New firmware from Canon, Nikon, Olympus and Sigma

By dpreview staff on Jun 14, 2013 at 08:30 GMT

Canon, Nikon, Olympus and Sigma have released firmware updates, for the EOS 650D / Rebel T4i, 1 System cameras, Stylus XZ-2 and DP Merrill-series APS-C compacts repectively. The EOS 650D gains several bug fixes, mainly related to the use of STM lenses. Nikon's 1 System cameras have been updated to add support for the new 32mm F1.2 lens and continuous AF with the Nikon mount adapter FT1 and AF-S lenses, among other refinements. The Olympus Stylus XZ-2 has been updated for support with the new VF-4 electronic finder, and Sigma's DP Merrill-series benefit from several performance and stability improvements. Click through for details.

Canon EOS 650D / Rebel T4i Firmware 1.04

Firmware Version 1.0.4 incorporates the following fixes:

1. Fixes the following phenomena which may occur when the camera is used in combination with certain lens models equipped with a stepping motor.

  • Affected lenses: EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM / EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM
  • The camera may freeze in rare instances if you try to shoot with a lens cap attached or meter a subject in low contrast in Live View (or Movie) shooting.
  • Fine focus adjustment may not be possible in Remote Live View on the EOS Utility software.

2. Fixes a phenomenon in which some SD card products are not recognized by the camera.

3. Corrects some misspellings displayed on the menu screen.

Nikon 1 Firmware A:1:30/B:1.30 for 1 J1 and 1 V1

  • Support for AF-C (Continuous AF) focus mode when the Mount Adapter FT1 is used with AF-S lenses has been added. To use this function, the Mount Adapter FT1 firmware must be version 1.10, which supports this function.
  • Support for the 1 NIKKOR 32mm f/1.2, equipped with a focusing ring, has been added.
  • The following changes to playback zoom for images captured in MF (manual focus) focus mode have been applied.
    • 1× magnification has been added.
    • The amount of time allowed to pass before normal display is restored when no operations are performed after playback zoom is applied has been reduced.
  • When shooting in Electronic (Hi) release mode at 10 fps using the Mount Adapter FT1, the shutter speed displayed with a half press of the shutter-release button and that displayed when the shutter-release button was fully pressed differed. This issue has been resolved.

Nikon 1 Firmware A:1:10/B:1:10 for 1 J2, 1 J3, 1 V2 and 1 S1

Olympus Stylus XZ-2 Firmware 1.2

  • Adds support for VF-4 electronic viewfinder (Automatic display switching by the eye sensor is not supported.)
  • Inage processing while shooting with ISO bracketing has been adjusted

Olympus Pen E-PL5 and E-PM2

  • Improved stability of touch panel operation during playback
  • Support for new VF-4 electronic viewfinder (automatic display switching by the VF-4 eye sensor is not supported)

Olympus OM-D E-M5, PEN E-P2, E-P3, E-PL1, E-PL2, E-PL3, E-PM1 and XZ-2

  • Support for new VF-4 electronic viewfinder (Automatic display switching by the VF-4 eye sensor is not supported)

Sigma DP1 Merril, DP2 Merrill and DP3 Merrill, Firmware 1.04, 1.05 and 1.02

  • Improves the stability of operation.
  • Improves the precision of bounce flash shooting when ELECTRONIC FLASH EF-610 DG SUPER SA-STTL and ELECTRONIC FLASH EF-610 DG ST SA-STTL are used.
  • When you enlarge an image, it used to enlarge the center of the image. However, the new firmware magnifies the image depending on the focusing position.
  • It is possible to select the file name of the image either from “SDIM” or “DP1M”.
  • It has integrated the color tones of Custom White Balance (Sunlight, Shade, Overcast, Incandescent, Fluorescent, Flash) among the DP Merrill series.
  • Corrects the phenomenon that the AEL setting goes back to default if the AEL button is set for "Central AEL + AEL", and alternate MF to AF or vice versa, while it is still displaying the operation icon.
  • Corrects the phenomenon that self-timer shooting whilst using P Mode would cancel the program shift for the customized shutter speed and aperture settings if you press the release button.
  • Properly displays the image according to the selected magnification percentage.
  • Corrects the phenomenon that the selected exposure is not appropriately applied when an external flashgun is used with Custom Mode.
  • Corrects the phenomenon that, in rare cases, images are not recorded properly when the battery level is low.
  • Corrects the rare phenomenon that the recording process does not go perfectly when the camera is turned off right after taking the image.
  • It displays the size of the file when you select an image and open the Image Info Screen.

Nikon, Olympus and Sigma: Add support for, adds feature...
Canon: Fixes phenomenon, corrects misspellings...

And the more alarming thing is that the Canon misspellings passed 3 earlier firmwares!

I like the way Canon refers to a bug as "phenomenon".

You forgot Oly firmware update for practically every m43 Oly ever made - again for the same VF-4 compatibility. They really want to sell this excellent viewfinder - even on OM-D. :)

First thing I thought as well. One firmware upgrade not worth risking...

I know some Nikon 1 shooters who will be happy with continuous af with the adapter. The continuous af is a Nikon 1 strength, so being able to use it with longer legacy lens is impressive. There are a lot of other features I would have valued more, but this is a substantial feature for some people and Nikon didn't need to do it. I expect it's something they were working on for the next round of bodies.

I will never buy another Nikon product again. FW updates for the V1 are like clouds that promise rain but are empty. Stupid silly design oversights that bottle neck the camera could have easily been corrected in the FW a long time ago. Nikon SUCKS!

Can you expand on what you mean by "design oversights that bottle neck the camera" ? You are obviously upset. I do not own a 1 series camera but I am considering one.

It is wonderful that Nikon bring c-af for the 1-series + ft1 adapter. This can give the V2 a sales boost.

Last year I sold almost all Canon dslr gear in favor of an Olympus OM-D with Olym/Pana lenses to save weight and keep low profile on the streets while shooting. This works well, but still ran into a bit of trouble shooting sports. Now a V2 with ft1 and a 50/1.4(indoor sports) and the 70-200/2.8 for outdoor sports probably will be able to do the job with only a minimum to carry around.

My clients have no complains switching to mirror-less, the results is what counts.

Well, some companies have good QA in-house, whereas others let the users do most of the testing.

I just want to say thank you for combining these all into one news item instead of flooding the news page with firmware updates.
