Sigma US to ship 19mm f/2.8, 30mm f/2.8 and 30mm f/1.4 this month

Sigma US has announced the price and availability for its three latest 'Art' series prime lenses - the 19mm f/2.8 DN and 30mm f/2.8 DN for mirrorless cameras, and the 30mm f/1.4 for APS-C DSLRs. The DN lenses will be available for street price of $199 and the redesigned 30mm f/1.4 will be available in Canon, Nikon and Sigma mounts for $499. All three will start shipping from the end of this month. No details were given about the 60mm f/2.8 lens also announced during the CP+ tradeshow.

New additions to Sigma’s ART lens category available in the US in late March

RONKONKOMA, N.Y., — March 8, 2013 — Sigma Corporation of America, a leading researcher, developer, manufacturer and service provider of some of the world’s most impressive lines of lenses, cameras and flashes, today announced the pricing and availability of three new lenses from its ART lens category, including two lenses for mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras and one lens for DSLR cameras with APS-C size sensors.

The updated 30mm F1.4 DC HSM lens will be available in late March for the street price of $499 in Sigma, Canon and Nikon mounts. The 30mm F2.8 DN and 19mm F2.8 DN lenses, which are available for both Micro Four Thirds and Sony E-Mount camera systems, will be also be available in late March for the street price of $199.

All three lenses are existing focal lengths that have been redesigned and quality-control tested with Sigma’s proprietary modulation transfer function (MTF) “A1” measuring system  as part of Sigma’s new Global Visioncategory restructuring.

The original 30mm F1.4 from Sigma helped the family-owned manufacturer pioneer the large-aperture, APS-C format, standard lens category in 2005. Now, it boasts new optical configurations and an optimized focusing system. Both DN lenses incorporate telecentric optical designs and a linear, auto focusing motor that ensures accurate and quiet focusing for video recording. They have metal exteriors and a simply shaped focus ring, with varying textures to distinguish each part of the lens. In addition, DN users can choose between a black or silver finish on these lenses.

Here are more details on these lenses from Sigma:

• Sigma 19mm F2.8 DN – This high-performance, wide-angle lens has an angle of view equivalent to 38mm on the Micro Four Thirds system and 28.5mm on the E-mount system (35mm equivalent focal length). As a wide-angle lens with excellent mobility, it is ideal for studio photography, architecture and starry skies. Its minimum focusing distance is 7.9 inches and its maximum magnification is 1:7.4.
• Sigma 30mm F2.8 DN – This high-performance, standard lens has an angle of view equivalent to 60mm on the Micro Four Thirds system and 45mm on the E-mount system (35mm equivalent focal length). This lens, which is perfect for casual and formal portraiture, documentary photography, travelogues and everyday shooting, includes a double-sided aspherical lens that enhances its optical performance. Its minimum focusing distance of 11.8 inches and its maximum magnification is 1:8.1.
• 30mm F1.4 DC HSM – With new optical configurations of eight elements in nine  groups, as well as rounded aperture blades, the updated 30mm F1.4 lens delivers pleasing sharpness and beautiful bokeh. Its angle of view is equivalent to 45mm on a 35mm camera (which is similar to that of human vision), its minimum focusing distance is 11.8 inches and its maximum magnification ratio is 1:6.8. The lens’ optimized power distribution helps to minimize field curvature, prevent a loss of image quality at the edges of photographs and produce outstanding image quality. Its double-aspheric lens minimizes spherical distortion, astigmatism and coma, and its rear-focus system prevents focus-dependent variation in aberration. Together, the new optimized auto focus (AF) algorithm and rear focusing system ensure smooth and accurate focusing. The new 30mm F1.4 is also compatible with Sigma’s new USB Dock, which will enable firmware updates and focusing adjustments, and is expected to be available in coming months.

The 1.4 looks interesting.

Sigma are odd. They are excellent at pricing lenses, yet when it comes to pricing cameras they can be off by half an order of magnitude, and somehow think adding "Merrill" to a name will make a body sell -- provided it is slow, expensive, and won't do high ISO.

