Canon has posted a firmware update for its EOS-1D Mark IV and EOS-1Ds Mark III full-frame DSLRs to allow them to work correctly with the new EF 200-400mm F4 L IS 1.4x lens. Firmware versions 1.1.3 (1D Mark IV) and 1.2.2 (1Ds Mark III) allow the cameras' central AF points to achieve focus with the lens when it is used with an extender, where the combined aperture is F8. Both updates are available for immediate download.

Firmware version 1.1.3 for Canon EOS-1D Mark IV

Firmware Version 1.1.3 for the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV camera incorporates the following functional improvements and fix:

  • Enables the center AF point to autofocus when the camera is used with the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x lens and an Extender, whose combined maximum aperture is f/8.
  • Fixes a phenomenon in which abnormal images may result when continuous shooting mode is enabled and the image size is set to "RAW" or "RAW+JPEG".

Firmware version 1.2.2 for Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III

Firmware Version 1.2.2 for the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III camera incorporates the following functional improvement:

  • Enables the center AF point to autofocus when the camera is used with the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4X lens and an Extender, whose combined maximum aperture is f/8.
  • Firmware Version 1.2.2 is for cameras with firmware version 1.2.0 or earlier. If your camera’s firmware is already Version 1.2.2, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

I am not a TROLL . But I am not a loyal canon user any more . I have had Horrible service from canon's service center.. To - tell the truth- it really was beyond HORRIBLE ! canon has been DISHONEST , to me and a lot of my friends. Two of my friends have switched, this year.. They did not want to ,, They were forced too. From bad focusing errors to bad exposures to poor repair, AND LOW RES !!! So this firmware is just a band aid over a wound . Both cameras this firmware is for, are extinct cameras. That is good. They should be . I am saving my money now to switch. I just hope a new buyers reads the blogs and sees the real feed back from real users. canon how dare you be so poor in customer service repair and design. But when you dare , we as customers switch. We as customers have two GREAT systems out there to go to ,, Nikon and Now Sony. As I see it Sony is going to rock the boat in 2014,, my money is waiting to see who is going to be My new Camera company to purchase from.

"tell the truth", maybe you should provide some links to the blogs and real feedback you wish the readers to see - if they do a Bing search for "customer service nikon vs canon" these are the kind of links they will find:

http://www.customerservicescoreboard.com/versus/Canon~Nikon
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3294539

These links are "obviously" manipulated to give Nikon a bad reputation in terms of customer service - so it would be great if you provided links that tell the truth

hjaeger; again you attack the messenger. Do you work for canon? I tell you of my personal problems with canon, a company that CANNOT keep a customer. There service center in Irvine is COMPLETELY DISHONEST ! Let me give you an example. 7d hot shoe was made incorrectly. A shutter count was requested. Techy said can not do . He said there was to much corrosion on hot shoe, so he knows his counter will not slide in. THERE WAS ZERO CORROSION on hot shoe. I checked to see if a strobe would slide in , NOPE . He knew it was made wrong . NO IT WAS NOT HIT with a sledge hammer ! , A sledge hammer would not bend that hot shoe in with out smashing the whole camera! That camera was NEW. It also had the red eye double flash going on. Menu changes did not change that. Sorry sir we will not repair that under warranty , is was what they said. So , do you want to hear more hjaeger?? I have A LOT more wasted time stories about CaNnOt . So just be glad YOU were not at the lack of service center.

"tell the truth", I am actually not attacking the messenger, I was merely trying to help you build a convincing case. Searching the internet seems to give a different view for yours, so I thought it would be good if you were more open to sharing the blogs and links with real feedback from real people (quote from you original post) that you were referring to

With regards to working for Canon, no I don't - however, I do work for a company affiliated with Microsoft, if you want to have a stab at that

I order to not let you down with regards to personal attacks, I do have one question: If the 7D was new, why would you need to request a shutter count?

