Is this the new Leica 'Mini M'?

Leica has announced that it has a 'new family member' coming on June 11th and, as the German manufacturer continues to tease the 'Mini M' on its website, a photo has emerged which may reveal more details about the forthcoming camera. According to mirrorlessrumors.com, a 'French iPad app' has published what seems to be an advertisement for the new Mini M and, if genuine, it reveals that the Mini will sport a 16MP APS-C sensor and an 28-70mm (equivalent) F3.5-6.4 zoom lens.

Other details from the supposed French advert include full HD video recording and aluminum body construction. Ironically (but not unexpectedly) the photograph indicates that the purported M Mini lacks an optical viewfinder. Why is that ironic? Well, because according to Leica lore, the 'M' in Leica M stands for 'Messsucher', which is German for 'rangefinder'. Of course there's every reason to expect that even if it doesn't offer a 'true' Leica M experience, like the X-2 and (M Typ 240) the new camera will support an optional electronic viewfinder of some description (we're holding out for a re-badged version of the very nice Olympus VF4).

Meanwhile, the mysterious black box on Leica's website has opened slightly...

According to mirrorlessrumors.com the new camera will cost 2450 Euros (~$3100). What do you make of this latest rumor? Let us know in the comments.

I asked this the first time they posted a rumor. As long as they do not have a NDA they can whisper all they want. Rumors are more fun than pixel peeping and official PR propaganda anyway so I'm cool with it.

Actually, I suspect that they post these rumours because they have an NDA. This is a way to get round it. I know I visit DPR much less these days, because there is more "news" on the rumour sites......that hits DPR in the pocket, as a division of Amazon.

If people are willing to buy, it is not overpriced. There is no demand that items should be sold at cost or at a loss.

Remember: Expensive is not overpriced. Overpriced is if the price is higher than the market wants to buy at.

If in fact....here we go again. They make what THEY like, instead of what we need and want. APS-C ? I'll stick with my micro 4/3 GX1, or my G1X if I want a slow lens when I zoom it out. If Panasoic can make a FZ200 with a 2.8 Leica Branded Lens which does not lose aperture as it zooms out. Leica is fooling everyone....again. VRR

Waiting to get my gx1 saw it for cheap on bhphoto (250$) without a lens, which is how many times cheaper than a leica? Wont bother calculating. But if i were filthy rich i would want to give the normal leica m a try, but im not rich so ill pass plus i doubt the difference in image quality is worth 12 gx1's in price.

I honestly would have preferred m4/3rds. Fewer edges to chop off the image, image quality just as good as APS provided the pixel density is similar, smaller form-factor, possibly smaller lenses if they decided to build dedicated ones. As odd as it sounds, APS is probably a cost-saver for Leica.

No built in EVF (probably) or an expensive add on EVF (possibly) and a lens which ends up at f6.4? For $3,000? No thank-you. I'll stick for the time being with my G1X as my second camera - great IQ and slightly faster zoom. My future Fuji XE1s or XE2 upgrade is looking very secure indeed. That's unless there's a good, small and reasonably affordable FF MILC released (the NEX9?). With built in EVF please. Let's face it - that's what everyone's waiting for......

Could be worse, it could be $3000 for the fixed-lens Sony which actually exists right now and you can't even change lenses.

At least the Sony, which is admittedly overpriced itself, has a full-frame sensor. The cost of making a full-frame sensor is significant in the selling price. I dare say Sony could make an RX-1 with a Zeiss zoom for the same price, and with a much faster aperture. I wonder how the Leica lens performs "wide open" at f/6.4 at 70mm?

By Rod McD (1 week ago)

So did the MFT cameras, the GXR, the RX1 and the Coolpix A, with varying levels of expense ranging from modest to outrageous (Nikon). Add on EVFs are a woeful idea from the outset. They make the camera taller than one with built in EVF, add significantly to the expense, get lost, forgotten, knocked off, etc, and block the flash shoe in use. Egregiously bad idea. Just give us a complete camera in the first place.

My favorite camera for thirty years was the Leica CL, which was the smallest body to take m-series lenses. This could be the new CL...if it only had a full frame sensor. Has Leica never heard of a NEX7? It sports a fantastic 24 meg sensor for a third the cost. And its even been around for a few years!

Leica lenses are undeniable special, for construction alone. But optically many of the Zeiss lenses on Sony products are every bit as good, for a fraction of the money. Sadly, Leica is becoming a jewelry brand for big shots.

Now who would buy this, he asked? It's an APS-C sensor at the price of a FF sensor. The lens has max f/6.4 aperture at 70mm. It just seems that Leica wants to take their "M" dna and go laughing all the way to the bank. I'd buy the Fuji over this thing without a moment's pause. Does Leica, like Hasselblad, think that every outsourced camera they create that bears their marque is instantly an art treasure? At least the Luna/Sony accepts your choice of lenses, including M mount lenses.

If you look at the Leica product line, they make several (from a Leica M view) uninteresting cameras, that most are rebadged with slightly modified shells.

So, if this camera turns out to be "uninteresting" also would not be a surprise.

I assume though that those overpriced uninteresting, but designed by Leica shell, are selling quite well.

Leica Mini M : 18-46mm f3.5-6.4
Canon G1X : 15-60mm f2.8-5.8. MUCH smaller lens.
Fuji X : 18-55mm f2.8-4. About the same size, excellent IQ.

Enough said.

An interchangeable f/3.5-6.4 lens doesn't make any sense, either. Not with Sony and Fuji (also Samsung and Canon) selling APS-C mirrorless cameras with lenses that are faster at the long end. For a premium lens maker to sell a lens with such pathetic specs is bizarre, fixed or not. The X2 has sold slowly. This they'll have to give away.

Got to get up to speed dpreview. There is nothing ironic about the Mini M name because that isn't the name. In the teaser all of them are called M, going from M Nano, to M Micro, to M mini, finally up to the inspiration of them all, the M. Well, not the digilux, that wasn't inspired by anything but Panasonic. Anyhow, that's that then. Only one real M, and it will stay that way.

- Letters on front of lens don't follow Leica lettering layout
- Front of lens says 18-48, barrel up to 70
- Video record button doesn't look round
- Lens is too slow
- Doesn't look like it would fit in the box from teaser image

I wouldn't mind a m4/3 with a new set of leica lenses and an included M lens adaptor.

Leica has lost its mind. The X2 isn't selling worth squat at US$2,000 so they decide to make a zoom variant with an exceedingly slow lens for over US$3,000?? I can tell you right now, this thing won't sell hardly at all. If this was built like the old mini cm zoom (35-70, f/3.5-6.5) with a 35mm sensor and a partially collapsing lens, then yeah, it might have a chance at that price. But this thing is enormous and uses an aps-c sensor. If this is it and the lens is permanently fixed, then its a still-born baby.

I hope, for Leica's sake, this is a new SYSTEM camera. Still, that is one gawdawful slow lens even for a kit lens.

The surprise for me is the lens choice. A 24mm to 80mm would have been a much more interesting choice and still manageable in size. And 3.5 to 6.4 is not bright enough for most users. Since it is likely to use that 16mp sony sensor , it means that the new 2.34 million EVF. Will be the sole advantage over a Ricoh GXR with the A16 module. Pretty lame even for Leica
