Just Posted: Canon EOS Rebel SL1/100D studio samples and good light samples. We've just got hold of a production version of Canon's miniaturized DSLR and, as part of the process of reviewing it, have shot our standard studio scene. For me, the convenience of the in-camera HDR mode on the 100D gives it a significant advantage over the 550D.

I love my newly acquired Canon EOS 100D, The small and light design combined with a 40mm pancake lens makes the camera really easy to travel with.

The camera is responsive and easy to work with, producing images with great quality in my amateur opinion.

This camera is a joy to use in every respect. A pleasure to hold, the shutter release is just in the right place, I think its destined to be a very popular camera. Its one of those bodies just done right, where everything comes together. Interestingly if you look at comparative tool in DPR and look at RAW and JPEG files from the 100D and the 7D, the 100D files look distinctly better, and they were shot with the same lens. People go about the so-called aging Canon sensor, but just because its an 18MP sensor doesn't mean it hasn't been improved and tweaked over the years. 18MP is a great size...just use the comparative tool and look at the D3200 by way of example..mush and noise. Why change a great sensor that still works fine? Either way this is a great cam, Canon deserves to do well with this. And this from a long-term Nikon user...

There are far too many people out there who like to classify cameras into entry level, professional level etc. From the photographer's point of view, this is irrelevant. We would choose a particular camera for the purpose of our need. Classification of cameras in various levels is purely for market product planning.

I tried the 100D too and found it to be very handy. Never mind the "old" 18 Mp sensor. It is still doing a great job. I think 18 Mp is about the maximum pixels one should have for an APS-C sensor. There is always an optimum level and Canon knows it. What they should improve is probably the live view performance.

As a photographer I use all formats, full frame, APS-C, micro 4/3, compact, 35mm and 120mm positive film. There is no inferior or superior format, just which is most suitable for the job.

One must try the 100D with the manual focus Zeiss lenses. It balance very well and still produce excellent photos.

The beauty is in the simplicity of the combination.

Sold my 550d and got a 100d . So far i am quite impressed with the IQ and the small form factor. Even the kit lens amazes me.

Slightly smaller body, slightly bigger lens. So, basically you decided that the progress made by other companies in the last 4 years is not worth it. :)

The Canon 100D with the new 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 STM kit lens is a good choice. Surprisingly, it is quite sharp with good centre to edge sharpness.

When you are ready, you should try shooting with some prime lenses, say, the new Canon 35mm f/2.0 IS or the much cheaper 50mm f/1.8 MkII with it. You may find the even smaller combo more convenient to carry around.

The best bang at under $1000 is a Pentax K30 or K50. The image quality puts the other two big names to shame. You get a camera that is weather sealed, shots great in raw, low noise etc. I use a DSLR to shot stills not video, if I want a video camera I would buy one.

What an incredible day and age where we can get this kind of performance from a $650 DSLR...Paint me impressed.

Yeah, in every way comparable to the 3.5 years old 550D. What a feat!
edit: sorry, just did the comparison, and actually the 550D was quite a bit less noisy at high ISO.

"Remarkable" is a stretch. The Pentax K30 offers better IQ, plus weather sealing at a lower price point. And from what I'm seeing, the newer Pen models have about the same IQ as the SL1, with arguably better JPEGS. The SL1 offers competitive IQ in a very ugly and cheap-looking body. Why anyone would buy this over a T5i is a mystery to me.

I don't see what advantage this really offers over say a OMD, or NEX-6 since this the lenses on this camera are still going to bigger. While the aforementioned mirrorless cameras maybe around the same size, the offer smaller lenses. Sure, in the case of the Sony the lens selection is a bit lacking(at least in the E-Mount since you can uses adapted A-mount).

Simple. You get an ovf, superior autofocus and the widest range of lenses, flashes and accessories on the market.

But not a good OVF, a pentamirror APS-C OVF. The NEX-6 EVF has that one beat in magnification (1.09x), coverage (100%) and brightness. The jury is still out on FF pentaprism OVFs vs EVFs, but APS-C pentamirrors have had their day.

topic beaten to death. They both have their strengths and weaknesses and serve different taste and purposes. For instance, I prefer the traditional slr feel for a camera and being able to to access my Canon arsenal and I do not care for a slightly bigger form factor. But, hey, I use my Pentax 645D as a walk around body too...

Well, it's good but it's still '3 years old'-good; I could like it but I presume a next generation with a finally upgraded sensor and probably 25% higher cost will make more sense for anyone having a 18-MP DSLR from Canon at this moment. And, IMHO, the pricing of this thing is giving them a much too larger margin - there is no technical reason I can think of to place this in price above a 600D.

In my case (after moving from 550d to a Pentax k30) I can see better detail in shadow recovery as well as in highlights. I believe dynamic range is the most important and visible improvement new sensors bring and Canon has stood still in this aspect for a good while now. They are less and less competitive in apsc area and keep their lead in FF with visibly more research and innovation not yet passed to the lower lines.

Everything - low dynamic range, low color depth, high noise levels at high ISO and even base iso in the shadows... Basically, it is 2009 sensor, all competitors have moved on.

My wife has a Canon 100d with the kit and 40mm pancake lens.
It is impressively small and light and I've found the IQ quite impressive for a low entry level camera. It's definitely a great camera.

As a Pentax pancake user with DA21, 40 and 70, I would agree that 40mm is an awkward focal length. Canon really need a 20 or 25 to compete with the Pentax DA21.

It is not innocent.
In a business that anchors their marketing strategies around such subsidiary things as mega-pixels, the confusing naming is in place to preclude novice buyers from understanding which-is-which and what-is-what, allowing volume sellers to push whatever needs to be pushed at any particular moment.

It is the similar thing with Canon Powershot S100 - the name was already used, 10 years prior! It is like something happened and Canon have lost all their good engineers and product managers circa 2009, and replaced them with "more of the same" types. Simply nothing new and competitive after 7D, nothing. I am not a hater, Canon used to be my favorite photo company. It is just sad. Like they hired an MBA as a manager and quickly run the way of Kodak.

I can see a potential light and small traveling kit with 18-135 STM to replace my 60D with Sigma 17-50/2.8 OS and as a backup camera for my 5D III. It can use all EF lenses in my bag without requiring an adapter.

I agree, I bought one of these for my wife, took it to Philadelphia for a business trip and was very nicely surprised, specially using non-kit lenses. I took this shot handheld using the 50 mm 1.8 http://fineartamerica.com/featured/not-a-semper-agustus-levin-rodriguez.html
This camera is so small and light that I could just tuck it in my suit ... the touch screen is very handy and minimizes navigation with buttons or dials (like my 50D and 6D).