hajaeger: Because the Double flashing from the built in strobe was going on ,, and the lack of sERVICE center did not want to repair the camera. I wanted the lack of service techy guy to see how many shots had NOT been taken with the camera. The camera was used very little . Still no help from cANnOt service , he knew the camera was made wrong , day one.. But a better story is from my friend Steve. His camera was in for a sensor cleaning. The sensor was scratched by the service center, and Canon admitted it !! But caNNots answer was have Steve PAY FOR THE a NEW SENSOR !!!!! THAT DAY Steve SWITCHED to NIKON D800 !! That NIKON really is a F A B CAMERA ! 36 Mega pix is so much better in capture performance , You wont want to shoot with a LESSER sensor . And Yes I am saving my money to get the Best capture at a LESS PRICE . Yes the new 200 400 may be a good lens? But why stick it on a LOW RES camera?? The Panasonic FZ200 would be a better way to go with huge savings.

why not give a general support for AF at F8 in center point as the previous 1D line cameras?

The 1Ds MkIII does have general f8 at center point already so there must be something strange about the way this lens reports to the camera if it needs a firmware mod.

"the new EF 200-400mm F4 L IS 1.4x lens ... when it is used with an extender ... the combined aperture is F8"

Shouldn't f/4 with a 1.4x extender give a combined aperture of f/5.6?

I think thats f4 plus in-built extender taking it to f5.6 plus external 1.4x taking it to f8.

it is a 200 - 400 f4 as is. And when you use it with the internal extender the aperture becomes f.5.6 and if you use an external extender it becomes f.8 max aperture.

My Mark 4 is a GREAT DOOR STOP. All the current canons are low res compared to the Nikon 800 series Cameras. I just hope canon gets caught up to Nikon. My buddy's D 800 images are FAR FAR better than my canon's. It is sad canon is so far behind. I am hoping ..

If your buddy's images are "far far better" than yours, I can only assume that he is a "far better" photographer?

hjaeger---Why try to get personal. When I say my buddy's images are better, I really mean when you crop or make a large print from my canon there is just not much in resolution. So his captures really are better when you have more to start with, like from the Nikon. Maybe I should really say , I have been let down by canon. canon seems to think they are just in an upper class by them selves. But every time I use my friends Nikon D800 I am excited and pleased about the results. The Nikon really is a BETTER camera by far. It also cost less. canon prices have just gone off the scale in the last year. You guys that call me a TROLL , I be work for canon. canon your products and your service centers have been a BEYOND BAD experience for me, and a lot of friends of mine too. During a sensor cleaning of a bros camera they scratched his sensor , admitted they did and said to my friend he can pay for its replacement . Just one of many ,, want to hear about more ? Or is that good service ?

"tell the truth", first of all, I would suggest reading through your own comment threads - it paints a pretty clear picture of why other people are calling you out as a "troll". You really do have a grudge against Canon and Adobe

Second of all, all I did was point out the obvious "between the lines" message in your post

However, my comment was based on the belief that great images were due to the photographer, not the camera alone. As I understand you, I would be taking much better images with a Nikon camera. This is great news, and a big boost to my confidence, as I am currently producing images that is on par with my Nikon shooting friends - that must mean that I am actually the superior photographer, only held back by my inferior Canon camera. Thanks, I will start saving up for a D800 right away!

:)

hjaeger:Yes I do have a PROBLEM with adoPe ,, and cAnNOT . Both companies are RIPPING US OFF. ALL of us,, YOU included. But my guess is YOU work for cANnOt. Did you really read the adope blogs, on this Great DP Review web page? If you did , you will see to that 90 plus percent of the readers feel that adoPe is WRONG way WRONG . cAnNot too , is WRONG way WRONG over pricing almost all there equipment.. And Yes Nikon Resolution makes caNNot, a second class camera. Check out the 36 Mega Pixel files that you can down load.. AND say to your self you prefer less, at a HIGHER COST !!! A great photograph is BETTER when it has enough resolution , so you CAN print it BIGGER , With maximum Quality . Nikon gives you that , your camera CANNOT even though you PAID MORE FOR IT . !!!

For the MkIV file they're supporting 10.5 and higher, which isn't unexpected. The files seem to be the same thing from 10.5 to 10.8, makes me wonder why they don't just list them together etc but that's how their site is.

Anybody tried this out yet?
