Panasonic announces upcoming firmware update for GH3 camera and lenses

Panasonic has announced firmware updates for its Lumix DMC-GH3 high-end movie-focused mirrorless camera, the 14-42mm and 45-175mm power zooms and the 45-150mm. The GH3 update will allow users to connect to a computer via Wi-Fi by entering the computer name (NetBIOS names for Mac). It also adds an MP4 1080p60, 28Mbps mode to video recording. Meanwhile the lens updates promise improved autofocus performance in AF Continuous mode when mounted on the GH3. The updates will be available at the end of this month.

what about the OIS-problem with the pz14-42 and blurry images at 42mm that was even mentioned here at dpreview.

there was never any statement nor fix for this from panasonic. does anyone know more about it?

Maybe it's not possible to fully fix, to solve it the sensors need to be in the inner element and they are not.
The wobble of the inner element adds extra shakiness, the sensors are on a lensunit further back that doesn't have connection with the telescopic inner unit. The whole prolem lies in the lens' construction.
I think the same is true for the 1st iteration of Olympus' 14-42mm kit lens.

The 12-35 OIS problem still needs to be addressed. On a tripod mounted GH2, OIS turned off, there is still a subtle jittery effect. Annoying, since I bought this lens primarily for video use. Please fix!

Sorry to hear about that real nuisance, buda -- or are you now in Pest? With fully manual zooms without supercomputers and gyro-stablizers and little electric motors neatly tucked inside them, this can never be a problem issue, fortunately.

Not fixed. Turning it on or off, same problem. I also tested my 45-200, 20, 14-42 kit lens, and Oly 9-18. All rock steady. An expensive lens like the 12-35 should be too.

It is so exciting! I didn't use my GH3 yet and waiting my 12-35 to arrive to start. Should I do the firmware update immediately before usage?

I tend to not upgrade FW/SW on anything unless it addresses a specific issue I have. So if you have a mac, use time lapse or have any of the 3 lenses mentioned, it's no rush. Maybe the next update will address issues with features I use, but until then I'll follow the adage, if it's not broke, don't fix it.

Woinderful to read....

For DPReview, any chance on perhaps a samples gallery or hands on review of the GH3....the local area does not carry this camera. I do appreciate your reviews.

The hands on test is certainly the final determination, but the comparison tools on DPReview and list of changes/additions make deciding a bit easier...at the convenience of any internet point.

Best of luck with your GH3...please respond how the size of the body feels compared to your previous camera.

I suppose we all love to photograph, but seem a bit reoccupied with newer products.

Great news about having a firmware update for the Lumix DMC-GH3, people. Now, if only Panasonic would start making and shipping this promising camera to camera vendors, that would be perhaps an even better bit of news, eh?

Ever since I hqave been looking for the GH3 on the B&H web site -- they never had it listed "in-stock." For instance, as of 1:53PM EST on 7 March 2013, this is what B&H will tell you about the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH3's availability from them:

I got mine from Amazon. As of today, the status is 'in stock.'

Aside from some minor annoyances, I love this camera. It's fast and does not get in the way of shooting.

Got it, SD, here is what it shows on the evening of 7 March 2013:

2 new from $1,298.00
2 used from $1,295.00
1 refurbished from $1,444.44

Okay, so there is a total of FIVE Lumix DMC-GH3s now offered by Amazon, right? What I can't get past, the "refurbished" one costs exactly $146.44 MORE than the 2 brand new one copies are listed for. To me, that sounds like a raw deal.

Amazon's availability changes daily. I think the refurbished ones are just a bait that are there for one of those days that the new ones run out and someone just has to order one that day.

I wonder if this is related in any way to the newer lenses as well. I read somewhere that the inconsistency in the 12-35/f.2.8 lens is actually related to a problem in some GH3. Let's see what happens.

I'd love an alternative to the Lumix Link app. It's not very well designed and key camera controls should be available on the live view screen.

Hope Focus Peaking gets added soon. Pana's public statement about this last month kind of left the door open, maybe they'll find a way...
The sooner the better, as I think many potential customers in the US took that response re focus peaking to mean, "ForgetAboutIt", and may have been inspired to forget about the GH3, which would be unfortunate.
