Just posted: Hands-on preview of the Canon EOS 700D / Rebel T5i

I bought a 650D within 30 mins it froze with liveview, replacement body did the same Canon said they had no knowledge of a problem. Maybe they have fixed the freeze fault on the 700D or maybe it was the STM 18-135 that had the problem. Canon just said get a refund. I am not sure if it would be wise to get a 700D just yet. As regards video its the large sensor that gives that film look which you cant get with a semi-pro camcorder you would have to go for C300, and some very expensive glass.

Canon seems to have a better marketing department than other manufacturers. I can name eight people that I know who have a Canon. Both of my brothers, two of my friends, three of my wife's cousins and my neighbor. I can also say with great confidence that they do not consider photography their hobby. Canon runs more ads, more people buy Canon. It's not a reflection of their lack of quality, they're great products, but they take aim at everyone.

I'm happy - because my 550D/T2i is still more or less current ....

Can't wait for the 800D Mark IV this Christmas! (and 900D next Easter 2014!)

The T5i is just the routine annual freshening up of the Rebel line with a few tweaks to keep it current and at or near the head of its class, just like the T4i was to the T3i. No surprises here since the Rebel line still outsells its competition by a huge margin, and routinely doesn't get a major redo until after 3 or more product cycles. The new Rebel SL1 is the real news from Canon and is destined to make the Rebel line even more dominate than it already is.

This is the most ridiculous camera anouncement in history....What were they thinkin.....??? Take 650d change the name to 700d...Well I think we can all predict what features 750d will have.. 18mp...9 point af...

I think that canon is running issues with the sleepy top management that they cannot have new innovation . Use sony sensors as nikon and step up from your old sensor 18 mp

What is the difference between 650 and 700?

700D, 70D, 7D2

750d will come out early next year to replace 700d, in marketing prespective canon just wanna have a new camera (model number game) in reality its just a copy of 650d.
No fools will buy 700d (unless they dont have 550d/600d/650d).
People will just take Nikon d5200 for an upgrade in same class! (very bad move by Canon).
Canon should Watch out for Pentax, K-5 is a quality camera, even better than Canon 7d (check snapsort.com) and K-5 cheaper by 30%!

I am fairly new to Canon about 1.5 years now. How do they stay on top with this kind of offering?

I can't wait for the 70D or 7DMKII. Or atleast that is what I keep telling myself every time Canon releases the same rebel camera with a different name.

Going from a T4i to a T5i is not an upgrade. Nor is it an upgrade going from the T3i...or maybe even the T2i!. The touch screen, flip-out screen, wifi this,wiifi that, GPS, scene modes is all fluff, at least to me. Nikon does the same thing with it's D3200/D5200 minus the touch screen but with the addiion of the 24 mp sensor which will draw in crowds that don't know anything about DSLR cameras beyond megapixels. The Rebel line is a great line of starter cameras, but I seriously question why anyone would upgrade to the T5i from a previous Rebel model when you can get yourself into a slightly older but more of a photographer's camera like the 60D.

After some thought I think I know why Canon released a 650d at a new price. Because of inflation! Grow up, the dollar is becoming more and more a low quality toilet paper.

Same MP, same focus points, same screen resolution, almost same viewfinder, last 3 models have articulated lcd, stereo sound (600d have only mono), the same battery ...
And still, every time the price is higher.
It will not be for research that is behind, right?

Over 10k of Canon glass in my kit and this is what they offer up as 'exciting & new' to attach it to.YAWN.The competition is offering more, more, more and we are supposed to be happy about less, less, less.

Very Frustrating and Disappointing day....
i was waiting for the arrival of CANON's challenge to Nikon d5200 & d7100..
only to see a new model 700d with minimal improvement and didn't see 70d.
Perhaps, Canon knows that the NEW 70d is NO MATCH to Nikon d7100, that's why they did not release 70d today, prevented humiliation by photography enthusiast.
Now they must be back to the drawing board and figure an upgrade to the New 70d to match Nikons standard.
Without sensor upgrade etc, expect 700d and 70d to just sit on the shelves FOREVER, with webs & dust all over.

Is this prevew a copy-and-paste of your T4i preview, with only minor changes too? ;)

See, this approach benefits the whole industry. If canon can badge-engineer their cameras, DPR can badge-engineer their reviews. :)

Compare this with the GH3.
Panasonic listened carefully to the GH2 users, and then produced a revolutionary camera that is kicking ass as a video camera. The GJ3 easily is in the same league as the 5DMIII but costs only half as much.

As for the 700D, there is absolutely nothing in the image quality department that would even make me consider replacing my now rusty 550D.

Of course, you get a lot of camera for its money, but the 650D or the 600D is a wiser option.

It is like Canon is still gloating in the fact that the 5D MKII was such a huge success. They have decided that they will never make another camera that improves on the 5DMKII.

A Poker Analogy:

Canon just gave up and Folded their cards even after they had already gone "All in". They bluffed when everyone else was holding Straight Flushes.

The other companies are not going to just stop because Canon says that they are holding the best hand ever.

The number one rule in Poker is that you should always know what cards the other people are holding. Canon seems oblivious to what other options are out there. They bet only based on what cards they are holding in their hands.

I don't even think they look at what cards are on the board much less try to figure out what cards other people are holding.

You can buy a 60D these days for less than what you would pay for this. Much more camera for the money!

Canon is embarrassing themselves. Its entirely pathetic how long canon is taking in putting out new features/updated components in their product...they are showing that they only care about high end models that come pout the gate severely overpriced. And how is that there is no camera yet that has the built in radio commander for their radio flash that came out a long while ago. If it wasn't for their beaut lenses, and the customer service *(those are critically important, obviously) i would just walk away from those lazy bums.

i actually would get a t4i- its a pretty nice camera- but that grip is WAY small, and if the buttons on the back are so flush it will make it a bit harder to use.

but actually, ill catch one on a fire sale and toss a meike grip on it.

Unless the 700D has a significantly improved sensor and/or delivers on phase-detection AF in Live-View, it's a really poor upgrade over the 650D.

Honestly, I knew it was going to be a let down, but not by this much. Waiting on the 70D before I jump ship for Nikon.

Really disappointed that Canon did not put the Wi-fi feature in the T5i. This technology has been in existence for many years and should have been standard across most Canon models by now! I had a chance to play around with the JVC GZ-EX250 camcorder which has in-built wi-fi. I was able to mount the camcorder at hard to reach angles or on a tripod and capture video using simply using my iphone as a remote monitor/controller. Once you use a camera with inbuilt wi-fi that can be paired to a smartphone, then there's no going back to regular models. Besides, you eliminate all the distortions due to the finger touching the trigger. It may be too late for Canon to wait till the next upgrade cycle to introduce this feature because by then upstarts like Samsung, Panasonic, etc. (who already offer this feature) would have caught up to Canon in camera sensor technologies. Such ask Apple what happens to your market-share/stock price when you keep dishing out phones that have incremental upgrades!

Did canon just buy way too many of these sensors and they are going to keep using them until they are gone?
