Book Review: Shooting in Sh*tty Light

Lindsay Adler and Erik Valind, both working professionals and educators, have written a beginner’s guide to photographic lighting with an unusual conceit at its core. By structuring a book around a list of common challenges - what they call the 'top ten worst situations' - they've created a digestible, useful 'lighting 101' guide. In this short review, Adam Koplan takes a look at their book 'Shooting in Sh*tty Light: The Top Ten Worst Photography Lighting Situations and How to Conquer Them'.

Countless books about photography so it makes you wonder why DPreview decided to make a news about this one in particular...
Are the authors superstars of photography? or they paid for the "free" promotion? or the title was the reason it caught up? or... fill in you speculation here

...hopefully for money or would you like them to work for free? Or would you like to pay them instead:D? or, as usual, someone thought it would be fun as a news.. oooooor something like this might be useful to the majority of beginners in photography.. There are other choices to fill in if you add a grain of sugar:D:D

Continuing the grand tradition of judging the book by its cover... it's not the censored `shitty' that puts me off, it's the composition with that block of white stuck out of her head in the top-left corner.

Idiotic title that gives the impression that the book has been written by one of those pathetic kiddies who thinks it's 'cool' to swear. Might be a great book but I won't be buying it.

My sentiments exactly. I don't get how two adult professionals could be so proud to announce to the world that this is the most compelling title they could dream up for their books.

Disgusting title. I would never buy this book. A terrible example to young photographers on expressing themselves.

Would it it be better if they used the word Cr*ppy?

Cuz the two words are the exact same thing only some doofus thought one is worse than the other, and in America one is on a censored list and the other is not. Pretty stupid if you ask me.

Sh*t is one of the funniest words in the English language in its actual slang use. Ex: Ah sh*t! (admittance of wrongdoing or a mistake, or something gone wrong)- usually funny or at least revealing.

And its hypocrytical to use the word then be offended when it's on a title, I think. It's just that all your life someone told you it's a bad word so ... you think it's bad. But whats bad about it?

Oh that camera is cr*ppy- (same thing as sh*tty). Perfectly acceptable by most people, and yet? What's the difference?

I think the word pathetic is a sh*tty word, especially in its use here. :)

there is no such thing as sh*tty light - only enough or not enough at good or bad angles ;)

Doesn't "not enough and at the wrong angles" pretty much describe "shitty light"?

Sounds like a pertinent topic. Although I prefer the challenge of shooting without all that paraphenalia, although I do more nature and street shooting, not so much portraiture.

This is just our share in the flood of books coming out now with Sh**tty in the title. Just like a few years ago we had a flood of titles in the pattern of Secrets of the Horse Whisper (dogs, baby, pets, numbers, turkey, kids, etc) It seemed like there were quite a few old projects gathering dust on a shelf somewhere that the companies decided might sell if they did a slight rewrite and stuck on a formulaic title.

@OpticsEngineer,

Say what you will but Secrets of the Turkey Whisperer was a fantastic and inspiring read and it might do you some service to read it yourself.

The answer is that this is for beginners. I don't see why a PRO will not use a flash as it was stated in above reply. I wish luck with the sales to the authors.... I don't mind the title :)))
