Olympus UK serves up free Pancakes with PEN Lite and Mini

Olympus UK is offering a free M. Zuiko Digital 17mm 1:2.8 Pancake lens to anyone who buys a PEN E-PL5 or PEN E-PM2 from an authorised UK stockist. The lens can be claimed though the the company's website, and the promotion runs until 15th September 2013.

New offer gives purchasers of Olympus PEN Lite & Mini a bonus pancake lens

From now until 15 September 2013 Olympus are offering a bonus M.ZUIKO 17mm 1:2.8 Pancake lens* with the purchase of any PEN E-PL5 or E-PM2 body or kit from authorised stockists.

The offer will be promoted throughout the Olympus dealer network, both in-store and online, with artwork provided by Olympus user and street photographer Adam Thirtle. His shot entitled "CCTV" perfectly illustrates the off-the-cuff style achievable with the pancake lens and an eye for a photo opportunity.

The M.ZUIKO 17mm 1:2.8 lens boosts the compactness of PEN cameras to the limit with a mere 22mm in length and 71g in weight. The circular aperture diaphragm with 5 blades enables natural and smooth defocusing. combining cameras that don't sell anymore with a lens that doesn't sell?

(blame it on the epl6 having been released and on the existence of good lenses)

at least they are doing something to help retailers unload dated inventory of cameras (and themselves to get rid of a glut of a high CA lens), contrary to the past, where inventories were saturated with old Olympus 12mp cameras retailers couldn't give away.

I am sure the cameras sell very well, this is a very popular segment in the market (outside of DPR forums) and prices for those cameras in some markets are right (probably not in the UK though).

The CA isn't nearly as bad from this 17 than as from the Panasonic 14... and much easier to fix as well.

Not such a bad deal... Of course there are better lenses in the form of Panasonic 20mm-f/1.7 and Olympus' own 17mm-f/1.8, but you can't argue with 'free'! The pancake is a pretty decent lens that can surprise with the resolution it's capable of. Chromatic aberrations and being prone to flare let its side down - it needs a good editing program to remove CA and a lens hood.

Timmbits, while I would be reluctant to assert this is the finest lens ever made, the truth is I've ordered some 45X30cm prints of pictures taken with the 17mm-f/2.8 and the detail is astonishing. It does an acceptable job for such an unpretentious lens.

Yes, I have hung similar photos from my 17 with my girlfriend's prints from her 20 and framed in a gallery, my photos completely hold up to her's. Personally, I prefer how the 17 flares to the 20 and the wider view. Timmbits, how much experience do you have with the 17? Just curious if you had owned it and it let you down or if you are simply repeating dpreview 17 bashing?

How about extending it to the rest of EU? Or at least Germany??

Also, in Germany, neither E-PL5 nor E-PM2 is available as body only. I'm not sure who's making the marketing decisions over there, but they are not particularly clever.

Ich glaub nicht dass die Deutschen, teknisch wie sie sind, mit so einen Objektiv zufrieden sein würden.

I suspect that the UK business unit has a glut they need to unload. If you can get only the body in Germany, that would it just show how much smarter they are in that business unit. lol ;-)

Sie haben das 17/2.8 ja als Kit mit anderen Kameras auch in Deutschland verkauft.

With other Cameras they sold it as a Kit in Germany allready. Why they don't sell these Cameras without Lens? What is the Point?

The biggest pro I found with the 17mm 2.8 was its size. Thats about it. It was loud to focus, slow to focus and when not in sale the price was a bit high. The Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 or even the 14mm f/2.5 were better choices. The 17mm f/1.8 is arguably the superior of the bunch but is not considered a pancake. If money weren't an option I would get the 20mm 1.7 if I wanted to purchased a pancake lens, if money was an option the 14mm f/2.5 (from ebay) is a great buy.

The 14mm focuses more quietly and much faster than the 20mm, it's really noticeable.....

The 17 focuses faster than the 20. The 14 isn't as nice as the 17 IMO. Here is a comparison of the two:

The 1.8 is superior in every way except for two - it's slightly bigger and it's quite a lot more expensive.

It's probably also losing a lot of sales to the Panny 20/1.7, which is also a pancake.

It is also neither very much better than the kit-zoom nor very much smaller. Nobody nedds it and nobody wants it. I have the Panna 20/1.7, the Oly 17/2.8 and the first Oly 14-42 Kit-Zoom and I never use the Oly-pancake. It was part of a kit of E-P2 with VF-2 I purchased used for a very low price.

Worth mentioning that 17mm, though it loses badly in IQ, has faster AF when compared to 20mm.

The faster (and IIRC relatively quiet) AF is pretty much the only distinctive feature of the Oly's 17mm pancake.

Don't know about "loses badly," but sure, when pixel peeping, I can see the difference. At half the price, I think it competes pretty well though... If I just wanted the "best," I'd get the P/L 25 over either.
