Adobe releases Camera Raw 8.1 and DNG Converter 8.1

Adobe has released Camera Raw 8.1 and DNG Converter 8.1, as final versions of updates that were originally posted as 'release candidates'. ACR 8.1 is designed to work with Photoshop CC but, as promised, is also compatible with Photoshop CS6. It brings support for 7 additional cameras, including the Olympus PEN E-P5 and E-PL5, Ricoh GR and Panasonic Lumix DMC-G6, along with profiles for 16 more lens, including Sigma and Zeiss's latest models.

Camera Raw 8.1 and DNG Converter 8.1 Now Available 

Camera Raw 8.1 is now available as a final release through the update mechanism in Photoshop CS6.  This release provides support for HiDPI capable displays, new camera and lens support and address bugs that were introduced in previous versions of Camera Raw.  Customers of previous versions of Photoshop can utilize DNG Converter 8.1 to receive raw file support for newly added cameras.

Photoshop CS6 customers traditionally have received camera updates through Camera Raw 7.x releases.  This is the first time that we are providing camera support through a version of the camera raw plug-in that is a whole version number greater than the version of Camera Raw that shipped with a specific version of Photoshop. (Photoshop CS6 shipped with ACR7 and now we’re providing support to CS6 with ACR8.)  As mentioned here, this change allows us to be consistent with our past policy of providing raw support for currently shipping products.  However, when ACR8 is hosted by Photoshop CS6, it will not offer any of the new features described in Photoshop CC marketing materials for ACR8.

Bugs Corrected in Camera Raw 8.1

• Occasionally the Fill Light adjustment introduced artifacts. This only occurred when processing an image using the PV2010 process version. 
• When using the Red Eye removal tool, setting red eye darken to 100% would lighten the adjustment instead of darkening it.
• Reduced the default amount of sharpening applied to images taken with the Fuji X100s camera.

WHAT A COMPLETE CROCK OF S*$(!!!!

There is no reason that this should be 8.x at all and everyone would expect them to be at 7.x still. So why did they leap ahead? Only because they said they would keep up with CS for a couple of steps while they did their stupid cloud thing that nobody wants, and so when they came out with the latest version of ACR some greedy suits entered a room and someone with way too much power and absolutely no connection to the customers at all stood up and said, "Make it ACR 8 so we can tick that promise off and get back to what WE WANT TO DO instead of what the masses of peons want us to do."

I wonder if it will be possible to fudge/patch ACR8 into thinking it is in CC- and therefore get the new features of it?

Probably can be done.
Somebody needs to make a deep inspection on Adobe's servers to find out where the files are stored.

I think they can even be downloaded directly by deep linking - I only think that there are some legal aspects that do not allow you to do that.

Interesting, the updater said it was installing camera raw 7, when I got done, I checked it in Photoshop, and it is version 8.1.

Mine said both. I think the ver 7 was for Lightroom 4 while the 8 was for CS6.

Yep, downloaded this morning and installed ACR 8.1 and it looks to be the last one, even though they said they would continue to support both cameras and lenses for CS6. It's actually a bit vague here in that is this the final download or the final since the release candidates? Read it a second time and see what you think.

Adobe's use of 'final' here simply means that it's the finalised version of ACR 8.1.

Not so sure about that Andy - We know by now how Adobe likes to give us customers the 'best' experience ever by scr@wing them.

For me it feels like I am taken in my b^tt by Adobe with their new policy. And I don't like it a bit.

So I indeed think too that this is it.
No more updates for CS6 - The final version / The final update.
