I got Nikon V1 and 3 lenses. I got V1 at the bargain price at the end of last year for about $300(with kits lens). Nikon still made some decent money from the lenses that I purchased after I got V1.

Overall, I am very happy with V1 performance for $300. If V2 price drops to this level, I will do the upgrade. Otherwise, I will buy a mirrorless with APS-C sensor for around $500-700. Now actually, Sony NEX-5R with kits lens is about $600. Its AF is not as fast as Nikon 1 system, but for the still pictures it's much better than 1 system in terms of picture quality.

I agree that Nikon didn't price its 1 system appropriately. For its S1/J3 its price should be around high end PS(some high end PS has much better lens than Nikon kits lens). . Its V2 should be priced to the mid-range M43 system, such as G5/G6 or E-PL5.

Is the UK cashback also available for non-UK/Ireland citizens? For example I buy a V2 from Germany via amazon.co.uk? The terms and conditions are not really clear to me.

Many companies are offering summer promotions. The yen has weakened quite a bit this year, but they would rather offer rebates than permanently lower prices. Rebates give more flexibility to raise prices again later.

Good thing for nikon to offer but one difference to Canon's Cashback which is done via Bacs to your bank via credit to your Card or cheque you get a pre-paid card to value of cashback you use for future purchases in the future.

We all know its the price that people don't like. The cameras themselves are awesome. What happened when they dropped the V1 price, they were gobbled up
Same will happen with the V2,J3,S1.As far as a 1"sensor,i have yet to see any bad pictures so the winers about sensor size, get over it.If you need a large sensor to take a good pictures then you can't take a good picture period.

Promotion? Looks more like last-ditch effort.

To be fair, the 1 system has its uses: fast continuous AF, a non-DSLR option for catching fast moving object in bright sunlight. Otherwise, the price-point is just too high. That's why the retailers are giving discount for the system even before this cash-back.

Why is there so much HATE from consumers? Nikonians and others, alike?

The Nikon Marketing Department should also LEARN AND UNDERSTAND that the "1" Label isn't just flaunted and pasted on a mediocre hurriedly tossed salad of a camera.

The number "1" label deserves the number "1" badge it wears.

This camera doesn't deserve the "1" badge by a million miles...

To try to be that, but fizzle and fail short of smart consumer expectations, (and consumers are now intelligent, at least those who bag this gadget)... then Nikon will keep on LOOSING RESPECT.

Get that "1" label off the camera and start afresh.

People hate pretenders.

I always thought the 1 stood for the 1-inch sensor.

I think Nikon's mirrorless efforts are good. Biggest annoyance is the accessory port (can't use normal flashguns) and focusing with poor light is worse than their DSLRs and the usual not-quite-as-good-at-night electronic viewfinders.

This Nikon 1 is similar misunderstanding as Canon M. These juggernauts in their self-satisfaction do not listen to photographers. That is a chance for smaller braver pikes in the pond.

Hey, Digital PRima donnas here. really? you are so worried about what your camera looks like? You don't have to buy a v1, so you are actually worried about how somebody else's camera looks. You know what it looks like to me? A camera. If you are any kind of photographer you can make some great photos with this camera, the image quality is way beyond the needs of how most people view images/video on the internet, even retina screens. You should be lucky to have this camera for many instances, even if you wouldn't strut down the runway with it.

If it's the smaller sensor that bothers you, then it's clearly not the product for you.

But I think Nikon's offerings add richness to the mirrorless stable with some unique features and of course unique lenses, not to mention the ability to stick some Nikon lenses on it with (the overpriced) FT1 adapter.

I think it's not for everyone and still too expensive (especially if you already bought the first generation models on a discount), but just about every camera is too expensive soon after release.

I agree. Fast focus, fast frame rate, also let's not forget great video. People post negative comments about a camera that they have never even used or would buy (because it's a Nikon and they prefer other brands). Yes I own one! LOL!

I am aware of Olympus' claim of world's fastest AF. Every Olympus has been marketed with "world's fastest AF". In the real world Nikon 1 can be used in AF-C mode, can an E-M5 with acceptable result?

playForever8
By playForever8 (3 days ago)

As far as I know that E-M5 AF-C is not as good as Nikon 1 system.

Nkion 1 is has the fastest AF-C among mirrorless, and 2nd best video performance among all cameras(just right after GH3).

No not really true. I own a P7000 (and a few older Nikon DSLRS)... not great, but can take some nice photos. I recently got a V2. Takes great pics. Could not be any happier. Small and fast. You know sometimes it'a not the camera!

Foolishness. It's no replacement for a dslr if you need dlr features. But they are very quick, accurate cameras that are nothing like Nikon's slower small cameras. They also are much better video cameras than their little brothers. And, obviously they offer interchangeable lenses. Contrary to common belief, there is a decent lens lineup and most are of very high quality. Nikon has a coherent lens strategy for Nikon 1 (unlike some competitor formats) and has been introducing new lenses regularly.

Which Pentax are you comparing it to?
Pentax Q can't focus as well as this Nikon 1 series (first-hand experience). Pentax Q also came out with firmware that wasn't (and isn't) that stable; it requires battery pulls sometimes (to get the unit to turn on again).

Pentax K01, I'm told, is a bad focuser too. In my opinion, the design is one of the least-likeable in recent memory. As for Pentax DSLRs, I'm told their focus is not great either, though they are doing far better designs there.

Or at least understand some of the benefits of the 1 Series more, and welcome it as another unique choice in the mirrorless market.

What's the difference between "cash back" and "price cut." The only distinctions I can imagine is that a lower price would also mean lower tax, and would benefit any buyer. The "cash back," on the other hand, presumably does not affect the tax on the gross price, and would not benefit those who fail or forget to apply for the rebate, nor those who return the camera.

Odd that so few manufacturers offer 1" sensor cameras, other than the Nikon 1 or the Sony RX100.

For a compact point and shooter it makes a lot of sense, for a camera system, not so much sense.

I think we will see more people move up to 1inch sensors in the point and shoots. A lot of camera makes are loosing money by selling 1/2.3" sensored p&s.

agree. 1/2.3" doesn't offer enough quality over phone cameras. 1" is good for new PnS.

I think if you want to release news such as this, it would be much better to research open cashbacks and combine more in one article. Otherwise one can claim that you are clearly just helping sales of your favourite brands.

On this note, there has been a Pentax summer cashback for some time. Since DPR did not report it, here is a link:
