Fujifilm updates X-Pro1 and X-E1 to improve AF with 55-200mm lens

Are you saying that Fuji did NOT anticipate creating any new lenses? Or didn't consider what their firmware might need to be able to use them?

A 55-200mm lens is hardly an innovative breakthrough that could not possibly have been foreseen.

My point was that if Fuji (and indeed Microsoft) had done a better job at the onset, they wouldn't need so many fixes later.

Marty, maybe the testing process for the new lens af algorithms was not complete at the release of the camera. Everything has to be tested and re tested and tested again. They could have not released this(like most companies) and no one would have complained. The could have made this a "new feature" on an upcoming camera(like oly and panny do). But they decided to improve the current cameras out instead of releasing new cameras every year.

FW updates are good. No matter how small. Lets everyone know that the camera is still getting some love.

Right, and then you'd complain their products are taking too long to release.

It's impossible to write perfect software for the present--now you want it for the future, too?

Nikon also upgrades the firmware for their cameras when they release new lenses - and I'm sure other camera companies do as well.

Marty, the consequent new firmwares add automatic correction and the proper handling for the new lenses.
It couldn't be done a year ago because XF55-200 exsisted only on the paper.

This is also the very same thing that Nikon did a few days ago for D300, D300s, D700.

I am really sorry but I find this ridiculous. Maybe the very first release but the next ones are about improvements more than anything. Updating a firmware as a new lens comes out is hardly a surprise.

I actually applaud fuji here. What's the option? Keep stuck with a bug or have to buy a new camera for a slight improvement (Olymous I am looking a little at you).

I Don't understand whats so Wong about this. My x-e1 works fine. Cree gastar AF? Why should that Brother me? I mean wth?

Oh And Marty- To say Fuji anticipated the lens is a bit engineering naive. Yes, fuji most likely did not anticipate the *exact specifications* of the new lens. From the time the xpro1 and this lens came out there are marketing decisions, engineering investigations, material avail abilities to name a few variables that need to be locked in place before they can make it to the firmware

Look at the telephoto prime- it was specified as f1.4 and now will be f1.2.

make it, launch it, fix it this is a basic fact of life in high tech. as much as we'd like cameras to ship as perfect little appliances, the fact remains that cameras like X-E1 are essentially mini super computers with millions of lines of software, and due to the massive level of bring-up required in the past half decade probably to make the x-pro line, you cannot ship a perfect product on time without sacrificing all your profits.

if you're just joking around, you got me. otherwise you can't say anything without considering how much software development resources have been invested to reach v1.05

anyhow, why can't fujifilm do it when others like canon and nikon can? well, fujifilm is a far last contender in terms of size and resources. i know it's sad i'm defending their slow development process but the fact that they innovate and surpass others in terms of image quality cost/performance in a field dominated by canon and nikon, just puts a big grin on my ugly face
