X-Pro2 to get these features. This sealed the deal. The awkward focus point selecting process was the key feature that stopped me from buying this camera. And focus peaking is exactly what I need for my Summilux and Nokton lenses.

Basically Fuji has turned the X-Pro1 into an X-Pro1s. Great customer service on Fuji's part.

I am still waiting. I have similar requirements. I need as little or no audio noise for performance. I also need easy, quick, manual controls I can work by feel in the dark. When I press the shutter button I need it to take the picture right then and there, no lag, also an optical viewfinder (no lag). I shoot mostly dance. I am usually a Nikon user (my first was in 1967) so I look for handy-to-me controls.

I have a number of added items when shooting, starting with listening to the music, knowing the choreography (lots of rehearsals), and deciding when to click (without a conscious checklist) on position, technique, expression, meaning within the choreography and so forth.

It is often very dark in the performance area despite lighting (and darker where I am), the subjects move quickly, lighting changes levels, directions and colors often, sometimes by many stops in a bar of music.

Each Fuji that comes out leaves me hoping. Then I find a deal-breaker operating detail (for me).

Just downloaded Version 2.05 for the X-Pro1, and have assigned AF point selection to the Fn button. It's great being able to change AF point selection with one hand! Thank you, Fuji!

I really, really, really hope their future lens releases continue to have Aperture Rings, and that these two lenses only lack because they are "entry level".

Other than that... love that Fuji continues to support their cameras with solid Firmware updates.

I'd say your right in that they don't have it due to being entry level.
Im sure the upcoming fast primes will have it.

Thanks Fuji. That's great news. Focus Peaking for my SLR-Magic 23mm, faster AF, easy movement of the AF-field (waited desperately for that one).
Determining a second FN-Button - wow!
That's all great news and if they just would add a better Auto-Iso implementation I would be in heaven.

But even so, this is great and I highly appreciate the attitude shown by Fuji with these two major FW-updates. Great!

I am very sure that many Leica-guys with legacy glass will now start to think hard what to do, especially the ones who started analog, have Leica-glass, but don't want to invest in a M9 or so.

Thanks and Regards,
Daniel