A Sigma lens on a mainstream body can be a great value; a Sigma body though... Pitty...

Anyway, hoping the 1.4 is as great as it sounds.

What do people consider more important, the DOF from an f1.4 lens or the low light capacity of 1.4? Im sick of these damn conversions "Oh its only a f2.1 lens on crop sensors" - It isn't dimmer, just not as shallow DOF.

Or can focus AND aperture be controlled manually?

I ask because I'm thinking of Samsung and Pentax owners who have cameras that the f1.4 could be a nice fit for with a lens adapter.
Definitely a nice price point.

I can't wait to see reviews on that 30mm f/1.4. I really love using the Sigma 30mm f/2.8 on my NEX-7, it's always attached. I would gladly pay a bit extra for a faster version of it, provided it's as sharp when stopped down a bit.

Would love the 30mm 1.4 but I have mostly moved to Canon full format sensors. (Still have a 7D but not buying any more APS-C lenses). I think that quite a few people are doing the same. Kind of a shame Sigma is ignoring a growing market with their new lenses.

They may be ignoring full frame with this release but they have several full frame lenses already available (note the recently introduced 35/1.4 for instance). And APS-C still dominates the DSLR market. Ignoring that market would be incredibly foolish especially when Canon and Nikon have left such big gaps in their lens lineups.

Contact Sigma. I agree, the 30mm f/1.4 would be really nice for Pentax, definitely a nice alternative to the 31mm f/1.8 for a lot less money.

The MTF curves for the lens look like a huge improvement in the corners over the old version too. They look the same out 7.5mm from the center, but further than that the new one is dramatically better. That is wide open performance, I wonder how it does stopped down (great I imagine).

The market share is not that tiny in the far east, but that is by the by.
Sigma are legends to announce the initial mounts on a new lens. In view of Pentax stubborn dedication to APS-C at the moment, this lens WILL appear on the K-Mount soon. Why? well the mk1 was popular with Pentax users and the mk2 will be too. If it comes with the HSM, I will be another convert to Sigma Primes.

I would certainly buy one for my Pentax as would a high proportion of Pentax owners. What risk financially is there in a K mount for this lens? It is a small market relatively body wise , but a pretty decent lens market. For Sigma it is likely large enough for a quick ROI and they can create the K mount in their sleep. I saw an interview recently with a Sigma rep stating that it would be available in K mount following the initial Canon/Nikon release. We shall see.

Pentax has less market share but they do not have a competitor. The 31 f/1.8 is about $1000 while the Ca-Ni 28 f/1.8 is about $500-$600

Pentax used to have the fame to make lenses as good as Germans. but Sigma can do better. that explains why Germans are chased out of the market and the camera department of Pentax chased out of the company.

My guess is that they only have two manufacturing lines and in order to produce another mount they have to stop the EF or F lines temporarily. Given the massive market share's that Canon and Nikon have it's a gamble to produce lenses for other mounts.

Probably just me but I can't see the press release on the linked page in this news item. I'm very surprised the 30mm 1.4 is 499 USD - is that correct? The existing 30mm is listed as 690 USD. Or is the 690 a mistake on the Sigma site? Amazon states the existing 30mm has a 489 USD list price.

Sigma has correctly identified the lens market as a potential gold mine when served with their multi-format, multi-mount approach.

They also seem to have correctly perceived that "quality vs. performance. vs. price" is the holy-trinity key to access, explore and fully own the said mine.

To further strength this plan, they're being offered an unexpected helping hand under the guise of the insane jacking up of prices brands are making across the board, for their proprietary lenses offering.

If Sigma plays their hand nicely, they might have the market by the nuts in a few years.

Maybe they learned from the debacle which was the SD1 pricing strategy. Let's hope so. And I agree that the jacking up of proprietary lens prices has gone out of control even if body prices are competitive. Case in point D7100 and 80-400mm. Yowsers!
