Sony RX1 wins Camera Grand Prix 2013, Sigma 35mm F1.4 lens of the year

Sony's RX1 fixed 35mm full frame compact has received the prestigious Camera Grand Prix 2013 title, while Sigma's 35mm F1.4 DG HSM was named lens of the year. The awards, organized by the Japanese Camera Journal Press Club have a history of recognizing what prove to be historically significant cameras. Meanwhile, the Editors Awards were given to the Canon EOS 6D and Sigma's DP Merrill series of compacts.

We felt similarly positive about the Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 and the 35mm F1.4 DG HSM and awarded both our Gold Award when we reviewed them.

The main awards, established in 1984, are selected by a 57-member panel made up from the Camera Journal Press Club (CJPS), along with a selection of editors and experts from around the world. The Editors Awards, meanwhile, are decided between the council members of the CJPS. The Editors Awards also have a tradition of identifying significant products, including Adobe's Lightroom and the Panasonic DMC-G1 (the first mirrorless interchangeable lens camera), rather than just high-end heavyweight cameras.

It's Camera GP "Japan" done by Japanese Camera Journal Press Club. I heard that all compact cameras (include camera equipped smart phones) sold in Japan are regulated have audible shutter sound otherwise illegal to sell, RX1 is one of the few exception and this is reason why it's selling relatively well in Japan despite steep price point, and thus the award is given.

I haven't seen anywhere where this is "required" by compact cameras, only on camera phones. Most compact cameras have an electronic shutter or shutter so small it makes almost no noise, making it hard to hear by most that a picture took. South Korea has a law requiring this. Japan, I am not sure if it is a law or more a "Gentleman's agreement". It has to do with privacy and the growing concern of pervs taking pictures of others unnoticed.

The RX-1 uses a leaf shutter, which is different than most other cameras. It is usually quieter than the curtain shutter you might be used to, also making a different type of sound. But I don't think the RX1 was excluded from making a noise by skirting around laws since the laws are more for camera phones.

It is more than likely the RX1 caters to a group of users that don't want a fake shutter sound. As small as the RX1 is, I have a hard time seeing how someone can take an up-skirt shot of some passerby with it and go completely unnoticed.

Well deserved. All things considered, the RX1 is the best camera I ever owned or used.

Though as with all version 1 implementations there are a few bugs; most especially the panorama sweep is awful and unusable (surprising since the NEX panorama is nearly flawless).

Most of the derisive comments in this forum are incorrect or poorly thought out. Complaints that there is no built in EVF fail to consider exactly where it could be located without bulking up the body or shrinking the display screen. The howling over the reasonable price is empty noise; try to assemble a Nikon/Canon DSLR of equivalent quality (lens and sensor) without exceeding that price, then measure and weigh that alternative.

The Sigma has bokeh issues. For a 50mm (equiv) lens, that's simply inexcusable. And the Dpreview article has, as usual, inadequate bokeh testing and sample pics.

For some kinds of photography, bokeh is a deal-breaker. Come on Dpreview, wake up and get some advice from someone who understands this issue.

I does not have any bokeh issues. Bokeh has become some kind of photophile catchword because it can not be measured or quantified. So photophiles have something to talk and argue about when real performance can be exactly measured.

And yes, I have one. An amazingly sharp and faultless lens, only equalled by Fujinon XF 35mm f/1.4 (for APS-C sensors, givin "normal" angle).

Bokeh can certainly be measured and quantified. Look up circles of confusion +bokeh if you are unsure on this point.

The dpreview review mentions that it has bokeh issues.

You are evidently living in a 35mm bubble. Outside of it you will find that most DSLR owners are APS-C and this lens is for them a normal lens.

The test results on Imaging Resource for the Olympus 75mm 1.8
are extraordinary. No lens today can match it. In fact the 17mm 1.8
is equal or slightly better in all parameters to the Sigma 35mm 1.4.
The Sigma was probably chosen because it is the first decent full
frame lens for digital cameras. Test results for the Leica M9-P
and also for the Summilux 50mm 1.4 on Imaging resource are
an embarrassment. So much for the vaunted Leica myth of the
finest lenses and cameras in the world. At this point in time,
Olympus leads all in lens development followed closely by Fuji
and Nikon for the Nikon 1 system.

I can't really understand why the RX1 would win that prize. The whole idea, someone finally releases a FF mirrorless (no, not Leica) camera...and you can't change the lens. Why, why, WHY???! Sony blew a tremendous chance to get one up on Nikon and Canon and instead invented an expensive curiosity.

I will never buy an RX1 EVER. But I tried it out and was amazed at the sheer compactness of the darn FF camera. The IQ was superb and frankly I can see that it was an extraordinary feat for Sony to come up with such a small compact FF camera.

Sure I would have loved for it to be an ILC but I am sure Sony had some reason for not launching such a camera.

Many months of possible new cameras and lenses coming out or being made they dont even know about yet until a company reveals it, apparently this prize is just like the nobel peace prize, you can buy it for the right amount. Obama proved that with the nobel peace prize and sony proves it here as well. The year is not even half way through!

Well, one thing we do know, Canon will not be releasing any camera body worthy of any award in 2013.

