Tokina to ship AT-X 12-28 F4 PRO DX lens for Nikon from April 2013

Tokina has announced it will be shipping the AT-X 12-28 F4 PRO DX lens from April 2013 in Nikon mount, and June 2013 for the Canon version. Announced at the CP+ 2013 tradeshow, the lens is a replacement for the company's existing 12-24mm F4 wideangle zoom for APS-C cameras. But rather than making the lens wider to match its competitors, Tokina has chosen to extend it further into the 'normal' range, to give an 18-42mm equivalent zoom. The Japanese RRP of ¥90,000 is the same as that for the existing AT-X Pro DX 12-24mm F4 II lens. (via DCWatch)

This looks to be an awesome lens!!
Ill definitely be getting one!
The focal range is very usable and could easily be my walk around lens.
I just hope the image quality isn't sacrificed for the extra 4mmm

WA f/4 on APS-C does not sound all that exciting. And 42mm without IS/VR on Nikon/Canon... even 1/30s is out of the question already, and absolutely honestly, shooting handheld at even higher speeds would still degrade quality on those 18-24mpix sensors.
On Pentax and Sony (not NEX) it would be more useful.

i think tokina commited suicide creating a lens which is
- not wide enough
- not bright enough
- dx?
why choose this over the canon 10-22 or the nikon 10-24?

nahhh..

i'd accept though some lenses such as
- 10-20 f/4 dx
- or 24-24 f/4 fx even
or 12-24 DX like sigma created.

Sounds reasonable. By producing a wide angle lens that doesn't fit your needs, they have destroyed the entire company.

So you prefer a Sigma 12-24 DX over a Tokina 12-28 DX?

Anyway given their success with their past ultra-wides I don't think they have anything to worry about. People choose it over the Nikon cause it's sharper at half the price.

I loved my Toke 12-24 on Canon, but the non-bim model (mark I, if you will) so put me off to the Nikon mount that I ended up with a Siggy 10-20. Love that lens. I like the fact that Tokina has gone and added a motor and now a little more range, but that extra 4mm won't cause me to change. I'd rather have seen them go a bit wider, but I understand the constraints in that direction.

Not a big announcement IMHO.

I really like the Tokina 12-24 f4 II on my Nikon D7000; at half the price of the Nikon and with very good IQ, it's a great deal.

I'll be interested to read reviews of the new model, though I doubt I'd upgrade unless IQ was dramatically better, which doesn't seem likely.

I own the perfect sharp 11-16 2.8 and it is almost allways glued on 11 it would be on 9 if it could ! So I personally never missed my old 12-24 reach there are some dowsides on Tokina's if you (like me) frequently take pictures in direct sunlight the sunflare is realy bad sometimes ! But on the other hand the 18 pointed sunstars are owesome on all Tokina's with there 9 blade sharp diaphargm..... So for me a 9mm fixed lens at 2,8 with less sunflare would be preferable till then I keep my 11-16

Really hard ($$$) to get wider than ~12 mm at F4 or better. I have the Sigma 8-16 and love it but would not pay the attitional $1k for a DX F4 or better version.

Absolutely, I have been using excellent and ultra sharp 11-16 f/2.8 and very happy with this lens. It is as good as a prime lens with fast f/2.8.

The Tokina 12-24 is the first non-Nikkor lens I have owned in over 30 years of amateur/pro photography. In 5 years it has never let me down and it's the lens that lives on my camera. Normally I would have stuck with Nikon but its 12-24 zoom simply is not worth twice the cost of the Tokina.

I am looking forward to this lens... I little more reach on the tele end would be welcomed since I use it for street photography when I travel.

My experience with the Tokina has persuaded me to be more open-minded when it comes to considering lenses from companies other than Nikon.

This sounds great! Just awesome to have it that wide but also be able to use it as a normal lens. I'm surprised we've seen so few lenses like this for the Nikon DX format.

This one, the Sigma 30 f/1.4, and a decent tele zoom would be what I'd get if I was about to rebuild my lens setup today.

Canon 10-22 is a very good lens but usually people don't mount it on a camera and walk around. that's why 12-28 I think, beside any technical reasons.

Is it me or do I sense that the 3rd party guys are crashing the marquee brand's parties?
Sigma 30mm f1.4, 35mm f1.4 to name a couple.

Am still loyal to the marquees but more and more my heart drifts.

I think what io_bg is trying to say is that if they're coming out with new additions to existing lenses then the extra 1mm wider on the 11-16mm would be a welcome change just as the 4mm longer reach is a welcome addition to the 12-24mm which I own and love.

That would be awesome, but given they just upgraded the 11-16mm last year, I'd be surprised to see it replaced until late 2014 at the earliest.

It will fit fine on my D2Xs and on my D300 as well. Oh, and I do think there's something called a D7100 out there as well, although not as pro as the ones mentioned above. Now, we just need to wait for the D400 to make the selection complete. Yes, I'm a sports photographer and no, FX is not an option for me. I can't afford the longer lenses needed and I don't want to carry the extra weight.

This looks interesting, but pricey I'm sure.
Maybe they can finally get rid of that "Tokina Glow".
I had the 11-16mm f/2.8...lens for me was too big and I had problems, surprisingly with it's focus speed. Sold it.
I am currently thrilled with my Sigma 15mm f/2.8 on my D90...easy distortion correction when you want it and cool effects when you don't. Little teeny thing to.

@ ogl, I understand what you say but the topic here is more range for less wide angles and I know some people use wide angles for kids.

About time somebody went this way. Hope the quality is good and maybe more choices as well. I often use 12-24 as a walk around, I find 18-70 not wide enough for my taste.

Sony has done it. They have IBIS for their Alpha cameras and they have a 10-24mm OIS lens for NEX cameras. :)

I'm a big fan of the 11-16, but a longer range would always be appreciated. Still, I don't think the 12-24 was particularly good above 18mm. Hopefully they made this thing uniform across the full range - would make a good upgrade, then.

Would have liked 10mm on the wide end. But it should be another stellar, sharp, UWA from Tokina. Hopefully the flare isn't an issue.
