Canon EOS 700D / EOS Rebel T5i review updated with lens data

We've updated our review of the Canon EOS 700D / EOS Rebel T5i with lens data and analysis of the camera's EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM kit zoom, as usual tested in partnership with DxOMark. We've also looked at the effectiveness of its IS system and shown an example of its AF performance in video mode. As this lens is about the only change of significance with the EOS 700D release, we thought we'd incorporate our findings directly inside the review for your convenience. The canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 STM is a surprisingly excellent lens for its price. Unlike previous editions, it has quite high resolution, center to edge sharpness,silent, fast and very handy when fitted on a 700D or 100D. Canon has done a good job with this version. Perhaps, the only disadvantage is it has a plastic mount but for a lens this light it may not matter much.

For those interested in a higher quality lens they can go for the latest Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 APS-C lens. It is amazing.

It has very high resolution, superb center to edge sharpness, minimal distortion, low CA, acceptable vignetting and a solid build finishing similar to "L" quality but without the weather seal.

Perhaps, the two downsides are:
1) It weigh 800 gsm so it might be top heavy for the 700D.
2) It flares significantly if you happen to point it at a strong light source. So it will be best suited for low light and diffused light use.

I am a nikon DSLR user, but I never liked the NIkon 18-55 kit lens it looks ugly.. this canon lens looks better, aesthetically of course.. we are not talking about the IQ output etc..

I would not mind using a kit lens if it was this good looking..simple..and balanced looking..

Indeed, the Nikon kit lens looks really ugly.

Along side this Canon kit lens, the new Sony 18-55 DT SAL II looks fantastic, too.

Good - the cameras sold in kits should be first and foremost analyzed with the kit lenses, including test scenes - if more then one kit is sold, with all of them. That is how most buyers will use them.

absurd, they test the camera, not the lens. Dont buy a DSLR if you dont plan to get at least another lens.

I don't, still most people buy kits and use them either exclusively (in most cases), or predominantly. The exceptions, like 1D X and D4, are not sold in kits at all.
Another truth? With those beginners' one-wheel cameras like this Rebel, most people shoot JPG, on Auto. So not testing auto, AWB and all, is just stupid. Testing RAW+Lightroom on default settings is also stupid, you can get anything with a raw converter and Lightroom is not the only program and on a cam like that is used by minority. At most they should have tested RAW conversion of the camera with the RAW converter which is included with the camera, at least in this class.

Regarding "takes time" - they wasting their time enumerating all menu items and testing "resolution" of B&W lines (which nobody shoots in reality) with some rare macro lens when resolution of the sensor is clearly stated in the spec, and with the ubiquitous Bayer filter they all lose about the same. Testing kit lenses and tracking/autofocus speed would be MUCH MORE USEFUL - how hard it is to build a toy railroad, for example, and shoot the moving train in the bursts?

The EOS 700D/Rebel T5i is sold in two different kits: with the 18-55mm STM lens, and the 18-135mm STM lens. The latter was used for the EOS 700D gallery simply because that's the lens Canon supplied to us with the camera.

I've never tried the 18-55 STM, but I do have experience with the 18-135 STM and non-STM on the 60D:

The phase detect focus speed is about the same.
CDAF speed is about 2x faster on the STM, even though this is an older camera.

Manual focus is surprisingly much better on the STM. If you have backbutton focus enabled, then just half-pressing the shutter button activates the focusing. On the STM, the focus travel is perfectly chosen for each focal length, while the physical gearing on the non-STM is too twitchy at the long end and too slow at the wide end.

The STM has a stiffer zoom, while the non-STM has a lovely and delicate zoom feel. However, the non-STM has a crowded wide end, while the STM spreads focal lengths out evenly. The STM has a zoom lock, but it doesn't really need it.

The build quality difference is substantial. The non-STM has a good amount of barrel wobble, while the STM has none. (I was comparing a new STM against an old non-STM, but the non-STM always wobbled)

Commenting on the Article titled "Video Guide: Smartphone vs Digital SLR" since there is no option to comment there.

The video showing the advantages of a DSLR over a Smartphone in real-world use is exactly the type of advertisement the DSLR manufacturers should be running, to inform the "mouth breathing public", I mean customer, of the differences between the two systems. Society is "dumbing down" and you need to re-educate them sometimes.