Maybe for lenses, Canon can get the award for longest pre-pre-announcement for the 200-400 f/4 IS 1.4

it just refers to the time of the year it is given.
no matter what date you make it, some cameras will be cut off.
at least this way, people still have time to buy the award products before they are discontinued. I can see the logic behind it.

@rallyfan you have a point, from a Sigma fan here. As a non-Merrill owner, I couldn't believe the Merrill's have less battery life and camera/SPP performance compared to the previous generation.
Yes, it does have plenty of resolution but not many value it. I value image quality, but resolution is only 20% to 40% of image quality.

chap over at luminous landscape said the problem with the merril 3 was it was too sharp, he often de-sharpened the images!! Too sharp for most folks as well.

Quite simply the merills image quality is the best there is.

I thought about the RX1 for wide also and asked specifically a question about its focusing speed and focus tracking speed, but it seems it's not up to DSLR quality there. Many would say it's not right to expect it to be as fast as a DSLR, but on the other hand I simply don't care what many would say -- I'm willing to pay for that performance but the Sony isn't fit for my money (yet?). I've not given up, I think one day we will see cameras that focus as well as a DSLR provided others are also willing ot pay and also provided cameras are still being produced then.

Full Frame sensor in a compact body is cool and unique and have great low light but it is not a huge technical breakthrough.

There have been 35mm film compact cameras decades ago and those even have to have space for the film canister and rewind mechanism and AA batteries. Some of them even have zoom lenses. And most of them only a couple hundred dollars. The RX1 have a fixed lens..

It's not a bad thing it got camera of the year award. They won't sell that many of it because of the price and limitations. But it is not a big technical achievement putting a FF sensor inside a compact body.

While you shrug it off as not much of an achievement, I see it differently.

One of the smallest compact 35mm cameras with fixed lens in the world was the Minox 35, coming in at 100mm x 61mm x31mm (I believe with the lens cover closed, larger when lens cover is open). It's lens was a 35mm F/2.8, one stop slower than the RX1's 35mm F/2. It used a button cell battery and had no onboard flash.

The RX1 is 113mm x 65mm x 70mm, with most of that 70mm being just lens. So in inches, a difference of .5" x .15" x 1.5".

Now considering that the RX1 also has a larger sized battery, holds a memory card, has a 3" display on the back, buttons on the back along with dials on front and top, ports on the side, a built in flash, a one stop faster lens, etc. plus all the extra hardware inside that is needed to process the images you begin to realize it is quite a technological marvel.

If Sony decided to settle for an F/2.8 lens, I'd imagine it would be even smaller in depth.

It is a technical breakthrough. There's a huge difference between digital sensors and film. Light can hit film at all kind of angles, but it has to hit digital sensors almost perpendicular. So combining a small flange distance and a big sensor is really difficult.

ironcam, microlens design for sensors for light to hit it at an angle has been going on for apsc MILCs, dslrs and even thin point and shoots for a long time.

The RX1 is not the first camera to implement microlens design that takes angle of light into consideration.

The RX1 won the award more for the courage (and available funds) to build a camera that is not going to be a huge seller. I never said it didn't deserve the award.

It is the world's first compact full frame sensored camera, I think. And Sony of Japan did it Kudos to them.

But it is not a marvel in miniaturization. Back in early 1996 I bought a $4k Sony dcr-pc7 and that was Sony's first pocket dv cam and people were amazed a video camera can be so small. I also had the $2k JVC grhd1 released before the Sony that that was even smaller. Both were very good.

FF in "Digital" sensor buddy not film. So who has done FF digital sensor in a compact lately? Leica? yes kind of..Which brings me to the point. It won b/c it is FF digital compact at $3k 1/3 of m9. When you say "not a big technical achievement" I know you base that on ridiculous guess work but at least factor in the price. Making the same thing at 1/3 a price is always a big achievement. Here is what you said. $45k Ferrari...meh ferrari already made those it has been done before no big deal.

That is a very good point!
The limiting factor is usually optics: difficulty in getting sharpness across the entire frame as distances get closer. We have just become used to dimensions in FF digital, and have forgotten what distances are possible with good results.

Anecdotally, I remember an Agfa film camera I once had, with a 35mm f1.8 lens, that took stunning pictures. And it was simple, cheap. It had one of those toggle switches on the side of the lens with an icon of a person and one of 3 trees. LOL But the pictures looked stunning every time.

For example, Leica isn't a leader in sales, but they sure make good cameras.
Just because it sells well, doesn't make it the best.
A product for the masses isn't a product for connaisseurs!

The Sigma DP "M" series offers excellent solutions to questions very few are asking and for which even fewer are willing to pay; a very impressive evolutionary dead end that sold slowly and performs even slower. Dreary cameras lacking what Ignatius J. Reilly would call the proper geometry and theology, taste and decency.

The rest are good choices.

The Merrill is like when someone doing 35mm sees what their first 120 or 4x5 film neg can produce in terms of details and tonality. It's another dimension of reality.

Yes, you did give the RX-1 and the Sigma 35 f1.4 a gold award. But you gave the 6D a silver award in a rather weak box-ticking review. BTW, I am not a Canon fanboy.

I don't think DPR has ever reviewed any medium format camera. They didn't review the Pentax 645D or the Leica S2, so I wouldn't count on a review of the new Leica S.
